“Major action needed” says Royal Aeronautical Society - new report on discrimination and lack of diversity in airline training

A major report launched today shines a light on the significant problem of gender discrimination and the lack of gender diversity amongst pilots in the airline industry with a specific focus on the airline pilot trainer role.

The joint report by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) considered survey responses from more than 700 airline pilots worldwide, 750 personal testimonials and eight hours of focus groups.

The study aimed to investigate why so few pilot trainers are female and explore the barriers to female pilot career progression.

While women make up only 5.26% of the global pilot workforce, the numbers of female pilot trainers are even worse. For example, in the UK just 0.9% of Type Rating Examiners (TREs), a type of airline trainer, are women (CAA, 2022).

Among the report’s major findings were some extremely concerning reports of overt and covert sexism and sexual harassment towards women, including frequent reports of an “old boys’ network” and a lack of female role models and mentors.

Structural barriers identified include: a lack of transparency around recruitment and selection; and the vast majority of airlines and training organisations refusing to allow pilot trainers to work part-time, which has a disproportionate effect on women.

In addition, 42% of women in the survey reported that they had been treated differently at work and 30% that they had been discriminated against, due to their gender.

Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) grounds the rest of Qatar Airways A350s

In the ongoing dispute with Airbus, the Doha based Qatar Airways has grounded the rest of its A350 planes after putting on heavy political and financial pressure on the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA).  The QCAA has now revoked the Airworthiness Review Certificate of all Qatar Airways A350 aircraft, so far 22 of the planes on the ground.

According to Qatar Airways, the decision was made independently by the regulator "as all of these aircraft have developed damage as a result of the A350 Accelerated Surface Degradation Condition which is beyond the tolerance limits set by Airbus. The QCAA will not allow these aircraft to return to service until a full and conclusive root cause analysis has been completed, the impact on continuing airworthiness has been established and a solution has been found to permanently correct the root cause and repair the damage.

The battle continues with various legal actions being taken by both Airbus and Qatar Airways with high court cases and injunctions.

Kano and Port Harcourt two new Nigerian destinations for Qatar Airways.

Doha based
Qatar Airways has launched services to two new destinations in Nigera to enchance its African offering. The airline now operates four flights a week to Kano (KAN) and three flights a week to Port Harcourt (PHC) with both operating via the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

Qatar Airways will operate to Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (KAN) in one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, and the gateway to Kano’s rich historical treasures that have survived millennia. Meanwhile, Port Harcourt, the largest city and capital of Rivers State, Nigeria will be served via Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC) a diverse and fast-moving city on the southern tip of Nigeria. More than a century of international trade has turned this former port town into a vibrant, fast-growing metropolis. The aircrafts were greeted in Kano and Port Harcourt by traditional water cannon salutes upon their historic arrival.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, said: “This is a defining moment for Qatar Airways, with Nigeria becoming our most connected market in Africa with the launch of our new services to Kano and Port Harcourt. We see tremendous opportunity in the region and these new routes are an important catalyst to further boost trade and commerce in the country. Our presence in Nigeria now covers four key markets and is a real affirmation of our support to the country. Qatar Airways has stayed steadfast in its commitment to Africa throughout the pandemic, operating continuously and reliably to Nigeria. We have since increased frequencies and grown our network, considerably, improving connectivity to and from the continent and providing travellers with more choice and convenience.”

In Nigeria, the airline offers double-daily flights to Lagos and now operates daily services to Abuja. The two new routes, (Kano & Port Harcourt), bring the number of flights Qatar Airways operates between Africa and Doha to 188 weekly flights serving 28 destinations across the continent.

Minister of Aviation, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hon. Sen. Hadi Sirika, said: “The new flights provide important travel and trade links between Nigeria and the world.  As the largest economy in Africa, this enhanced global connectivity via the new Qatar Airways service will provide a vital network to move goods and people, as we recover from challenges of the pandemic and prioritise growth. Kano and Port Harcourt are both important to this recovery. This new service also reinforces the close ties between Nigeria and Qatar, and it paves the way to explore new, untapped opportunities.”

