Mr Dai Haoyu, Acting Senior Vice President of Marketing Planning, at Singapore Airlines, said: "London has always been a very important market for the Singapore Airlines Group. It also opens up additional travel options to other points in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.”

Mr Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive Officer, London Gatwick, said: “Renowned as one of the world’s best carriers, we are delighted to welcome Singapore Airlines to London Gatwick. It showcases the high regard in which Gatwick is held, and connecting to the impressive Changi Airport is a big boost for the whole region. For passengers across London and the South East, the new route will provide huge connectivity potential, not only to the fantastic destination of Singapore, but more widely across South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. With significant increases in trade between the UK and Singapore in recent years, the service also provides exciting opportunities for local and regional businesses.

Passengers arriving from Singapore will benefit from London Gatwick’s outstanding connections, with our newly redesigned train station providing direct access to the heart of London in less than 30 minutes, alongside services to world-famous cities such as Cambridge and the UK’s beautiful south coast.”

Tickets for SIA’s flights to London’s Gatwick Airport will be progressively made available for sale through the various distribution channels from tomorrow - 19 December 2023.

The announcement has been welcomed by industry professionals and travellers alike,  Kenny McNatty of a Crawley-based financial services company said,  "This is wonderful news, we have offices in both Hong Kong and Singapore,  so this new direct flight will save the trek over to Heathrow and make it so much easier to get to and from the airport."

The airline also recently announced the strengthening of its strategic partnership with Marriott International, which provides members of Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott International’s award-winning travel programme, and KrisFlyer, the SIA Group’s lifestyle rewards programme, with more ways to maximise their benefits.

Eligible members of the two programmes may receive a status match and take advantage of an accelerated pathway to obtain a higher elite status. Massive order for Airbus from Turkish Airlines

Türkiye’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, will expand its fleet with an order for 220 Airbus aircraft, made up of 150 Airbus’ best selling A321s and 70 of the world’s most modern and efficient A350 widebody aircraft (50 A350-900s, 15 A350-1000s and 5 A350F freighters). This follows two orders from the airline for 10 A350-900s in September and four A350-900s in July 2023. This latest order will take Turkish Airlines’ total orderbook for Airbus aircraft to 504, of which 212 are already delivered.

“On the new order, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat stated: “This landmark order is more than an expansion; it’s a testament to our dedication to innovation, operational excellence, and a sustainable future. The addition of these advanced Airbus aircraft to our fleet will not only enhance our operational capabilities but also significantly contribute to our environmental goals. This investment is a crucial milestone in the further evolution of Türkiye’s aviation industry. By modernising our fleet with more efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft, we are reinforcing our leading position in global aviation and contributing to the nation’s prominence as an aviation hub.”

"This order for the latest generation aircraft is a demonstration of the bold vision by Turkish Airlines. The A350-900, A350-1000, A350F and A321 will all be flagship aircraft in their respective category and efficiency drivers to shape the airline’s future and sustainable expansion, with more range, less fuel, noise and emissions and best cabin in class," says Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International. “The opening into the A350-1000 and the A350F highlights the cross-model value of the A350 family and reinforces our long-lasting partnership with Turkish Airlines and Türkiye’s aviation sector. We are proud to accompany Türkiye's connection to the world with our state-of-the-art aircraft."

The A321neo is the largest aircraft in Airbus’ A320neo Family, offering unparalleled range and performance. By incorporating new generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo brings a 50% noise reduction and more than 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft. Having the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky, the aircraft is the perfect contender for maximising comfort.

To date over 5,600 A321neos have been ordered by more than 100 customers across the globe.

Qantas takes delivery of its first A220 to replace Boeing 717 jets

Australia’s national carrier has taken delivery of its first new generation A220, becoming the 20th operator of the type. The aircraft is the first of 29 A220s ordered by the Qantas Group for operation by QantasLink, their regional airline that services metropolitan and regional destinations across Australia.

Featuring a unique livery based on an Aboriginal artwork, the aircraft will depart the Airbus final assembly line in Mirabel in the coming days for a delivery flight to Sydney, with stops in Vancouver, Honolulu and Nadi.

The A220 will gradually replace the existing 717 fleet at QantasLink. Flying twice as far, the A220 can connect any two points across Australia non-stop, while also bringing a significant 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft.
Qantas 717 being replaced

The A220 also has the largest cabin, seats and windows in its class, offering passengers superior comfort. With a total of 137 seats, Qantas’ A220s will be configured in a two class layout seating 10 passengers in business and 127 in economy.

Specifically designed for the 100-150 seat segment, the A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category. Powered by the latest generation Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines, it can fly up to 3,450 nautical miles or 6,390 kilometres non-stop.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with 100% SAF by 2030.

Airbus has received close to 850 orders from 30 customers for the A220, of which over 300 have been delivered worldwide.

Azul Linhas Aéreas confirms incremental order for four A330neos

Azul discloses a firm order for four additional A330-900 from a purchase agreement signed in June 2023. With these aircraft, the airline will expand its fleet and international route offering.

