Buddha Air to add more ATR72-500's to its fleet

It would appear that Nepal’s major private airline 'Buddha Air'  has revealed plans to add four 72-seat ATR 72-500 aircraft to its growing fleet.

The airline flies a mixed fleet of some 10 aircraft and is looking to greatly expand its route network to several Indian cities with the ATR aircraft. “We are working aggressively to increase our market share. That’s why we are making an additional investment of Rs four billion,” Birendra Bahadur Basnet, managing director of Buddha Air told myRepublica.com.

Buddha Air is hoping to serve Kolkata, Dehradun, Varanasi, and Gangtok with the new aircraft, subject to approval from the Nepalese Civil Aviation Authority.  It is understood that Buddha Air will be sourcing the aircraft from the second-hand aircraft market as brand new models would be cost prohibitive for the small airline.

Buddha Air currently employes around 850 people and offers flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa, Biratnagar, Bhadrapur, Bharatpur, Dhangadhi, Simara, Janakpur, Pokhara and Tumlingtar.

Hainan Airlines Named the Cleanest Transpacific Airline

Recently, The International Council on Clean Energy (ICCT) released their new study on fuel-efficiency for 20 airlines operating nonstop flights between the mainland United States, East Asia and Oceania in 2016. China's Hainan Airlines and Japan's All Nippon Airways ranked the first in efficiency performance, leading the least-performing carrier--Qantas Airways--by 64%.

Hainan Airline's high performance reflects its use of Boeing's fuel-efficient aircraft: Dreamliner 787. Of Hainan's 3,200 transpacific flights, covering 9 bases in America and accounting for 14 US-China routes in total, the carrier used Dreamliner 787 for over 80% of these flights. The company currently owns the most US-China routes as well as the biggest fleet of Dreamliner 787, with the total number of 26 aircraft. The use of this aircraft reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 16% compare to other models of aircraft. It also provides travelers with a more comfortable and safe flying experience.

Norwegian airports saw 4 percent growth in air traffic last year.

Collectively, the 45 airports that make up the Norwegian Avinor network experienced a growth of approximately 2.1 million passengers. Avinor Oslo Airport accounted for 1.7 million, which amounts to 6.6 percent of this growth. Among the other airports, Tromsø (8.7 percent), Harstad/Narvik (6.2 percent) and Bergen (2.8 percent) saw the strongest increase.

-Improvements in the Norwegian economy, and consequently greater optimism both among businesses and individuals, is the main reason behind the increase in passenger numbers. Furthermore, the economic upturn that we are seeing internationally, has a positive impact on visitor numbers to Norway as well, says Avinor CEO Dag Falk-Petersen in a comment.

As expected, the North continues to grow

-Avinor has had a proactive strategy for the northern areas for many years. Several airports are undertaking developments and improvements to meet the continuously increasing tourist traffic. Aviation plays a decisive role in national value creation, particularly in Northern Norway where some places are seeing a very high growth in traffic, says Falk-Petersen.

-We expect further growth at about the same rate. In the coming years, we have a number of projects aimed at developing our infrastructure in the North. Developments in Tromsø, building a new airport in Bodø, evaluation of a new airport structure in Lofoten, Ofoten and Vesterålen, evaluation of a new airport in Hammerfest, and a bit further ahead, a new airport in Helgeland, concludes Falk-Petersen.

New, popular routes are important to the tourist industry

Tromsø-Frankfurt was a success throughout last year. In addition, Tromsø had new routes to Palma and Gdansk. The latter opened in December, to a good start. Moreover, the new routes of Widerøe from Oslo to Leknes and Svolvær have been successful, as well as the capacity increases of Mosjøen and Mo i Rana to Oslo.

Bombardier 4 - Boeing 0 ITC find in favour of Bombardier

The aviation industry collectively held its breath for a few tense moments on Friday evening as the US International Trade Commission made its final decision in the long-running dispute between Boeing and Bombardier over the Canadian's impressive CSeries aircraft.

The vast majority of industry commentators and aviation analysts were convinced that the US plane giant Boeing would be victorious and the ITC would uphold the almost 300% import duties the US Commerce Department slapped on the CSeries jets.

Boeing had accused Bombardier of selling its CS100 aircraft to Delta at rates below cost price whilst the company was being supported by the Governments of Canada and the UK. It claimed that it had suffered injury by Bombardier's underpricing of the CSeries in the US market, despite it not actually making a competing aircraft in the same category that customers wanted to buy.

