Silver Airways to start Fort Lauderdale - Pensacola service

The small boutique Floridian carrier, Silver Airways has announced it will be starting a new daily service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Pensacola International Airport (PNS) to start on February 13th, 2019.

To complement the new service, Silver offers convenient connections beyond Fort Lauderdale to Key West and the Bahamas. In addition, connections are available to destinations throughout the Caribbean and Latin America through Silver’s interline ticketing partners, including JetBlue, United, Avianca and Azul Brazilian Airlines.

Copa Holdings reports a drop of nearly 39% in net income during the third quarter

Copa Holdings announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2018 which shows the company had a net income of US$57.7 million, from an operating income ofUS$74.3 million, representing a 38.4% decrease over operating income of US$120.7 million during the third-quarter of 2017.

The revenues were hit by increased fuel charges, the weakness of the Brazilian and Argentinian currencies as well as increased competition and lower fares.  Yield per passenger mile decreased 3.3% to 11.6 cents and RASM came in at 10.1 cents, or 4.2% below last years numbers.  Operating cost per available seat mile (CASM) increased 4.3% from 8.6 cents in the same period of 2017 to 9.0 cents in third-quarter, driven by a 31.6% increase in the effective price of jet fuel. CASM excluding fuel costs decreased 5.5% from 6.3 cents in last year to 6.0 cents in this period, mainly as a result of timing of expenses, fewer operational disruptions and cost reduction efforts.

Copa ended the quarter with a consolidated fleet of 102 aircraft – 1 Boeing 737 MAX9, 68 Boeing 737-800s, 14 Boeing 737-700s, and 19 Embraer-190s (pictured).

India's Tata group to buy Jet Airways?

During this last week, many stories appeared in the Indian newspapers and the financial press around that world that the Indian multinational conglomerate, Mumbai based Tata, was interested in taking over Jet Airways in some form or another.

Various local media sources were reporting the deal between Tata and Jet Airways was so close to being completed that presentations were being made to each respective boards.  Such news sent the struggling airline's share prices skyrocketing to record levels.

The deal appeared to focus on the involvement of the joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines, Tata SIA Airlines which already operates domestic carrier Vistara, which would effectively take over control of Jet. It would have been a deal that would have a deep and far-reaching impact on the aviation industry of India.

However, the brakes on such a deal have well and truly been applied, Tata issued a statement, “Over the last few days there has been growing speculation in the print and electronic media about Tata’s interest in Jet Airways. We would like to clarify that any such discussions have been preliminary and no proposal has been made.”

While the brakes may well have been applied, the deal is not yet at a full stop, there are still investigations going on. Tata is still interested, possibly. Although, sources in the United Arab Emirates have indicated that Etihad Airways, who owns around 24% of Jet Airways is unwilling to sell its stake in the Indian carrier, at rock bottom prices. The Abu Dhabi based Etihad Aviation Group is thought to be interested in pursuing a joint venture arrangement for Jet, however, it will not be making a significant further investment in the Indian operation.

The future for Jet Airways is looking less exciting and promising as the hours' tick by so slowly, but whilst there isn't a deal on the table right at the moment, there are a number of parties watching from the sidelines, ready to take advantage of a bad situation.

Profits down by 86% for Emirates

The Emirates Group announced its half-year results for 2018-19 on Thursday, November 15th, which saw profits fall by 86%.

Whilst the group saw reasonably steady revenue growth during the first half of this financial year, the firm cites a significant rise in oil prices, unfavourable currency movements and devaluation in certain markets along with other challenges of political and economic nature as reasons for its dip in fortunes.

Emirates, one of the worlds largest airlines carried 30.1 million passengers, up 3% and made AED226 million ($62 million) during the six months to September 30th, yet while revenues were up by 10% on last years half-year results to AED 54.4 billion (US$ 14.8 billion) a massive 37% increase in fuel prices combined with the other difficult trading circumstances ate into that profit.

His Highness (HH) Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said: “Emirates and dnata grew steadily in the first half of 2018-19. Demand for our high quality products and services remained healthy, as we won new and return customers across our businesses and this is reflected in our revenue performance. However, the high fuel cost as well as currency devaluations in markets like India, Brazil, Angola and Iran, wiped approximately AED 4.6 billion from our profits.