Civil airports attacked as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues.

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, Emmanuel Macron, the French President,  held new telephone talks today with Russian President Vladimir Putin.  This call was the fourth time they had spoken since the invasion started and was shorter than their last call, lasting approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

Emmanuel Macron is keen to have a positive result in talks with Putin as France’s youngest leader since Napoleon seeks reelection. Yet, this is looking increasingly unlikely because as days pass the French leader is facing increased internal pressures not to appease Putin in the way he has in negotiations thus far conducted.

Earlier in the day, Putin had talks with the Turkish President, Tayyip Erdogan, who, according to media reports appealed for a ceasefire in the conflict. Putin told the Turkish leader he would only halt the Russian military operations if Ukraine stopped fighting and the Russian demands were met,. According to the Kremlin, Putin claimed the operation was going according to plan and was on schedule. The statement also stated that Putin hoped Ukrainian negotiators would take a more constructive approach at talks and take into account the reality on the ground. Turkey currently has rejected applying any economic or trade sanctions on Russia, saying it believes these are counterproductive.  Whilst it has supplied drones to Ukraine, it is still continuing other products to Russia as it maintains its current political stance.

The civilian airport at Vinnytsia airport has been destroyed by Russian forces, confirmed by the local authorities. According to Chatham House head of research, Orysia Lutsevych, Putin has done this to stop humanitarian supplies being flown into the country.

Earlier in the conflict, the civilian airport at Mariupol was attacked and destroyed by the Russian forces which prevented humanitarian evacuation flights from taking place. Elsewhere, joint military and civilian airports have been attacked, such as Gostomel Airport, which appeared to be attacked by Russian helicopter gunships.

According to German reports, the US is working on a possible deal with Poland, to supply them with more aircraft, if the Polish supply the Ukrainian air force with Russian made MIG fighter jets, which its pilots are trained to fly.

Discover Sustainable Travel in Shikoku

Shikoku pilgrimage, Kagawa prefecture. Photo Kagawa Official Tourism Website

The island of Shikoku was ranked sixth in the Top 10 Regions category in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2022 lists. Japan’s fourth-largest island, Shikoku lies southwest of Japan’s main island of Honshu, and is reachable by plane in under two hours from Tokyo. It consists of four prefectures: Kagawa, Ehime, Kochi and Tokushima. In addition to the attractions Shikoku is best known for—the remote Iya Valley and the ancient pilgrimage route—Lonely Planet's selection also acknowledged destinations that have made efforts to promote sustainable tourism.

Shikoku is home to a pilgrimage route taking in 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kukai, who lived over 1,200 years ago. It is one of the world’s longest circular pilgrimage routes, covering 1,400 km across Shikoku’s four prefectures. There are many environmentally-friendly ways to enjoy the trail; visitors can walk, cycle, or take public transportation. Walking the entire course takes around 40 days, but those with less time can still experience the pilgrimage by taking the recommended two-day model tour in Tokushima prefecture. This walking course covers the first nine of the 88 temples, beginning at Ryozenji Temple.

Travellers can also hop on a bike to explore nearby areas in Tokushima. Surrounded by lush forests, Kamikatsu town is one of the least populated municipalities in Shikoku, but it has received much attention in recent years for its environmental strategies. In 2003, Kamikatsu became the first municipality in Japan to issue a zero-waste declaration. Households must separate their garbage into as many as 45 different categories before taking them to the Kamikatsu Zero Waste Centre. Inside this multi-functional complex, there is a quaint and eco-friendly hotel called “HOTEL WHY” where guests can experience a local lifestyle embodying the concept of sustainable living. In order to reduce the amount of plastic waste, the hotel provides no disposable amenities, and guests are asked to cut just the soap they need from a soap bar at check-in. During their stay, they are required to sort their trash into six baskets in their rooms; they take this to a communal facility for recycling when checking out.

