Porter Airlines is North America’s Best Regional Airline........

Porter Airlines was selected as Best Regional Airline in North America at the 2024 Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The category includes airlines that primarily or exclusively fly within North America. Over 100 countries participate in the world’s largest airline passenger satisfaction survey to select the award winners. This year’s presentation ceremony was held in London, England.

“Porter has redefined air travel for 17 years. As our network quickly expands across North America, we are offering economy travellers an overall experience they will not find with any other carrier, like free beer and wine served in glassware, a selection of free premium snacks, high-quality fresh meal options, plus free streaming WiFi for all passengers,” said Michael Deluce, CEO, Porter Airlines. “We also understand that a quality product must be accompanied by the highest level of service and genuine hospitality. This prestigious award speaks to the unwavering commitment from our team members to provide this for all of our passengers.”

Porter continues to challenge the definition of economy air travel across North America by emphasizing an overall elevated economy experience on board. This includes a two-by-two configuration on every aircraft, ensuring no middle seats on any flight. The distinct regional service that Porter has developed since 2006 is the foundation for this standard in a network that now stretches across North America.

In the past 18 months, the airline has:

Hired more than 2,000 new team members
Taken delivery of 35 new Embraer E195-E2s
Total fleet size of 64, including 29 Dash 8-400 aircraft
Announced dozens of new routes and 20 new destinations

The airline now flies as far west as Victoria and as far east as St. John’s in Canada. It is also making further headway into the U.S., currently with five destinations in Florida, as well as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas. Phoenix will also launch this winter.

“We congratulate Porter Airlines on this great achievement in being named the Best Regional Airline in North America at the 2024 Awards. This global region is a very competitive market, and Porter Airlines success demonstrates the success of their product that is so well supported by excellent staff service,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO, Skytrax.

Manchester Airport operating smoothly following yesterdays power outage.

Manchester Airport has been operating smoothly today, the airport confirmed this evening, with all systems working as normal and no ongoing issues following yesterday's power outage.

The airport was left in chaos on Sunday after a fault with a cable sent a power surge of power across the electrical network, causing a blackout in many parts of the airport. The power outage also took the airport's baggage delivery system offline causing thousands of bags to miss departing flights or massively delayed being reunited with arriving passengers.  A number of flights were delayed, cancelled or diverted to other airports - including London Gatwick and Heathrow.

Passengers due to fly from Manchester today and over the next few days should go online to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport. They should, according to the airport, follow their airline's instructions on when to arrive at the airport - usually two hours in advance of a short-haul flight and three hours ahead of a long-haul flight.

The airport is slightly busier than usual as airlines get passengers impacted by the disruption onto new flights. This is likely to be the case over the coming days. The airport promised to deploy extra staff in place to help passengers.

Passengers whose bags did not make it onto flights yesterday are advised to stay in contact with their airlines. The airport was working with airlines, their ground handling agents and other partners to get those bags out to passengers as soon as possible. Many were placed on flights last night and today and have already been reunited with their owners.

The airport said "We would like to thank passengers for their patience. We would also like to thank our staff as well as our partners around the airport for their hard work."

Jet2 said: "Due to the outage, some flights departed with reduced or no luggage as we were unable to load bags onto our aircraft, as the baggage system at the airport was inoperable during the outage." It advised that its UK-based Ground Operations Team would work hard to ensure that baggage was reunited with passengers as soon as possible.  "We understand how frustrating this situation must be and although the situation was beyond our control we will do everything we can to get all luggage to its final destination as soon as we possibly can. " the airline said.

easyJet to digitise onboard Aircraft Technical log to cut down on paper use and weight

easyJet is replacing weighty Paper Technical and Cabin Logs previously used by cabin crew, engineers, ground crew and flight crew with the new e-techlog system, which will be rolled out across its 346-strong fleet of aircraft during 2025.

The move represents another way the airline is trying to reduce its operational waste, with the transition expected to save more than 300,000 sheets of paper from being printed and stored every year.

Digitising the technical and cabin logbook will save over 300,000 sheets of paper records from being printed and stored every year.

Transitioning from paper to digital reporting will also increase efficiency for easyJet's flight crew, cabin crew and engineering teams.