The AgustaWestland AW169 helicopter 'did not respond to pilot's command' in Leicester City crash

taking off, seconds before crashing.  Captured by BT Sport
The UK's Civil Aviation Authority Air Accidents Investigation Branch has released an initial interim report into the helicopter crash at Leicester City Football Club that caused the death of five people, including the clubs chairman and owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

The report detailed the route the helicopter had taken in the hours before the tragic crash on 27th October. The report indicates the helicopters first flight of the day was from its Fairoaks Airport base in Surrey with the pilot and one passenger on board to go to the London Heliport in Battersea on the banks of the Thames. There it picked up three more passengers before it flew up to Leicester and landed at Leicester City Football Club's training ground at Belvoir Drive. It is then understood that those onboard went to the King Power stadium to watch the match. The pilot and one passenger returned to the training ground, to fly the helicopter back to the stadium and landed in the centre of the pitch. It picked up three people and took off on a flight that was due to go to London's Stanstead airport. However, less than 40 seconds after lifting off, the helicopter started to turn right "contrary to the pilot's left pedal command" the AAIB report states. The cause of the apparent loss of control is still being investigated.

Stobart Air poised to take over FlyBe?

Stobart Air is poised to buy out the troubled British regional airline Flybe, according to Sky News, it is being reported this week.

The broadcaster reported that Bankers at Evercore have been brought in to handle talks about a potential deal, which could see the two firms merged or the FlyBe Group taken over completely by Stobart, who also own Southend Airport.

Flybe has been struggling for some time and recently issued a profits warning, it is expected to lose £12m this year alone, citing Brexit uncertainty, higher fuel prices and the falling value of the British pound as the main causes of its financial hardship.

Another airline said to be interested in taking over the Exeter based FlyBe, is the regional airline Eastern Airways, owned by the Bristow Group. Eastern Airways operates a mixed fleet of British Aerospace Jetstreams, Saab 2000s, ATR72, Embraer E135, E145 and E170 jets on routes within the UK and to Europe.

Neither FlyBe, Stobart or Eastern have made a public statement about the news reports at this stage, however an announcement is expected imminently.

Air India sack operations director who turned up too drunk to fly jet to New Delhi

Arvind Kathpalia, Air India’s director of operations, failed two breath tests before he was scheduled to take controls of an Air India jet scheduled to fly from London Heathrow to New Delhi on Sunday, November 11th.

Air India is carrying out an investigation into his conduct but confirmed today that it had already fired Kathpalia. It is believed that he has also resigned from the board of the state-run airline and India's safety authority has taken away his pilots licence for three years.

The airline says Amitabh Singh, executive director for training, will now take on the operations director’s responsibilities for the foreseeable future.

This is not the first time that Kathpalia has allegedly been intoxicated and under the influence of alcohol when turning up for work. Most recently he had been suspended for a period of three months during 2017 for refusing to take breathalyser tests.

British Airways is celebrating the launch of new flights to the Italian capital city of Rome from London City this week. The new flight runs from Sunday to Friday on Embraer E190 aircraft and rather unexpectedly the carrier chose to welcome passengers on the first flight with a special bust of one of Rome’s most infamous forefathers, Julius Caesar!

Yes, the dictator, the man who ordered the murder of hundreds of thousands of people, waged numerous wars, the man who invaded Britain, was drafted in by British Airways to greet customers on the first flight.  The bust was welcomed on board the Embraer 190 jet by British Airways’ in-flight business manager and fellow Italian Marco Tagliaferri.

British Airways’ airport manager, Andrea Sperini, is also Italian although he was born in Venice said, “I’m very proud to see the Italian capital becoming part of our network. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and a treasury of art, history, traditions, politics and local food - almost anyone can find something to explore and enjoy. “

Richard Hill, Chief Commercial Officer at London City Airport, said: “By adding another major European city to its network, British Airways is creating further choice for tourists and business travellers who want to use London’s most central airport as their bridge to the continent. Like London, Rome is an iconic destination, bursting with culture, history, and home to an international business district, and the route is an attractive addition for customers to and from Italy’s capital city. Ahead of a 20 per cent boost in capacity during 2019, this new service further underlines British Airways’ continued investment in their London City operation.”

Ryanair's corporate private jet up for hire.

Ryanair private jet for hire Photo Ryanair
Never short of an idea to cash in, Ryanair is offering its own corporate jet up for hire again. The jet is back in service and available for hire for the winter period, but it's not your usual company private jet, it's a Boeing 737-700.

Ryanair configures the private jet with 60 leather seats with a generous 48-inch seat pitch in a 2 by 2  arrangement. The aircraft also has a full galley that is capable of rustling up a sausage roll or a full-on fine dining experience and is crewed by normal Ryanair air pilots.

Ryanair’s Robin Kiely said: “We are pleased to announce that our B737 corporate jet is again available for the winter season. It has enjoyed great demand since we first launched it in February 2016. In this past year, the Ryanair corporate jet was booked by many prestigious clients from Champions League soccer teams to world-famous pop stars, who enjoyed an unbeatable Ryanair corporate jet service and excellent rates.”