As this is Japan, the country is known for its advanced public transportation system, local train and bus routes criss-cross Shikoku, and certain trains and buses will allow passengers to board with bicycles. In Ehime prefecture, for example, there are “cycle trains” on sections of the Iyotetsu line that allow passengers to ride with their bikes. There are also special “cycle buses” with bike racks. Rental bicycle services can also be found at train stations as well as near many hotels.

At the end of 2021, two fuel cell buses started operating in Tokushima prefecture, between Tokushima station and the airport, and between other major sites within Tokushima city. Powered by clean, renewable hydrogen, these buses take travellers on a sustainable ride into the future.

From learning about history by walking pilgrimage routes to taking a bike ride to explore unique rural towns and utilizing different forms of public transportation, a rich variety of experiences awaits travellers in Shikoku – and all can be enjoyed while showing consideration to the environment!

Visitor numbers to Japan from the UK are showing slight signs of improvement over last year, because of the travel restrictions, however, they are still over 97% lower than they were in pre-pademic times.  In January 2019, Japan welcomes 21,554 500 visitors from the UK, in January of this year, just 500 travellers from the UK went to Japan to visit.

Standing with Ukraine – A message from Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet CEO

The head of Canada's leading independent airline,
WestJet has issued a very special message regarding the airline's stance on its support for Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion.

Over the past week, I, along with the rest of the world, have been devastated to witness the deplorable invasion of Ukraine. In many ways, these events are hard to fathom, as a war for territory is incredibly reminiscent of the 19th and 20th century which brought with it haunting consequences that taught us unforgettable and undeniable lessons. No such thing as a war for territory shall ever take place again. What is happening in Europe right now is making me sad and disappointed and I pray for those that are dying, being injured, being displaced, and are suffering in any other way from this assault.

Canada is home to 1.4 million Canadians of Ukrainian ancestry who helped build this country and I believe it is our responsibility to take action. That is why, the WestJet Group will be joining many commendable business leaders, governments, and citizens around the world in their support for Ukraine and their citizens.

We will be donating $25,000 split between the Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal and the Canadian Ukrainian Foundation. We are also encouraging our employees to consider donating to one of these agencies or a vetted agency of their choice to provide direct humanitarian support to Ukraine. I myself have made a significant donation just now.

WestJet has also provided flight vouchers to Canadian humanitarian workers travelling to London, UK, to assist them in getting one step closer to helping those refugees fleeing Ukraine.

Aeroflot to axe all international flights from 8th March

The Russian airline Aeroflot will halt all scheduled international flying from next week, with the exception of flights to Belarus the airline confirmed today.
The Russian aviation agency Rosaviatsiya issued a recommendation that all Russian airlines with foreign-leased planes should suspend passenger and cargo international flights as those aircraft could be impounded following sanctions being applied.

Rosaviatsiya's comments don't apply to those Russian air carriers that operate flights with Russian aircraft, or fully Russian owned planes.

Aeroflot says passengers of international flights holding one-way tickets with departure from Russia will be admitted for carriage until the moment of flights suspension. Passengers of cancelled international flights are eligible for a full refund of tickets.

The airline is also operating a small number of international passenger repatriation flights, including today from Havana, Cuba today and Punta Cana tomorrow.

Earlier this week, Russia's largest private airline S7, said it will be stopping its international operations with effect this weekend.

Every kilo counts.......Save money and environment

An aircraft fuselage is wet from accumulated and trapped moisture due to fuselage condensation - causing excess weight - resulting in higher fuel consumption and more than required emissions of greenhouse gases.

Standard-fitted solutions rely on passive means only; designed to lead condensate water to the belly and then to drain on ground. Passive means are not efficient enough to curb moisture issues in today’s operational environment with more seats and higher load-factors - shorter turnarounds and longer flights.

