Gloucestershire Airport cutting air traffic control services this summer....

This summer Gloucestershire Airport will not provide an Air Traffic Control Service (ATC) for 10 days across a 10-week period, the airport confirmed this week. They also warned that on the days when ATC cover is provided, the service will begin 30 minutes later than published and end 30 minutes earlier.

The airport has been forced to make this drastic step because a number of Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) leaving the Airport for new roles elsewhere. In response to this the Airport has already recruited or promoted 5 new ATCOs but the earliest any of them will be fully trained is not in time to prevent these changes to ATC service provision.

Airport Managing Director, Jason Ivey confirms, “This does not mean the Airport is totally shut as operators based here will still be able to take off and land using our indemnity scheme. Additional support on these days is also being investigated.

We’ve spent considerable time consulting those that operate from Gloucestershire Airport and have implemented as many of their suggestions as possible, within the bounds of the Civil Aviation Authority
(CAA) regulations and individual contracts.

The revised opening times in place for July, August and part of September have meant many of our ATC
team have had to cancel leave and change their own family arrangements, for which we are extremely grateful.”

The new Senior Leadership Team (SLT) put in place a full manpower plan for Air Traffic Control several months ago, covering recruitment, training and succession planning to ensure this difficult situation will not happen in future.

This plan included the introduction of the new ATCO pay scales to help with recruitment and retention and the airport has also initiated a £500,000 investment in Air Traffic Control Tower equipment to improve the working environment and service.

Gloucestershire was the busiest General Aviation Airport in the UK last year, and this, plus the variety and complexity of movements makes it an ideal location for ATCOs to get extensive experience in a short space of time and therefore be able to advance their careers.

Chris Brian, Manager, of Air Traffic Services explains; "There is a shortage of Air Traffic Controllers throughout the UK at the moment. This has led to unprecedented demand from larger airfields for more ATCOs and has made it increasingly difficult for airports like ours to recruit new and retain existing staff. Despite our best efforts to counter these challenges we now find ourselves without enough controllers to always provide an ATC service. Having said that, I am extremely proud of the efforts and sacrifices that our ATC staff are making to ensure we do everything possible to support our customers and recover from this situation in the shortest feasible time frame. I could not ask any more of this remarkable team."

Graham Carter, General Manager at Castle Air commented:   "As an operator at Gloucestershire Airport, we at Castle Air Academy appreciate the opportunity to provide a ‘user-based’ perspective on this difficult situation and to have been consulted throughout the decision-making process to support the conclusion that has been reached in terms of ATC opening hours.  The future-proofing of ATC is essential for the growth of our organisation over the next 12 months and it is good to hear that the SLT have a plan in place for this.”

Kerry Evans, Technical Director at RGV agrees; “We’ve had the opportunity to feed in our thoughts and
help shape what is a difficult situation for those that use the airport. The management team have tried to
accommodate all operator's needs and the future plan for ATC sounds as if this won't happen again, after this interim period to train up the new ATCOs.”

Jason Ivey, Managing Director concludes, “We recognise that this situation is extremely regrettable but
would like to thank the operators for their understanding, support, and for the many messages we have
received from those who believe that the new team are doing everything they can to ensure a professional and well-managed aviation hub.”

The new hours come into force on the 8th of July and will be published on the Airport website shortly.

Airbus takes superconductivity research for hydrogen-powered aircraft a step further

Confirmed interest in the potential of superconducting technologies for hydrogen-powered aircraft

Launch of a new demonstrator with a megawatt-class superconducting motor

Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, has launched a new technological demonstrator to accelerate the maturation of superconducting technologies for use in electric propulsion systems of a future hydrogen-powered aircraft.

Known as Cryoprop, the new demonstrator will integrate and mature a two megawatt-class superconducting electric propulsion system cooled by liquid hydrogen via a helium recirculation loop and developed by Airbus teams in Toulouse, France, and Ottobrunn, Germany.

“Our previous demonstrators have shown that superconducting technologies would be a key enabler for the high-power electrification of future hydrogen-powered aircraft. I truly believe that the new demonstrator will lead to performance improvements of the propulsion system, translating into significant weight and fuel saving potential” said Michael Augello, CEO Airbus UpNext.

