Jet2 the most punctual airline in the UK

The low-cost and friendly Jet2 has today been named the most punctual airline in the UK over the past 12 months, this is according to data by the world’s leading travel intelligence company OAG.

This makes Jet2 the only UK airline to be awarded a 5-star rating, with an On-Time Performance (OTP) score of 87.5% percent, which represents the percentage of flights running on time over the past 12 months.

The figures indicate the airline outperformed any other UK carrier during this period by 3% percent, and they come on the back of a successful summer which saw them top the OAG’s monthly rankings for OTP in June, July and August consecutively. This industry-leading performance is incredibly impressive as the airline has rapidly expanded its flying operations as well as opening not one, but two new bases - Birmingham and Stansted.

Ryanair Steal Bellew Back

Malaysian Airlines bosses were left stunned and speechless when Peter Bellew announced he was quitting the company as CEO just a week after he gave firm commitments to stay at the airline.

Malaysian Airlines will now, according to a statement, arrange a board meeting of the directors to discuss the matter and release a statement in due course. “Our operations and services continue as normal and our commitment and priority are our customers.  The turnaround of Malaysia Airlines remains on track and on schedule as per the MAS Recovery Plan,” the statement advised. Lufthansa and EasyJet make bids for Alitalia but the sale is delayed.

The budget airline EasyJet and the mammoth Lufthansa Group are among a number of companies that have put in bids for all or part of the financially troubled Italian airline, Alitalia.  However, the sale has been delayed as the Italian Government loans the airline another 300 million euros.

Lufthansa confirmed it had submitted an offer letter on Monday, expressing its interest in establishing a "NewAlitalia". Lufthansa has opted not to make an offer for the complete Airline but has stated interest in only parts of the Global network traffic and European and domestic point-to-point business.

The offer includes a concept for a newly structured Alitalia with a focused business model ("NewAlitalia"), which could develop long-term economic prospects.  "The responsible commissioners have agreed to maintain confidentiality regarding the details of the offer," said Lufthansa, however some details are already appearing in Italian media, including amounts Lufthansa and others have offered.

Bombardier and Airbus to partner on C Series

It's been confirmed today that European aerospace firm Airbus is to partner with Canadian firm Bombardier on the C Series programme.

The CSeries programme has faced a series of problems, most recently the trade dispute in the US that could potentially impose a 300% import tariff on the aircraft.

The US aircraft makers Boeing instantly dismissed the new arrangement calling the deal "Questionable"  in posts on social media, "This looks like a questionable deal between two heavily state-subsidized competitors to skirt US Government findings. Everyone should play by the same rules for free and fair trade"
Of course, Boeing don't mention the hundreds of billions of dollars they receive in tax breaks nor the fact that the company received $457 million in federal grants, which are typically non-repayable, between 2000 and 2014. In addition to that, there is the $64 billion in federal loans and loan guarantees.

A corresponding agreement was signed yesterday which brings together Airbus’ global reach with Bombardier’s newest, state-of-the-art jet aircraft family. It is a deal that is designed to fully unlock the value and potential of the C Series jets and create significant new value for customers, suppliers, employees and shareholders.

Under the agreement, Airbus will provide procurement, sales and marketing, and customer support expertise to the C Series Aircraft Limited Partnership (CSALP), the entity that manufactures and sells the C Series. At closing, Airbus will acquire a 50.01% interest in CSALP. Bombardier and Investissement Québec (IQ) will own approximately 31% and 19% respectively.

They are reporting that any such offer is almost certainly going to be rejected by the state commissioners who are managing the Italian airlines affairs during its sale. Lufthansa has been approached for comments, but have so far refused to speculate on rumours.

Drone Hits Commercial Flight in Canada

A drone has collided with a commercial aircraft in Canada, the first such incident in the country, according to the Transport Ministry.

The drone struck one of the plane's wings, while six passengers and two crew members were aboard.
The aircraft sustained only minor damage and was able to land safely, the Canadian transport minister said.

Earlier this year, Canada announced that it was making it illegal to fly recreational drones near airports.

The law prohibited airborne drones within 5.5km (3.5 miles) of an airport and restricted the height of a drone's flight to 90 metres (300ft).

