Archer gets FAA certification to start operating commercial airline

Archer Aviation Inc. a leader in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, today announced its subsidiary, Archer Air, has received its Part 135 Air Carrier & Operator Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

This certificate allows Archer to begin operating aircraft commercially to refine its systems and procedures in advance of launching Midnight into service for airlines like United Airlines when it receives Midnight’s Type Certification. Receiving the Part 135 certificate signals that Archer Air has developed, and demonstrated to the FAA its adherence to, the necessary policies and procedures to begin operating aircraft commercially in accordance with the stringent safety and operational standards set forth by the FAA. Today’s achievement is another key step that demonstrates Archer’s work with the FAA continues to gain momentum as Archer is now one of two air taxi manufacturers in the world to have announced receipt of a Part 135 certificate from the FAA.

In addition to its Part 135 certificate, Archer previously announced it has received its Part 145 certificate from the FAA allowing it to perform specialized aircraft repair services. This means Archer has now received the two key operational certificates required from the FAA for it to be in a position to begin its air taxi operations when Midnight receives its Type Certification. The FAA also recently issued the final airworthiness criteria for the Midnight aircraft. The completion of the Part 135 certification process involved five rigorous stages, which entailed the submission of extensive documentation of operational manuals and procedures, as well as Archer’s pilots needing to demonstrate proficiency with those manuals and procedures under FAA observation.

"We are honored to receive the Part 135 Air Carrier & Operator Certificate from the FAA, which is another important stepping stone on the way to commencing commercial air taxi operations with our Midnight aircraft," said Adam Goldstein, Founder and CEO of Archer. HTM orders up to three Airbus H145 helicopters for offshore wind operations

HTM Helicopters has placed an order for one Airbus H145 helicopter, with options for two additional helicopters of the same type. The new helicopter will be used in offshore wind operations, transporting technicians and materials to wind farm turbines off the coasts of Germany and France.

“Over the past 15 years in the offshore wind business, we’ve seen projects move further out from the coast and require additional payload which has led us to add additional H145s to our fleet,” said Bernd Brucherseifer, Managing Director for HTM Helicopters. “In addition to excellent OEI performance, the helicopter offers the chance to quickly perform role changes for various customer missions and is very reliable and easy to maintain. The H145 is the perfect tool for the operation and maintenance phase in offshore wind operations, and we will see a lot more demand for it in this market in the near future."

“The H145 is ideally suited for offshore wind operations due to the significant capacity it offers for transporting passengers and cargo, as well as its outstanding hover performance for hoisting operations,” said Axel Humpert, Senior Vice President and Head of the H145 Programme at Airbus. “As our long-standing partner, we’re pleased HTM has seen the value that the H145 provides and continued to place their trust in our helicopters as they expand their fleet.”

HTM was the first operator to take delivery of a five-bladed H145 to be used for offshore wind operations in 2021. In late 2023, HTM's aircraft was used in a world-premiere trial led by Airbus to hoist two crew members into the nacelles of floating wind turbines in Hywind Tampen.

This order will add to HTM’s current fleet which features 18 Airbus helicopters, including a mix of H125s, H135s and H145s in use to support a variety of missions. With the delivery of the newly ordered helicopter, HTM’s total H145 fleet will grow to eight helicopters (10 including options). Five of those H145’s (seven including options) will be used to support offshore missions.

Aberdeen and Glasgow airport workers reject pay offer and head for strike action...

Approximately 300 airport workers based in Glasgow and Aberdeen have rejected the latest pay offer and are looking to the possibility of strike action this summer.

The ICTS Central Search workers at Aberdeen and Glasgow airports have rejected a basic pay increase of four per cent backdated to January 2024, plus a £500 one-off payment. Therefore, the union Unite has confirmed that it now has “no option” but to move towards initiating industrial action ballots ahead of the summer holiday rush.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Workers at Aberdeen and Glasgow airports have emphatically rejected ICTS’ miserable pay offer. The company is extremely profitable, and it can easily afford to make a far better offer to our members.  Unite will fully back our ICTS Central Search members in their fight for better jobs, pay and conditions.”

ICTS Central Search employs around 220 workers at Glasgow Airport and around 100 workers at Aberdeen Airport. The workers deal with passengers directly in the security search areas and process them for flights. The workers also cover mobile patrols, control access posts, screen all deliveries and deal with emergency services.

A spokesperson for ICTS Central Search stated: "Generous pay proposals have been tabled that would give staff a minimum of 4% increase as well as a lump sum payment.  This is in addition to the 15-28% increases our staff have received over the last two years. We would like to reassure the travelling public that their security is our priority and there will be no disruptions.”

Temporary security officers in Glasgow Temporary security officers in Glasgow positions are currently advertised at earning £12.78 per hour, based on a minimum 20-hour-per-week contract. That's 78p an hour more than a comparable position at Edinburgh Airport comparable position at Edinburgh Airport.