The CTT Anti-Condensation system is the only measure that tackles the root-cause of fuselage condensation. Several airlines have in dedicated trials already after 2 - 3 months of moisture protected operations recorded a weight loss of 200 - 300 kg in narrowbodies, reducing block fuel burn with 0.4 - 0.6 % and cutting CO2 emissions with 65 - 95mt per year. Another airline proven benefit is a documented 40% reduction of unscheduled electrical component changes per 1,000 flight hours. Non-condensing aeroplanes are always lighter and more sustainable with less moisture issues. The CTT Anti-Condensation system is a green technology that makes flying a little more sustainable!

Norwegian's passenger numbers in February has remained stable over the second month of the year. 640,000 passengers

640,000 passengers flew with

Norwegian in February

Norwegian's traffic figures for February show that the number of passengers has remained stable over the second month of the year. 640,000 passengers flew with the company and the load factor was over 81 percent. In February, ticket sales reached the highest level since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020.

In February, Norway and many European countries removed entry rules and other measures and restrictions associated with the pandemic.

“February is traditionally a month with lower travel demand, however, figures have remained comparable to the month of January. We are particularly pleased that our aircraft have had a load factor of over 81 percent. When travel restrictions were lifted, we immediately noticed an increased demand for flights. We will have a comprehensive summer program this year to meet this demand,” said Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

Norwegian carried 643,089 passengers in February, compared with 61,374 in February 2021. The load factor was 81.3 per cent. The capacity (ASK) was 1,089 million seat kilometres, while actual passenger traffic (RPK) was 885 million seat kilometres. In February, Norwegian had an average of 44 aircraft in operation, and 99.8 per cent of scheduled flights were operated. Punctuality was 87.8 percent.

During the summer program, 280 routes to 38 destinations are planned, and Norwegian will have around 70 aircraft in operation. The company has noted a very positive development in future bookings over the last period, and monitors closely the uncertain situation in Europe, the turmoil in the financial markets and the change in oil prices.

Skip the Line and Check a Bag in a Minute or Less

United Debuts New 'Bag Drop Shortcut' Service

United introduces bag drop shortcut, a new, simple way for customers to skip the line, check their bag in a minute or less on average, and get to their flight. According to recent customer surveys, the bag check process can be one of the more stressful and time-consuming parts of the travel experience and United is the first airline to streamline the process in this way.

Here's how the bag drop shortcut works:

  • Check-in on the United app and select the number of bags
  • Find the bag drop shortcut location at the airport with detailed instructions available right in the app
  • At the bag drop shortcut location, customers place their bag on the scale and scan their boarding pass at the kiosk
  • The United team will check the customer's ID, apply the bag tag and they're on their way!

This free service is available now at all of United's U.S. hubs in Chicago, New York/Newark, Washington D.C., Houston, Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco and the airline plans to expand bag drop shortcut to dozens more new airports this year.

"Our initial customer data proves this free, simple-to-use process saves our customers time and energy as they get ready for their flight," said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United, "We're thrilled to be the first to offer this service to all customers who check-in on our award-winning mobile app."

Free service is live now in Chicago, New York/Newark, Washington D.C., Houston, Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with plans to expand to dozens more airports this year

United continues to reward its app users with exclusive experiences, such as bag drop short cut. Originally tested in New York/Newark in August 2021, bag drop shortcut was instantly popular with customers. In less than six months, bag drop shortcut moved from a proof-of-concept to a fully functional service in all seven of United's hubs. By creating a dedicated area for those who only need to drop their bags, United is able to reduce wait times for all customers, which has significantly increased the airline's customer satisfaction scores.

Bag drop shortcut is the latest way the United app is making travel easier, just as millions of customers across the U.S. are gearing up for Spring Break travel. United also helps customers bypass lines with its exclusive Agent on Demand service, where travellers can easily connect with a live customer service agent directly from their mobile devices. United's mobile app and website also provides customers with a step-by-step guide on what tests or documents are needed to travel anywhere in the world, and helps customers find testing locations, schedule appointments, upload tests and vaccine cards if necessary, all within the app.