However, the US International Trade Commission voted 4-0 to reject Boeing's arguments and discarded the Commerce Department recommendation to impose the 292% tariffs on sales of Candian's CSeries jets for at least the next five years.

"This was not expected." one surprised UK aviation correspondent, told us on Friday night. "All indications were looking in favour of Boeing."

The BBC's Business Correspondent Julian O'Neill said: "This was an unexpected outcome - the UK and Canadian governments had both forecast a home win for Boeing."

Our own analyst and senior correspondent, Jason Shaw, was equally surprised by the announcement "Boeing is such an incredibly powerful company who spend millions and millions of dollars each year on lobbying politicians, trade and regulatory bodies and administrations that I really thought Bombardier would lose out on this occasion.  It seemed almost inevitable, however, the ITC did not bow to outside pressure and looked at the situation dispassionately and impartially."

The UK's Business Secretary Greg Clark said it was "excellent news for the dedicated workforce in Northern Ireland (where the wings for the CSeries are made) and supply chain across the UK, who have a great future ahead.  -  The decision by the International Trade Commission confirms what the UK and Canadian Governments working hand in hand has maintained from the outset, that this case is unjustified. We are pleased that the ITC have now recognised this,"
airBaltic another CSeries customer, praise the aircraft
for its better than expected performance

Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed the move, saying it was "good news" for UK industry, "Bombardier and its innovative workforce play a vital role in the Northern Ireland economy," she said.

The ITC did not give reasons for its unanimous decision on Friday, however, Bombardier, whose shares jumped by 15% on Friday evening released a statement stating  -
Today's decision is a victory for innovation, competition, and the rule of law. It is also a victory for U.S. airlines and the U.S. traveling public. The C Series is the most innovative and efficient new aircraft in a generation. Its development and production represent thousands of jobs in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. We are extremely proud of our employees, investors and suppliers who have worked together to bring this remarkable aircraft to the market. With this matter behind us, we are moving full speed ahead with finalizing our partnership with Airbus. Integration planning is going well and we look forward to delivering the C Series to the U.S. market so that U.S. airlines and the U.S. flying public can enjoy the many benefits of this remarkable aircraft.
This is not the end of the matter, the US Plane maker has already threatened more action against Bombardier, as their statement issued on Friday indicates.
We are disappointed that the International Trade Commission did not recognize the harm that Boeing has suffered from the billions of dollars in illegal government subsidies that the Department of Commerce found Bombardier received and used to dump aircraft in the U.S. small single-aisle airplane market. Those violations have harmed the U.S. aerospace industry, and we are feeling the effects of those unfair business practices in the market every day.
While we disagree with the ITC’s conclusion today, we will review the Commission’s more detailed opinions in full as they are released in the coming days.
Boeing remains confident in the facts of our case and will continue to document any harm to Boeing and our extensive U.S. supply chain that results from illegal subsidies and dumped pricing. We will not stand by as Bombardier’s illegal business practices continue to harm American workers and the aerospace industry they support. Global trade only works if everyone adheres to the rules we have all agreed to. That’s a belief we will continue to defend.
"Boeing remains bullish and seems to suffer from selective memory recall," Jason Shaw says, indicating that many times Boeing products have been sold at prices vastly below its list prices and far lower what numerous analysts estimate are cost prices, yet whilst taken advantage US government investments and substantial tax breaks. He also warned that the dispute isn't yet over, "The US manufacturer can still appeal the decision by the ITC, from its statement, it looks like that is a distinct possibility - we've not heard the last from Boeing on this subject."

20 ATR aircraft for Silver Airways

ATR announces its first deal of 2018 which sees the introduction of the ATR -600 series in the US, to be operated by Silver Airways. The airline will introduce 20 ATR -600 aircraft into its fleet, of which 16 will be ATR 42-600s and four will be ATR 72-600s. This follows a deal between ATR and Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) for the purchase of 15 ATR -600s, of which 12 will be ATR 42-600s and three will be ATR 72-600s. These aircraft, along with five from an existing order between ATR and NAC, will be leased to Silver Airways, making them the first operator of ATR -600 series aircraft in the US.

The aircraft order is also particularly significant given that it commemorates the 100th new aircraft order that NAC has placed with the world’s leading regional aircraft manufacturer. It is further testament to the lessor’s commitment to strengthening its position as the global leader in the regional aircraft leasing space.

The delivery and subsequent entry into service of the first -600 aircraft under the livery of Silver Airways will take place in March of this year. The aircraft, an ATR 42-600, will be configured with 46 seats in a 2-2 seating configuration, with a pitch of up to 32 inches. The remaining deliveries are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2020. Crew training will be conducted by ATR at its new training facility in Miami, which is home to a Full Flight Simulator (FFS) for the ATR -600 series aircraft.