The e-techlog system is from renowned aviation technology company, Ultramain, and will be rolled out to easyJet’s 346-strong fleet of the Airbus A320 family by the end of 2025.

Additionally, the new e-techlog system will help streamline the maintenance reporting process for flight crew, cabin crew and engineering – enabling easyJet to increase line maintenance productivity in the process.

Bolstered by real-time flight and cabin crew reports, the new system will in particular aid easyJet with fewer ground delays, lowering aircraft maintenance times to enable greater aircraft availability and ultimately less disruption for passengers.

David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet, said:  “Rolling out Ultramain’s state-of-the-art technology across our fleet of aircraft will not only improve the reporting processes for our crew and engineering teams but will also see fewer delays on the ground, which will help further enhance the travel experience for our customers.

“Our continued investment into innovative solutions like the e-techlog means we’ll not only find quicker solutions to defects but by cutting our paper use and the weight on the aircraft, we are also taking another small but important step to reduce our environmental impact too.”

Blackshape's Gabriél to take to the skies again

Blackshape has confirmed that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has lifted the grounding order on the Gabriél aircraft. This decision marks a pivotal moment for Blackshape, reaffirming the safety, integrity, and reliability of the Gabriél.

The lifting of the grounding order follows an exhaustive and thorough investigation into the incident involving a Gabriél aircraft in Malaysia in February 2024. EASA’s findings confirm that the accident was not due to any design or manufacturing defect in the Gabriél aircraft. Blackshape worked closely with EASA, providing all necessary support and data throughout the investigation to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events. The lifting of the grounding order by EASA underscores the inherent safety and robustness of the Gabriél aircraft when operated within the prescribed guidelines. The aircraft in question was grounded by Blackshape prior to the incident for maintenance requirements. The grounding order had been communicated to the customer and to the European Aviation Safety Agency, EASA.

Niccolò Chierroni, CEO of Blackshape, said: “Blackshape is always committed to advancing aviation safety and delivering the highest quality aircraft to our customers. We are certain that the Gabriél fleet will continue to set benchmarks for performance and reliability in the aviation industry.”

Joby Announces ‘ElevateOS’ Software Suite for Air Taxi Operations

Joby Aviation, a company developing electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, announced this week it has received Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) authorization to use a suite of software tools developed in-house, called ‘ElevateOS’, that are designed to enable high-tempo, on-demand air taxi operations.

Joby has developed proprietary software to support revolutionary high-tempo, on-demand air taxi operations

Software suite has undergone real-world testing over the past two years, leveraging Joby’s Part 135 certification

The ElevateOS operating system, which will be introduced during a virtual presentation later today, includes pilot tools, operations and schedule management software, a mobile-first rider app, and an intelligent matching engine. The matching engine is similar to those used by ride-hailing apps today and pairs passengers with available aircraft and landing infrastructure to deliver journeys that are as efficient as possible. Joby plans to use ElevateOS to support its own air taxi operations, as well as making it available to selected partners who purchase the aircraft, as part of a wider services package.

During today’s presentation, Joby will cover a range of other preparations it is making to support the launch of commercial air taxi operations as soon as 2025, including pilot training and the simulation of its planned air taxi service using a conventional aircraft that carries the same number of passengers as Joby’s aircraft. Utilizing a Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate granted by the Federal Aviation Administration more than two years ago, Joby has already been able to use its ElevateOS software to test core aspects of its planned operations, by:

Offering Joby team members a true, on-demand passenger service, enabling them to book flights with free choice of timing, origin and destination, using the Joby rider app
Matching passengers with similar routes to each other, using automation tools
Taking payments from Joby team members and external customers for whole-aircraft chartered flights
Integrating the use of the Joby pilot app, rider app and back-end operational software
Joby has been actively developing and testing these software tools, in-house, since acquiring Uber Elevate, the air taxi division of Uber in 2021. In 2019, Uber Elevate launched and ran UberCopter, the world’s first on-demand, multi-modal air taxi service in New York City, using traditional helicopters that were bookable via the Uber app.