Photo Ryanair
Should you wish to hire the plane, you don't need to worry about looking out of place at the airport, for the Boeing 737 looks just like any other Ryanair jet, with the giant lettering all down the fuselage. So no one at the airport will know you've splashed the cash to such a large extent.  Thankfully, however, the bright yellow and adverts that are a predominate feature inside the cabin of a usual Ryanair plane are not continued inside the special corporate jet, which has a far more sophisticated interior, as you can see below.

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, we remember them........

At the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, we remember those service personnel that have paid the ultimate price, given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

The Poppy Appeal each November helps us to remember and say thank you to all those that have served, sacrificed and changed our world. The money raised each year goes to help the Royal British Legion to provide lifelong support for the Armed Forces community - serving men and women, veterans, and their families.

Why the poppy?

During the First World War (1914–1918) much of the fighting took place in Western Europe. Previously beautiful countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud: bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow.

Bright red Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) however, were delicate but resilient flowers and grew in their thousands, flourishing even in the middle of chaos and destruction. In early May 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lt Col John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies to write a now famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields'.

McCrae’s poem inspired an American academic, Moina Michael, to make and sell red silk poppies which were brought to England by a French woman, Anna Guérin. The (Royal) British Legion, formed in 1921, ordered 9 million of these poppies and sold them on 11 November that year. The poppies sold out almost immediately and that first ever 'Poppy Appeal' raised over £106,000; a considerable amount of money at the time. This was used to help WW1 veterans with employment and housing.

The following year, Major George Howson set up the Poppy Factory to employ disabled ex-Servicemen. Today, the factory and the Legion's warehouse in Aylesford produces millions of poppies each year.

The demand for poppies in England was so high that few were reaching Scotland. Earl Haig's wife established the 'Lady Haig Poppy Factory' in Edinburgh in 1926 to produce poppies exclusively for Scotland. Over 5 million Scottish poppies (which have four petals and no leaf unlike poppies in the rest of the UK) are still made by hand by disabled ex-Servicemen at Lady Haig's Poppy Factory each year and distributed by our sister charity Poppyscotland.

A range of poppy products are available from The Royal British Legion's Poppy Shop.

In Flanders Fields
Lt Col John McCrae

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

IndiGo changing Airbus order for larger craft

One of India's leading airlines IndiGo and currently the country's India’s largest domestic operator has made a major switch in a recent Airbus order according to reports from news agency Reuters.

The Indian aviation industry is undergoing a period of severe turbulence at the moment with both Air India and Jet Airways experiencing heavy financial difficulties. Therefore it might seem rather surprising that IndiGo, has apparently, switched an order for 125 of the new engine offering of the Airbus A320 jet to the larger A321neo aircraft that also have a greater range.

The airline plans to increase capacity on its route network by around 30% before the end of this financial year and it may expand its route network to take advantage of the consolidation from rivals Jet and Air India.

Air Wisconsin flight attendents vote to authorise strike action.

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA representing the flight attendants of Air Wisconsin, who provides regional air service for United Airlines, confirmed today that the staff voted 99% to authorise strike action.

"Enough is enough. Air Wisconsin Flight Attendants are ready to do whatever it takes to get a new contract. We have made every sacrifice to ensure the stability of the airline while management refuses to offer meaningful pay and work rule improvements. Higher pay, no more delay!" said Ernie Lazernick, AFA Air Wisconsin President.

Negotiations began in July 2016 and are overseen by the National Mediation Board (NMB) and the lack of progress could lead to the NMB declaring that negotiations are deadlocked which releases both parties into a 30-day "cooling off" period leading to a strike deadline. No future negotiations sessions have been scheduled at this time.

The almost unanimous vote for to authorise strike action doesn't automatically mean that the cabin crew will take industrial action, it just gives the Association of Flight Attendants the authority to call a strike, if it should become necessary.  It should perhaps be seen as another tool in the box of the union in its negotiations with the airline.

Air Wisconsin is a regional airline, based in Appleton, Wisconsin operating CRJ-200 regional jets and since March 2018, it has operated exclusively as a United Express regional air carrier.

ATR and Air New Zealand explore the future of a regional aviation ecosystem including hybrid aircraft

European aircraft manufacturer ATR and Air New Zealand have signed an agreement to explore the role of new propulsion technologies could play in the future of the regional aircraft ecosystem.

Under the agreement the partners will investigate the development of these new solutions and the required systems to support them such as airport and regulatory infrastructure, maintenance, ground and flight operations. Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon says with New Zealand’s renewable electricity supply and Air New Zealand’s comprehensive regional network, the country is seen as the ideal test bed for these technologies.

“Hybrid aircraft are expected to enter the market in the next decade or so.  Depending on when hybrid and electric technologies become available for larger turboprop aircraft, we believe there is potential for these to be a viable option for our regional network.
