April passenger numbers up for Norwegian

Norwegian carried more than three million passengers in April, an increase of 16 percent compared to the same month the previous year. As expected, the figures were affected by Easter which was in March in addition to the launch of new long-haul routes.

A total of3,049,249 passengers chose to fly with Norwegian in April; 411,020 more than the same period last year. The total traffic growth (RPK) increased by 44 percent, while the capacity growth (ASK) increased by 51 percent. The load factor was 83 percent, down 3.6 percentage points. The high capacity growth is primarily due to the company’s long-haul routes, which has more than doubled since April last year.

The March and April figures were influenced by the Easter traffic, as also reported in previous month’s report.

Cracked window caused Southwest flight to divert

More mechanical drama for passengers of Southwest Airlines flight occurred on Wednesday as a window appeared to crack midflight.

The aircraft was operating a flight from Chicago to Newark, on Wednesday morning and diverted to Cleveland for maintenance after an aircraft window apparently developed the crack midflight. Passengers on the flight told local media they heard a loud pop and saw a jagged crack in a window. Some stated that one of that one of the window layers shattered.

Passengers seated in the rows around the emergency exit window quickly moved to other vacant seats and indicated there was little panic on the flight, although many were worried in case the window broke completely.

Southwest dismissed passenger's social media photos and reports and stated the flight crew decided to divert because it was just a “potential crack” to the outer pane of a window. The flight made a successful landing at Cleveland, just over an hour after it departed from Chicago’s Midway Airport.

Initial report on the Southwest Airlines 1380 incident released.

The US National Transportation Safety Board has released an update on the investigation into the Southwest Airlines incident of the 17th April that resulted in the death of passenger Jennifer Riordan, a 43-year-old mother-of-two.

The report details that at 11.03am local time, on 17th April a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700,  registration N772SW operating flight 1380, experienced a failure of the left CFM International CFM-56-7B engine and loss of engine inlet and cowling as the aircraft was climbing and had reached an altitude of around 32,000 feet.

It was fragments from the engine inlet and cowling that struck the wing and fuselage, which caused a rapid depressurization after the loss of one of the windows at row 14. The aircraft suffered substantial damage and the crew decided and performed an emergency landing at Philadelphia.

Korean Air staff protest on the streets of Seoul

There is more trouble ahead for Korean Air as many employees staged a protest outside the headquarters late on Friday demanding the resignation of the airline’s chairman Cho Yang-ho.

The workers amassed outside the HQ in Seoul, many carrying placards depicting slogans such as “Cho Yang-ho, OUT” and “No mercy”. The staff, many of whom adorned masks to protect their identities for fear of company retaliation are unhappy with the way the airline is being run and the bad behaviour of Cho Yang-ho's daughters.

The airline has faced both an employee and passenger backlash over the chairman’s youngest daughter Cho Hyun-min being accused of throwing a drink at people at a business meeting last month. And, sister Heather Cho's whole 'nut-rage scandal' from 2014 when she lost her temper over the way she was served nuts in first class on a Korean Air plane. She famously demanded the aircraft return to the gate to have the staff member removed. Following the incident, she apologised, was charged, went to jail, but has since returned to work, this time for the Korean Air hotel affiliate in March.

Recently, chairman Cho Yang-ho has made his daughters step down from their positions at the airline and made a public apology for their behaviour, in an attempt to placate employee and passenger anger. However, the row seems far from over as the staff - including pilots and cabin crew - say they would continue to protest on the streets until the chairman also steps down. They are also seeking a greater level of transparency concerning the airlines' management.

KLM also unofficially acquired the title of the first airline to land at Kallang Airport in May 1937 when due to a tropical storm KLM was diverted to the more or less completed Kallang Airport, which a few weeks later 12rd June 1937 was officially opened.

In celebration of this milestone and its success in Singapore, KLM is offering incredible deals to selected destinations (Athens, Barcelona, Copenhagen, London, Munich and Rome) at special fares from SGD $ 850, - all-in. Amsterdam from SGD 1160 all-in.

Vietnam Airlines A321 lands on the wrong - unfinished - runway

An urgent investigation is underway into how an experienced flight crew of a Vietnam Airlines Airbus landed on the wrong closed runway at Trang Cam Ranh International Airport on Sunday.

The flight, VN7344 from Ho Chi Minh City had 203 passengers and 7 crew aboard when it landed at a runway that was closed as it was still under construction - and not connected rest of the airport's taxiways.

At the time of the incident, the weather was fine and there were no reported problems on the Airbus A321, which rules out the need an urgent emergency landing on a non-operational runway.  However, during the landing, some debris was sucked into the engines causing minor damage.

Vietnam Airlines have reportedly suspended the flight crew while an urgent investigation is carried out into what lead the US pilot to put his aircraft on the wrong landing strip.  It's not clear how the retrieval of the aircraft will take place at the present time and an engineering team is inspecting the damage.