“We are proud to announce this order, as it confirms Azul as the airline with the most fuel- efficient fleet in the region, with over 80% of our capacity coming from next-generation aircraft. With the five A330neos we currently operate and the seven we now have on order, we will standardize our international fleet, allowing us to further enhance Azul’s renowned customer experience and on-time performance,” said Alexandre Malfitani, Azul’s Chief Financial Officer.

“Azul’s re-confirmed confidence in the A330neo underscores once again, that the A330neo's economics and performance are making a true difference in Azul’s widebody strategy, coming out on top of the competition," says Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International. "While Azul will leverage the full potential of Airbus' unique commonality between its A330 and A320 Family fleets, passengers can rave about a spacious, best-in-class cabin experience - and this on every long-haul flight the airline offers on its attractive, globally growing network.”

BARIG Welcomes Düsseldorf Airport as New Partner

Intensive exchange for improved processes
Jointly prepared for the UEFA European Football Championship 2024 in Germany

“Air traffic can only perform well if infrastructure and processes are constantly optimized. Airport operations in particular play an essential role in this regard,” Michael Hoppe, BARIG Chairman and Executive Director, states. “There are many complex interfaces between airport operators and airlines where other players are involved as well, for example in ground operations, aviation security, or sustainability. A good, constructive exchange can contribute to further improvements here, and passengers as well as air cargo customers will benefit from this.”

At the last BARIG Full Board meeting in Frankfurt am Main on December 13, 2023, representatives of Düsseldorf Airport and the airlines discussed preparations for next year, particularly with regard to upcoming major events in 2024.

Diverse Egypt: An award-winning and safe travel destination with many new offers

The country, recognised by the Lonely Planet as the destination with the best value for money, is expecting a record number of visitors in 2023. To continue this trend next year, further openings of new historic sites and resorts are planned.

-Unforgettable adventures, exciting experiences, and warm sunshine: the award-winning holiday hotspot of Egypt offers something for all travellers this winter. While the winter chill is setting in and the world is eagerly looking forward to the holiday season, the country on the Nile is proving to be a fascinating and affordable destination for a winter holiday in the sun.

Unique Experiences and Adventures

In a time when travel is not just about the destination but the experiences that come with it, the land of pharaohs, pyramids, and the lush River Nile delta stands tall as a destination worth exploring, whether travellers are seeking immersive urban experiences in Cairo and Alexandria, personalised river cruises, unique desert adventures or some of the world’s best snorkelling and scuba diving sites in the Red Sea.

"Tourism has changed in recent years. More and more travellers are coming to Egypt because the country offers them diverse and unique experiences and they feel safe here. Our endeavour is to offer every guest a trip that allows them to relax and unwind as well as get to know our rich culture," says Ahmed Issa, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. "Last year we saw an influx of visitors during the cold months, and we expect millions of travellers to come again this year to escape the winter."

Significant Investments in Popular Tourist Spots

Significant investments have been made in Egyptian destinations, including restoring and developing archaeological sites and opening new museums and hotels. Highlights include the Graeco-Roman Museum reopening in Alexandria, the restoration of the Great Hypostyle Hall in the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings, and the new Grand Egyptian Museum opening in early 2024 near Cairo.

Sustainability Is Becoming Increasingly Important

With an increasing focus on sustainability, Egypt offers plenty of opportunities for those looking for eco-friendly ways to connect with nature, cultural and historical heritage and people. For example, many tour operators offer packages that include stays in eco-friendly accommodation and support local businesses. The country is also home to a number of eco-lodges, including Eco Nubia on the once-deserted island of Bigeh, which has become an internationally renowned attraction and recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.

That's not all, as destinations such as Cairo and various resorts along the Red Sea coast between El Gouna and Marsa Alam are also involved in environmental certification programmes. Sharm el-Sheikh was even recently recognised as the best sustainable tourist city by the Arab Union for Tourism Media (AUTM).

A Record Year for Tourism

According to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, more than seven million tourists visited Egypt during the first half of 2023. The country, which features as a Best Value Destination on the newly released Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2024 list, is on target to attract 15 million tourists this year. Another important reason for this: even in times like these, Egypt is known as one of the safest travel destinations in the world.

United Raises Miles for Make-A-Wish This Holiday Season

This giving season, United is encouraging its customers to donate miles to Make-A-Wish America to support efforts to grant life-changing wishes for children who are battling critical illnesses. According to Make-A-Wish, more than 70 percent of wishes require some form of travel. Every donated United Airlines mile, which never expires, helps children and their families fly across the country to participate in transformative experiences.

More than 70 percent of wishes require some form of travel – United customers have already donated more than 2.3 million miles in December

Airline will match the first 2.5 million miles raised for Make-A-Wish America through Miles on a Mission, United's leading fundraising and crowdsourcing program

During the month of December, United will match the first 2.5 million miles raised for Make-A-Wish America through Miles on a Mission, United's leading fundraising and crowdsourcing program, giving flyers a chance to use their miles for good. So far, more than 2.3 million miles have been donated to Make-A-Wish by MileagePlus members this month.