Turkish Airlines and Air Moldova have signed a codeshare agreement

Air Moldova, the largest airline and flag carrier of the Republic of Moldova, and Turkish Airlines, national flag carrier of Turkey, announced the signature of a codeshare agreement, effective as of 29 January 2018.

Through this codeshare partnership, Turkish Airlines and Air Moldova will reciprocally add their flight codes on Istanbul – Kishinev v.v. flights operated by both parties.

“As Turkish Airlines, we are glad to be a codeshare partner with Air Moldova. As we already have a beneficial cooperation, we believe that this agreement will improve our already good relations and enhance our commercial cooperation to the next level. With the introduction of joint flights between both parties, passengers would enjoy more travel alternatives between Moldova and Turkey through the combined flights.“ said Bilal EkÅŸi, Turkish Airlines’ Deputy Chairman & CEO.

American Airlines sees profits fall

American Airlines reported Thursday that fourth-quarter profit slipped 11 percent as higher costs for fuel and labor offset rising revenue.

The world’s biggest airline also predicted that 2018 earnings would easily surpass Wall Street’s expectations, a sign of continuing strong demand for travel.

Still, American couldn’t dodge investor concern over too much growth in the airline industry, and the company’s shares were headed lower for a second straight day.

United triggered a sharp drop in airline stocks on Wednesday when it disclosed plans to grow passenger-carrying capacity by 4 percent to 6 percent for the next three years. Investors worry that such aggressive growth will cause a glut of seats that will lead to lower airfares and lower airline profits.

American plans to grow, but not as rapidly — more like 2.5 percent to 3 percent this year.

On a call with analysts Thursday, Chairman and CEO Doug Parker argued that American is growing in a more disciplined manner than “in the old days,” when carriers expanded widely during good times — often in competitors’ strongest markets.

Emirates to launch non-stop Dubai-Newark service with a second daily flight from 1 June

Emirates will introduce a new non-stop service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Dubai from 1st June 2018, adding to its existing daily flight which operates with a stop in Athens, Greece.

The new non-stop service will be operated with an Emirates Boeing 777-300ER, offering 8 suites in First Class, 42 seats in Business, 306 in Economy Class, and 19 tonnes of belly-hold cargo capacity. Flight EK223 will depart Dubai at 0300am and arrive in Newark at 0900am. The return flight EK224 departs Newark at 1150am, arriving in Dubai at 0820am the next day.  This new timing complements the existing Emirates service, as it provides travellers with a new option of a morning arrival in Newark, and a morning departure.

The morning arrival in Dubai also means east-bound travellers can conveniently explore one of the world’s most dynamic cities on a stopover day tour, before taking an evening connection to another destination on Emirates’ global network.

Enhanced connectivity

Emirates’ non-stop service to Newark will offer travellers in northern New Jersey enhanced global connectivity, particularly those heading to Africa, the Far East, and the Indian sub-continent. This is a boon for ethnic communities such as the nearly 700,000 Indian Americans residing in the greater New York area, who will have one-stop access to nine Indian cities on Emirates’ global network.

Robert Burns announced as Norwegian’s first Scottish tail fin hero

Norwegian  has chosen 'Burns Night' to proudly to announce that Scottish poet Robert Burns will become its first Scottish ‘tail fin hero’. The renowned poet’s portrait will grace the tail fin of a Norwegian Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft which will take to the skies later this Spring.

The announcement comes on Burns Night, an annual event to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns on the anniversary of his birthday – 25th January. The first Burns supper was held in July 1801 when Burns’ close friends got together to mark the fifth anniversary of his death. The night included performances of Burn’s work and was such a resounding success they decided to hold it again, beginning the tradition of Burns Night!

Since Norwegian’s first aircraft took to the skies, the airline has always honoured iconic figures on the tails of its aircraft, using personalities who symbolise the spirit of Norwegian by pushing boundaries, challenging the norm and inspiring others.

To reflect Norwegian’s rapid growth in the UK, where it now flies 5 million UK passengers each year to more than 50 destinations, the airline is planning a series of UK tail fin heroes. Robert Burns will become Norwegian’s sixth UK tail fin hero and first Scottish hero, following the announcement of rock legend Freddie Mercury, footballer Bobby Moore, children’s authorRoald Dahl, pioneering pilot Amy Johnson, author Jane Austen and aviation maverick Sir Freddie Laker.