Those breaking the restrictions could face fines of up to 25,000 Canadian dollars ($20,000, £15,000).
The Skyjet flight was heading to Quebec City's Jean Lesage International Airport when the drone hit it on 12 October.

Malaysia Watching A330neo's

Malaysia Airlines is watching the testing of the Airbus A330neo due to enter service next year as it evaluates an order for around 30 long-haul aircraft, CEO Peter Bellew said on Friday.

Malaysia Airlines is transforming its operations as it recovers from two tragedies in 2014, when flight MH370 disappeared in what remains a mystery and flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

“We need to work out longer-term which aircraft will replace the A330-300 we have. That’s a choice between (Boeing) 787-9s and the A330neos,” Bellew said on the sidelines of the CAPA Global Summit in London.

“We’ll be watching test flights of A330neos with great interest over the next 6 months,” he said, adding he would also keep a close eye on the performance of the Rolls-Royce engines that power the jet.

New route to Azerbaijan for Etihad

Etihad Airways has announced plans to launch scheduled flights between Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and Baku, the capital city of the Republic of Azerbaijan, effective 2 March 2018.

Baku, which sits on the Caspian Sea, is the country’s primary gateway and commercial centre.

Pilot openly criticises Ryanair's negotiations

In a surprising and brave move, a serving Ryanair pilot has publically criticised the airlines' management's internal negotiating structures for flyers.

Imelda Comer, a captain for the Irish airline is the first to openly display her unhappiness and dissatisfaction with the airline. She made her criticisms in a hard-hitting but civil and polite letter delivered by hand to the Dublin head office.

The brave open stance of Captain Comer refers to the fear of being among many pilots concerned about victimisation for speaking out in her letter to the CSO Michael O'Leary. Her letter indicates notes that Ryanair has previously either ignored EERC communications or falsely claimed they were not from legitimate representatives.  The letter, she confirmed, was from the EERC group made up exclusively of Ryanair pilots from several countries.

Ryanair has previously threatened or conducted legal action against EERC members as well as demoting or suspending them. Comer also reiterates the demands of pilots, including permanent local contracts negotiated by 1 January 2018, benchmarking of conditions with regional competitor airlines, and the right to have professional assistance in negotiations.

Boeing V Bombardier - Trade War Looms

Photo Reuters

The battle between the US aviation giant Boeing and the much smaller Canadian manufacturer Bombardier continues to rumble on with almost alarming ferocity.

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, in Washington for US-Canada trade talks, warned his US counterpart, President Donald Trump he would block Canadian armed forces from buying Boeing aircraft if the US Government presses ahead with its outrageous plans to slap duties and tariffs of 300 percent on Bombardier C Series aeroplanes.

The battle has been bubbling up for some time and many see it as a key ingredient to start a trade war between the North American neighbours. It's already caused consternation and possible trading hostilities between the US and the UK, where the Canadian manufacturer employs some 4000 people making wings for the C Series jets at the former Shorts Brothers factory in Northern Ireland.

Mr Trudeau met Trump at the White House this week for discussions on the North American Free Trade Agreement and confirmed he raised “directly” the Bombardier issue. “I highlighted to the president how we disagree vehemently with Commerce’s decision to bring in countervailing and anti-dumping duties against Bombardier, that we feel this is not something that is warranted and quite frankly something that we look very negatively upon,” The Canadian Prime Minister said after the meeting.

Air Tahiti and ATR celebrate 30 year partnership

There was much celebration as Air Tahiti and plane maker ATR celebrate 30 years of working together.  Since the very beginning, Air Tahiti has been one of the cornerstones of the ATR programme, with the arrival of its first ATR 42 in Tahiti on January 21st, 1987. At the time, the airline chose the ATR as the most efficient solution to the problem of connectivity presented by Polynesia’s islands.  Air Tahiti operates a huge network in a space as large as Europe. The ATR quickly proved itself, with its flexibility allowing it to be the optimal tool on the atolls’ short runways as well as for much longer journeys.

ATR and Air Tahiti have grown together, with the success of one creating new opportunities for the other. Throughout all of the technical evolutions of the aircraft, Air Tahiti has enriched its flight operations and opened new routes, with the longest connecting Tahiti and Mangareva (1,600 km). The reliability of the ATR, its easy maintenance, high comfort and low operating costs have continuously convinced the airline to expand its fleet with new aircraft.