"We are thrilled to be featured by United's Miles on a Mission program, which will allow us to continue to give wish families a chance to make lasting memories away from hospital rooms," says Leslie Motter, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America. "Make-A-Wish needs almost 3 billion airline miles to fulfill travel wishes for children battling critical illnesses each year, making it a critical resource to grant the wish of every eligible child waiting."

Make-A-Wish supporters, and its extensive network of over 24,000 volunteers across the U.S. and its territories, help Make-A-Wish grant thousands of wishes each year. When these wishes come true, it creates strength, hope and transformation in a child, giving them the tools they need to fight against and eventually overcome a critical illness.

When you donate, you can give wish kids hope for today – and tomorrow. Meet wish kid Lindsey, who shared that since the start of her cancer treatment, she had her heart set on going to Hawaii. After 3 long years filled with 16 rounds of chemotherapy, 17 surgeries, and many more bumps in the road, Lindsey and her family were thrilled to be passengers on a recent United Flight to her wish destination. "This trip signifies the beginning of a healthy life. One where the hospital is far away. One where I'm a normal student, enjoying all that college has to offer," said Lindsey. "To the amazing flight crew, thank you for your kindness and for making the beginning of my wish so special. Thank you for all that you do."

Since 1986, United Airlines has helped Make-A-Wish grant life-changing travel wishes – experiences that help wish kids and their families replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy, and anxiety with hope.

"Air travel can be a big expense for an organization like Make-A-Wish and these miles can help them focus even more of their resources on creating amazing experiences for children in need," said Helon Hammond, VP of Global Learning, People & Community Impact for United. "Our customers have raised more than 20 million miles over the past five years alone, and we're honoured to feature this longstanding partnership again this holiday season."

The Tainan City Museum Opens on Dec. 22, Showcasing the Collective Record of Taiwan's Cultural Transformation as an Ancient Capital

The Tainan City Museum is set to open on Dec. 22. If you're familiar with or have visited the National Palace Museum, this museum, named after “Tainan,” is a must-visit. The Tainan City Museum houses a diverse collection of invaluable artifacts spanning from prehistoric to modern times. These treasures unfold stories of the interactions between the Dutch and indigenous people, depict how pirates once dominated the southeastern coast of China, showcase how the Qing Empire extended its rule to Taiwan, and delve into the transformative changes brought by the arrival of the Japanese to Taiwan, among other stories. This museum will tell captivating tales of artifacts and unveil numerous unheard stories of this city through different means.

Director-general of the Tainan City Cultural Affairs Bureau Hsieh Shih-yuan introduced that during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912 A.D.), Tainan was where the Taiwan Prefecture was located. The museum showcases Taiwan’s most extensive array of locally found artefacts dating back to the Qing Dynasty, ranging from the official clothing worn by local officials to the tools used in daily religious ceremonies and weddings. The collection also includes historical records detailing how officials and civilians joined hands to combat bandits. Yet, history is a collective narrative shaped by all who have inhabited this land. As reflected in the opening permanent exhibition "Creating Tainan: Our History" and a special Life Story Series exhibition titled "Traditional Grocery Stores," Tainan witnessed the arrival of diverse groups of people, leading to the convergence of varied cultures. This collision ignites cultural exchanges and accumulations that fundamentally shape Tainan's society, serving as vital nourishment for its role as Taiwan's cultural capital.

Situated in southern Taiwan, Tainan is approximately 90 minutes away from Taipei by the high-speed rail. It stands as one of Taiwan's oldest cities and is revered as the nation’s cultural capital. In addition to its rich cultural and religious heritage sites, Tainan is also celebrated for its cuisine. For instance, one of Tainan's must-try dishes is milkfish, which represents Tainan's centuries-long evolution. It's commonly viewed as the epitome of Tainan’s history and continues to be an indispensable element in the daily lives of many locals even today.

ACI World and Cirium Partner on Landmark Data Collaboration to Strengthen World’s Leading Airport Service Quality Program

Partnership solidifies ACI World’s commitment to the accuracy and reliability of customer experience data.

Airports Council International (ACI) World and Cirium, a global leader in aviation data analytics, begin a landmark collaboration to strengthen the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) program—the world’s leading airport customer experience measurement and benchmarking program.

The ASQ program's methodology is renowned for its robustness, ensuring the most accurate representation of airport traffic. In recognizing the critical role that flight databases play in the assessment of respondent sampling, Cirium will serve as the reference database for flights supporting the ASQ methodology—solidifying the ASQ program’s commitment to accuracy and reliability. Cirium’s core platform provides details on more than 35 million flights per year and covers 97% of scheduled flights worldwide.

Compared to other programs in the aviation industry, the ASQ program is based on live research via surveys gathered at the airport—direct from the traveller—rating their satisfaction on the day of travel. It serves as the basis for the annual ASQ Awards which recognize the best airports for customer experience worldwide, as selected by passengers.