Airbus has been developing superconducting technologies for high-power electric propulsion for several years, culminating in the power-on of an integrated 500 kW cryogenic propulsion system last year.

Cryoprop will confirm the potential of superconducting technologies for future aircraft applications, assessing all aspects related to safety, industrialisation, maintenance and operations. This demonstrator will also give Airbus the opportunity to develop high-level, in-house expertise and foster a new ecosystem to accelerate the introduction of new products in areas such as superconducting cables, motors, cryogenic power electronics and cryogenic cooling systems.

Aviation Industry gets first fully recyclable aircraft seat cover made from innovative new circular recycled material

Gen Phoenix, a multi-award winning leader in sustainable material innovation, in partnership with Sabeti Wain Aerospace and Doy Design, is proud to announce the launch of the aviation industry's first fully recyclable aircraft dress cover. The Circular Dress Cover is a breakthrough closed-loop solution that allows airlines to recycle 100% of their end-of-life seat covers into new seat cover material with no compromise on quality, durability or certification requirements.

This first-of-its-kind, fully circular cover is upholstered in Helios, a brand-new material innovation developed by Gen Phoenix; made using recycled end-of-life waste in a closed-loop process, that can continue to be recycled again and again. The Circular Dress Cover marks a paradigm shift in aircraft seating sustainability. Current seat covers are traditionally made from a mix of non-recyclable materials that are hard to separate and end up in landfills or incinerated after their typical service life. In contrast, Gen Phoenix's patent-pending technology allows airlines' old seat covers to be fully recycled, in their entirety, and repurposed at the end of their lives through the company's innovative process.

"Airlines are under immense pressure to reduce waste and meet aggressive net-zero emissions targets," says Nico den Ouden, CTO and GM Seating of Gen Phoenix. "Helios, our latest material innovation, provides a revolutionary new circular solution for airlines looking to eliminate a significant waste stream and lower the carbon footprint of aircraft interiors. It's a win for sustainability and a win for airlines."

JetBlue's new Edinburgh - New York service takes off today

New York's hometown airline, JetBlue expands its transatlantic reach today, with the launch of a new service from Edinburgh to New York taking off.  This daily summer-seasonal service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI) will operate through September 30, 2024.

This new service, only the second direct offering from New York’s JFK to Edinburgh,  which is the United Kingdom’s second most popular tourism destination. Flights to Edinburgh will operate daily on JetBlue’s Airbus A321neo with Mint aircraft with 16 redesigned Mint Suite seats, 144 core seats and Airbus’ Enhanced Cabin with XL Bins. The A321neo with Mint features an average 20 percent increase in fuel efficiency and up to 500 nautical miles in additional range.

“JetBlue has redefined transatlantic travel by introducing low fares and great service in markets dominated by high fare legacy carriers,” said Marty St. George, president, JetBlue. “We look forward to connecting Scotland and the Northeast this summer with our award winning Mint and core service that will bring this signature JetBlue experience to Edinburgh."

"Our relationship with the US is a special one. We welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors to Scotland and the wider UK from North America every year and it’s also our top export market. This new direct JetBlue route from Edinburgh to New York City will really help strengthen links between our two great countries,” said John Lamont, UK Government Minister for Scotland. “Just last month, I walked down Sixth Avenue with other representatives from the UK Government as part of the annual Tartan Day celebrations in Manhattan, promoting our most important exports - whisky, energy and financial services, and our rich culture. This flight route will make it easier for visitors from the U.S. to come and see for themselves what a uniquely attractive destination we have here, while also easing travel for Scottish visitors wanting to explore the Big Apple and beyond.”

“I’m delighted to see JetBlue’s new Edinburgh to New York JFK flight take off, as it will help enhance Scotland’s direct connectivity to the US and strengthen important links for business connectivity, exports, and inbound tourism,” said Jim Fairlie, Connectivity Minister. “This is the first time JetBlue has served Scotland and it demonstrates the confidence they have in the Scottish market. It also strengthens Edinburgh Airport’s case for establishing a U.S. pre-clearance border facility to help make travel more seamless and provide added benefits for Scottish businesses and visitors. I wish Edinburgh Airport and JetBlue every success with the new service, and I am sure it will be welcomed by travellers in both Scotland and the US.”