Avelo Airlines Partners with Aero HygenX to deploy autonomous ultraviolet disinfection robots to combat COVID-19

Avelo Airlines, America's newest airline, this week announced an innovative partnership with Ottawa-based Aero HygenX to deploy leading-edge autonomous ultraviolet light (UVC) robots to disinfect its aircraft fleet to combat COVID-19. Aero HygenX is the pioneer in autonomous UVC disinfection technology for the transportation industry.

The Aero HygenX RAY robot is a compact, lightweight, and autonomous device which uses motion-sensing technology to navigate interior spaces — disinfecting surfaces quickly and safely using UVC light. RAY is a sustainable alternative to harmful chemicals which can damage aircraft interiors, and is emissions-free.

Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said, “We are excited to be on the leading edge of helping prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses among the flying public. The safety and wellbeing of our Customers and Crewmembers is our top priority. Our partnership with Aero HygenX bolsters this commitment with the use of their innovative disinfection technology on our aircraft and at our bases. RAY is a safer, faster, more cost-effective and more sustainable solution than the conventional chemical-based manual disinfection process used by most other airlines.”

Avelo uses the RAY robots as part of its daily disinfection of its six Boeing Next-Generation (NG) 737 aircraft. Additionally, RAY is used to disinfect Avelo’s Crewmember (employee) workspaces at the airline’s West Coast base at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and its East Coast base at Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN). The aircraft and airport disinfection routine occurs every evening following the completion of each day’s flight operations.

Aero HygenX CEO Arash Mahin added, “We couldn’t be more excited to announce that America’s newest airline is using RAY. Avelo’s partnership with Aero HygenX will enhance its aircraft and airport disinfection regiment, and exemplifies the airline’s commitment to safety, reliability and innovation. We look forward to growing with Avelo as they add aircraft, bases, Customers and Crewmembers in the future.”

A Game-Changing Solution

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, airlines around the world have implemented enhanced cleaning procedures involving more frequent and deeper disinfection of aircraft. In most cases, these more stringent hygienic measures have necessitated the manual application of harsh chemical disinfectants and have prolonged the sanitization process. Additional disadvantages of chemical-based disinfection include the creation of surplus hazardous waste and the degradation of aircraft interior finishes.

Finnair to furlough up to 650 staff a month due to Russian airspace closure

The Helsinki based national flag carrier of Finland, Finnair has announced that it is starting consultations with staff for 90-day furloughs as a direct result in  Russian airspace closure.

Just a day or so after the airline assured staff, partners and the media it had enough money in its reserves to cope with the no-fly zone instigated by Russian authorities it made the shock announcement.  The airline says the negotiations concern all 2800 pilots and cabin up to 90 days. It estimates that between 90 and 200 pilots would need to be furloughed each month, whereas between 150 to 450 cabin crew would be laid off. The furloughs would start from the beginning of next month, but this was subject to change and alteration.

Finnair currently flies to Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Delhi and as of March 9 to Tokyo, avoiding Russian airspace, and is currently evaluating possibilities to operate a part of its flights to Korea, and China with an alternative routing.

”With Russian airspace closed, there will be fewer flights by Finnair, and unfortunately less work available for our employees”, says Jaakko Schildt, Chief Operations Officer, Finnair. ”A large share of our staff has been on long furloughs during the pandemic, so the need for further furloughs feels especially harsh, and we are sorry for this.”

France and Spain launch Airbus Tiger MkIII attack helicopter upgrade programme.

OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation), on behalf of the French and Spanish Armament General Directorate, the DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) and the DGAM (Dirección General de Armamento y Material) has awarded a contract to Airbus Helicopters for the development, production, and initial in-service support of the Tiger MkIII attack helicopter upgrade programme.