Airbus and Helsing to collaborate on artificial intelligence for the teaming of manned and unmanned military aircraft

Airbus Defence and Space and Helsing, Europe’s leading defence AI and software company, signed a framework cooperation agreement at the ILA aerospace trade show in Berlin. According to the agreement, the companies will work together on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies which will be used in a future  Wingman system. This unmanned fighter-type aircraft will operate with current combat jets and receive its tasks from a pilot in a command aircraft such as the Eurofighter.

Airbus is also presenting its Wingman concept for the first time at the ILA. As a response  to increasing operational requirements by the German Air Force, the Wingman is intended to augment the capabilities of manned combat aircraft with uncrewed platforms that can carry weapons and other effectors.

"The current conflicts on Europe's borders show how important air superiority is," said Mike Schoellhorn, CEO at Airbus Defence and Space. "Manned-Unmanned Teaming will play a central role in achieving air superiority: With an unmanned Wingman at their side, fighter pilots can operate outside the danger zone. They give the orders and always have the decision-making authority. Supported by AI, the wingman then takes over the dangerous tasks, including target reconnaissance and destruction or electronic jamming and deception of enemy air defence systems."

Hilton Set to Double Lifestyle Portfolio To 700 Hotels Within Next Four Years

Recent Acquisitions of Graduate Hotels and NoMad Brands and the Appointment of a New Global Lifestyle President Affirm Hilton’s Focus on Lifestyle Category Expansion

With nearly 350 existing lifestyle hotels and another 350 expected to join the portfolio by 2028, Hilton is set to double its presence in the fast-growing lifestyle category in the next four years. The recent addition of Graduate Hotels and NoMad to Hilton’s portfolio, coupled with increasing guest and owner demand, has positioned the company to further accelerate lifestyle category growth.

After adding more than 50 new lifestyle hotels and approving another 100 in 2023, Hilton anticipates opening more than 100 new hotels this year across its lifestyle brands, each designed to meet the increased enthusiasm from guests for distinct and localized travel experiences. This year will also mark the debut of Hilton’s 400th property in the category.

The accelerated growth will be supported by the addition of the Graduate and NoMad brands. NoMad’s flagship London hotel and more than 30 existing Graduate locations will be available on Hilton’s booking channels later this summer, in addition to new Graduate hotels that will open this year in Princeton, N.J. and Auburn, Ala.

“As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hilton’s entry into the lifestyle segment, we look ahead to even more rapid growth with a powerhouse line-up of brands that will meet the needs of developers and guests alike in some of the world’s most desirable locations,” said Kevin Jacobs, chief financial officer and president, global development, Hilton. “The recent addition of the Graduate and NoMad brands to our lifestyle and luxury lifestyle portfolio will accelerate our growth as we look for more opportunities to deliver the exceptional experiences guests want in the world’s top hotel destinations.”

NoMad to Drive Luxury Lifestyle Category Growth

Earlier this year, Hilton announced plans to expand the NoMad luxury lifestyle brand from its existing London flagship location to high-end markets around the world. NoMad, a meticulously designed brand defined by exceptional food and beverage, captivating interior design and exemplary service, will bring Hilton travellers a new sophisticated option for luxury stays in some of the world’s greatest locations.

Andrew Zobler, founder and CEO, of Sydell Group, continues to lead the NoMad brand with responsibility for design, branding and hotel management while Hilton is leading future development. Over the last decade, Zobler and his team have created seven dynamic lifestyle brands, with award-winning hotel concepts including NoMad, The Line, Freehand and The Ned. Sydell will be responsible for the design, branding and management of the NoMad brand while Hilton will lead all development.

Hilton Introduces New Global Lifestyle President

Hilton also has appointed Kevin Osterhaus as president, global lifestyle brands to steward the growth, design and development of the Canopy by Hilton, Curio Collection by Hilton, Graduate by Hilton, Motto by Hilton, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, and Tempo by Hilton brands.

Osterhaus joins Hilton from Graduate Hotels, where, as president, he oversaw all aspects of global operations and marketing for the company’s portfolio, which includes more than 30 properties across the United States and the United Kingdom. Kevin developed his expertise in creating memorable guest experiences through his extensive background in the hospitality industry marked by leadership roles at Ennismore International, The Hoxton Hotels, SIXTY Hotels, and Standard International. Three more 737 MAX 8s for WestJet

Additional aircraft expected to join WestJet Group operations in 2024, supporting capacity growth plans

The WestJet Group announced it will acquire an additional three Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from BOC Aviation Limited. The three aircraft are expected to integrate into the WestJet Group's fleet and operations in 2024, following the completion of leasing agreements.

"We have an ambitious growth strategy, and the expansion of our fleet is critical to our mission of providing affordable air travel to Canadians," said Mike Scott, WestJet Group, Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer. "Working with a trusted partner like BOC Aviation supports us in meeting our growth expectations for 2024."

While WestJet guests will benefit from the additional capacity across the airline's network, the aircraft will not immediately reflect the interior cabin experience, synonymous with the WestJet Group. Updating and refreshing the interior cabins of the aircraft will be prioritized as part of the airlines' existing fleet reconfiguration plans, to ensure a consistent experience for guests across its operation as soon as possible.