“We are excited to welcome JetBlue to Scotland with the launch of this new direct service. North America is our most valuable international visitor market, and we are seeing record levels of demand here, welcoming almost one million visitors last year, surpassing not only pre-pandemic levels but also other parts of the UK,” said Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland. “We know these visitors are drawn to Scotland for a variety of reasons from our dramatic landscapes to our rich history and culture and warm people, with Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital offering a well-connected gateway for exploring the rest of the country. These visitors who often stay longer and spend more, are hugely important to Scotland’s tourism industry and wider economy supporting businesses, jobs and communities and why making it as easy as possible for people to visit here with direct access is key. Following a difficult few years for the travel and tourism industry, we are delighted to be working with new partner JetBlue to promote this new direct service and encourage more US visitors to choose Scotland for their next holiday.”

“We are excited to see another new airline and tailfin as JetBlue adds Edinburgh Airport to its fast-growing European network. Transatlantic travel from Edinburgh has been a real success story and adding more capacity to New York opens up another route for passengers to travel to and from Scotland and the USA, bringing our two countries even closer together,” said Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport. “It’s always great to see a new airline make its home in Edinburgh and we are really looking forward to welcoming JetBlue’s passengers and our new colleagues to Scotland’s capital.”

Airport lounges are big business..........

The pandemic unleashed consumer craving for amenities to relieve the little miseries that can accompany travel today. Airport lounges have become a hugely popular answer. Today, lounge operators are the beneficiaries of hordes of travellers seeking premium experiences—so much so that overcrowding is a thorny issue, with social media documenting long lines in airport concourses. This is partly because higher fee co-branded credit cards now feature lounge access. Airlines are understandably excited by the revenue stream provided by these upscale sanctuaries, and new lounges are appearing in airports around the world.

April 2024 passenger traffic for Corporación América Airports S.A.

Corporación América Airports S.A.  one of the leading private airport operators in the world, has released its latest figures which show a 4.8% decrease in passenger traffic in April 2024, compared to 2023.

Passenger Traffic Overview

Total passenger traffic declined 4.8% compared to the same month of 2023, or 2.2% when adjusting for the discontinuation of the Natal airport. Domestic passenger traffic was down 13.8% year-over-year (YoY), or 9.9% when excluding Natal, mainly impacted by weaker performances in Argentina and Ecuador. International traffic was up 6.3%, mainly driven by Argentina and Italy and, to a lesser extent, Ecuador and Uruguay.

In Argentina, total passenger traffic declined 5.2% YoY, driven by weaker performance in domestic traffic, which was down 11.0% YoY. Domestic traffic, which last year included incentives from a government program (called 'Previaje') to boost domestic tourism, was also impacted by some flight cancellations and the temporary suspension of a few routes operated by Aerolíneas Argentinas. In addition, Bariloche Airport was closed for four days due to maintenance works. International passenger traffic continued to perform well and increased 9.3% YoY.

In Italy, passenger traffic grew by 12.0% compared to the same month in 2023. International passenger traffic, which accounted for over 80% of the total traffic, increased by 14.1% YoY, with strong performances at both Pisa and Florence airports. Domestic passenger traffic increased by 3.6% YoY, impacted by weaker performance at Pisa Airport, where some pre-pandemic domestic destinations have yet to resume.

In Brazil, total passenger traffic decreased by 13.4% YoY, or by 1.0% YoY when adjusting for the discontinuation of Natal Airport. Domestic traffic, which accounted for almost 60% of the total traffic, was down 24.3% YoY, or 7.8% when excluding Natal, while transit passengers were up 12.0% YoY. Traffic in Brazil remained heavily impacted by financial and aircraft constraints in some of the local airlines. As a reminder, following the friendly termination process concluded in February 2024, CAAP no longer operates Natal Airport, effective February 19, 2024. Therefore, statistics for Natal are available up to February 18, 2024.

Mesa Air Group's latest operational results....