The contract includes the upgrade of 42 aircraft for France (with the possibility to add another 25 helicopters) and 18 for Spain. In addition, the contract provides the possibility for Germany to later join the Tiger MkIII programme. The first prototype is scheduled for an inaugural flight in 2025. The first delivery to the French Armament General Directorate (DGA) will take place in late 2029 followed by the first delivery to Spain in 2030. Development and upgrade work will be conducted in Airbus Helicopters facilities in Albacete (Spain), Marignane (France) and Donauwörth (Germany).

“The Tiger MkIII programme will provide a European answer to the need for a state-of-the-art attack helicopter for the decades to come. With this upgrade, the Tiger will remain an essential and modern asset to its armies and reinforce defence cooperation in Europe,” said Bruno Even, Airbus Helicopters CEO. He added: “The Tiger MkIII will have no equivalent in the world for high-intensity operations and will further improve the connectivity, precision, and firepower capabilities of the current Tiger”.

Tiger MkIII is a comprehensive upgrade of the European attack helicopter’s systems. Proven in combat, the Tiger is difficult to detect, highly agile, and highly survivable, something operators will continue to benefit from with the MkIII upgrade. The new standard will allow the platform to be connected to the digital battlefield in order to perform manned-unmanned teaming as well as share tactical information in real time. It will also provide an unrivalled range of weapons (turret gun, laser-guided rockets and missiles) and renewed detection and targeting capabilities. The integration of state-of-the-art avionics will reduce the crew’s workload and enable them to be fully focused on mission execution.

The Tiger MkIII standard configuration will include the integration of the Safran Strix NG sights, the Thales FlytX avionics suite, the Topowl DD helmet-mounted sight display, an Indra IFF upgrade, Thales GNSS, and Safran’s inertial navigation system. The communication suite will be upgraded with Thales’ Contact/Synaps radio and data links dedicated to manned/unmanned teaming. Moreover, for Spain Link16 and SATCOM functionalities will be included. The Spanish Tiger MkIII will be equipped with a battlefield management system and countermeasures provided by Indra, whereas the French Tiger MkIII will be equipped with a battlefield management system by ATOS and countermeasures provided by Thales. The new weapon package for France will include the MBDA MAST-F (Future Tactical Air-to-Surface Missile) and Mistral 3 air-to-air missile. For Spain, new capabilities will include 70mm guided rockets and a new air to ground missile.

Airbus Helicopters is fully committed to supporting the Tiger fleet. In 2019, a tri-lateral Global Support Contract was signed with OCCAR. It aimed at boosting the availability rate of the Tigers in service in the French, German, and Spanish Armies. Thanks to this contract, the availability rate for the French Army Tiger fleet has been significantly progressing over the past couple of years. Further positive results are expected in the coming months in Spain, Germany and France.

WestJet to buy Sunwing.....

WestJet and Sunwing announced that they have reached a definitive agreement under which the WestJet Group of companies will acquire Sunwing Vacations and Sunwing Airlines. The transaction will bring together two distinctly Canadian travel and tourism success stories to deliver new travel options and greater value for travellers in the rapidly expanding leisure and work-from-anywhere travel markets. The combination will enable both companies to protect and create jobs and rebuild strength in the Canadian travel industry at a critical time.

Following the close of the transaction, a new tour operating business unit will be created under the WestJet Group, to include both Sunwing Vacations and WestJet Vacations Inc., and will be led by Sunwing CEO Stephen Hunter. Sunwing's current shareholders will become equity holders in the WestJet Group.

Canadian travellers will have access to more competitive airfares and affordable vacation packages through the combined strength of the companies. The tour operator business will be headquartered in Toronto, with a Quebec head office in Laval and the business will continue to market the Sunwing brand alongside WestJet Vacations. The WestJet Group will maintain its head office in Calgary.

The WestJet Group of companies will expand to include Sunwing Airlines. This will add increased capacity, dedicating otherwise seasonal aircraft to operate year-round in Canada, instead of Sunwing supplementing seasonal demand with imported aircraft, which translates into more jobs for Canadians. This acquisition will improve the WestJet Group's ability to offer more affordable fares by immediately expanding its low-cost footprint in Canada.