“The air taxi service we plan to deliver isn’t like any sort of air travel that’s existed before. We expect travelers to book on-demand and to be boarding an aircraft just minutes later, much like the experience of using ground-based ridesharing today. That required us to totally rethink the software and the operations of these aircraft,” said Eric Allison, Chief Product Officer at Joby and former Head of Uber Elevate. “We’ve built ElevateOS from the ground up to enable high-tempo, on-demand flights that will deliver true time savings and seamless mobility to customers.

“ElevateOS is the result of many years of iteration and real-life experience and we’re confident it is the most sophisticated, efficient, and flexible suite of air operations tools available today.”

Joby is undertaking the following to prepare for operations:

Training Electric Air Taxi Pilots: Joby has developed an aircraft-specific training course that prepares qualified commercial pilots to fly the Joby aircraft in about six weeks. The course includes the use of immersive flight simulation training devices being developed in partnership with CAE, a global leader in aviation training. Additionally, Joby has already begun offering private pilot training and ground school as part of its future pilot training academy.

Building the Maintenance Workforce of the Future: Joby received its Part 145 Maintenance Certificate earlier this year and is developing a comprehensive maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) strategy to ensure maximum aircraft utilization in markets around the globe. Joby received a $1 million grant from the FAA to support the development of maintenance training programs.

Implementing Rigorous Safety Systems: Joby was the first electric air taxi company to have a Safety Management System accepted into the FAA’s Voluntary Program for Air Operations, supporting the Company’s Part 135 operations. It was also the first air taxi company to be awarded the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations Stage 1 Certification, administered by the International Business Aviation Council, following a safety audit in 2023.

“We are leading the industry in the certification and manufacturing of our electric air taxi as well as in our preparations for commercial service,” said Bonny Simi, President of Operations at Joby. “This is rigorous work that is required for any company to provide efficient and seamless air taxi operations, and many of these items have been years in the making.”

Joby’s electric air taxi is designed to carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph, offering high-speed mobility with a fraction of the noise produced by helicopters and zero operating emissions.

Joby intends to operate its aircraft in the U.S. markets including New York City and Los Angeles alongside partner Delta Air Lines, and in the United Arab Emirates, where the Company has a six-year exclusive agreement to provide air taxi services in Dubai. Joby will also partner with local operators in certain overseas geographies, as well as supporting direct sales of its aircraft to business customers such as Mukamalah, the aviation arm of Saudi Aramco, and to potential government partners such as the U.S. Department of Defense.

It will be the second research mission that IIAS has conducted with Virgin Galactic. It follows ‘Galactic 05’ in November 2023, which tested novel healthcare technologies and examined how fluids behaved in low gravity to help inform designs for future medical technologies and life-support systems. The mission is anticipated to take place within the first year of Delta commercial service, which remains on track to commence in 2026.

“We were thrilled with the results from our fluid cell experiment on ‘Galactic 05’, which demonstrated our ability to accurately predict the behaviour of fluid in a container in a weightless environment. We’ll be expanding on that research for our next mission, and I’ll be working to demonstrate our ability to control the behaviour of the liquid as well,” said astronaut and IIAS Director of Human Spaceflight Operations Kellie Gerardi. “The quality and repeatability of the microgravity environment provided by Virgin Galactic’s system is truly game-changing and the potential for a ‘fly, fix, fly’ approach opens the door to many exciting possibilities for IIAS to make discoveries that benefit future explorers.”

The IIAS astronaut crew expected to participate in the research mission includes:

Kellie Gerardi, a bioastronautics researcher and IIAS Director of Human Spaceflight Operations from the U.S. Gerardi previously flew as a payload specialist on the ‘Galactic 05’ research mission.

Dr. Shawna Pandya, a physician, aquanaut, bioastronautics researcher, and Director of IIAS’s Space Medicine Group, from Canada.

Dr. Norah Patten, an aeronautical engineer and bioastronautics researcher from Ireland.

The mission is designed to enable IIAS to introduce new research while also expanding upon the results from ‘Galactic 05,’ during which astronaut Kellie Gerardi was able to successfully validate a fluid behaviour theory within the high-quality microgravity conditions available through Virgin Galactic’s unique flight system. The IIAS crew plans to fly additional fluid cells, with payload enhancements including upgrades to camera quality and accelerometer measurements.