Mesa Air Group has released details of its first quarter fiscal 2024 financial and operating results which show the company had total operating revenues of $118.8 million.  Its pre-tax loss of $57.0 million, is adjusted to net loss of $21.8 million.  Mesa reports that its block hours for the period was 46,658, an approximate 5% increase over the fourth quarter of 2023.

Jonathan Ornstein, Chairman and CEO, said, “While it has been a long road, we have successfully completed the majority of our surplus CRJ asset sales. Over the past 19 months, we have finalized approximately $390 million of CRJ asset sales, which we used to pay down approximately $265 million of debt. We are in discussions with multiple parties to address the remaining surplus assets.

Ornstein continued, “In addition to the progress we have made on debt reduction and the block-hour rate increase we negotiated with United, another significant reason for our optimism moving forward is the substantial reduction in attrition across our work groups, especially pilots. Pilot attrition has improved sequentially over the past several months, and our attrition for May 2024 is less than half of what it was a year ago. Combined with increased monthly pilot training output, we expect to see lower training expenses and better utilization of our fleet, which should lead to improved operational performance and financial results. Additionally, we are pleased to report that our Mesa Pilot Development time-building program achieved profitability in its first year of operations and has already provided Mesa with new-hire first officers. It is currently our intent to source all future new-hire pilots from Mesa Pilot Development.

“For the second fiscal quarter of 2024, we expect to report an adjusted net profit for the first time in ten quarters. We also expect to generate breakeven cash flow for the remainder of the fiscal year. As our business turns the corner, we can focus on longer-term strategic opportunities to enhance shareholder value as well as job security and career advancement for our people.”

Airbus achieves Eurodrone’s Preliminary Design Review

The Eurodrone programme has successfully performed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR). Led by Airbus Defence and Space as prime contractor, this major programme milestone has been completed with OCCAR and representatives of the four customer nations (France, Germany, Italy and Spain) in the presence of the three Major Sub-Contractors (MSC), Airbus Defence and Space Spain, Dassault Aviation and Leonardo.

The PDR proves that the initial design of the aircraft has consistently matured, paving the way to proceed with the detailed design. It is the outcome of different technical assessments and evaluations conducted, such as Wind Tunnel Testing to confirm the aerodynamic configuration of Eurodrone, the overall design to ensure demonstration of operational capability, and the validation of a fully representative Digital Twin. From the very beginning, the Eurodrone programme benefits from both design philosophies – physical and digital.

Supported by and based on the knowledge already gathered, the Eurodrone programme enters into a new phase to reach the Critical Design Review (CDR), which will represent the final step and closure of architecture and system design.

Boeing ecoDemonstrator to continue to test technologies......

The U.S. plane maker, Boeing says it is testing three dozen technologies on its ecoDemonstrator program focused on strengthening operational efficiency and sustainability in cabin interiors, one of the most challenging parts of recycling an aeroplane. The company will begin testing this month using a 777-200ER (Extended Range).

The Boeing ecoDemonstrator projects include:

Airport operations: Testing to enable single-engine taxi and digital taxi clearances to reduce fuel use and enhance safety by reducing pilot workload
Airport noise: Quantifying the benefits of flight operation procedures, like steeper glide slope and continuous descent approach, to reduce community noise, fuel use and emissions
Waste-reducing materials: Lighter, recyclable and more durable floor coverings and recycled carbon fiber ceiling panels – both made with 25% bio-based resin
Noise and weight reduction: Cabin insulation to better reduce noise and regulate humidity and temperature, and fabric-covered acoustic panels for the bulkhead and galley
Future cabin concepts: Economy and business class seats with sensors that detect if someone is seated during taxi, takeoff and landing which can improve safety, and reduce crew workload and downtime for maintenance; a touchless water conservation lavatory; and galley technologies to make cabin service more efficient and reduce food waste

"The Boeing ecoDemonstrator program helps us make tangible improvements to our products – allowing us to reduce the environmental impacts of flying, improve the in-flight experience and strengthen the safety of our aeroplanes," said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We're grateful for the many partnerships within aviation and beyond who help us turn the seemingly impossible into reality."
