PLAY to head to Orlando from 30th September.

Icelandic budget carrier PLAY will start a service to Orlando, Florida on 30 September, with tickets on sale now. The airline will operate the route three times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with the return departing Orlando International Airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Orlando will be PLAY´s fourth destination in the U.S. The other three destinations are Boston, Baltimore/Washington DC and New York, all starting in Spring/Summer 2022.

PLAY will be adding Airbus A321neo Long Range (LR) aircraft to its fleet, making it possible to operate flights to Orlando. PLAY uses the standard model of the Airbus A321neo, but the Airbus A321neo LR is the same aircraft with more fuel capacity and, therefore, capable of flying further than PLAY’s existing Airbus A321s.

“With the Airbus A321neo LR, we can reach markets that were not open to PLAY before. We use the newest generation of A320/1neo from Airbus, which is the most sought-after aircraft in the world today because of its benefits and the Long Range-version is a welcome addition,” says Birgir Jónsson, CEO of PLAY.

“I am convinced that our arrival in Orlando will shake up the Iceland - Florida market. After studying our competitors’ prices on flights to and from Orlando, we are confident we can offer much lower prices on this popular route, which benefits a huge market. That includes the many Icelanders who travel to Florida as well as everyone travelling between Florida and Europe. PLAY is a real low-budget airline that aims to offer the lowest prices. With our operations on this popular route, many more will be able to fly to Florida and experience this wonderful area.”

The new reimagined AAdvantage loyalty programme launched....

American Airlines leads the way in customer loyalty with the official launch of the reimagined AAdvantage® program, designed to reward members with enhanced benefits, more ways to earn status and the easiest way to unlock a world-class customer experience.

At the centre of this innovative approach is Loyalty Points, the only metric that, starting March 1, AAdvantage members need to track to earn status. This single-point system, in which one qualifying AAdvantage mile earned equals one Loyalty Point, positions the AAdvantage program as the largest airline loyalty program that will not require members to track miles, dollars and/or flight segments to earn status.

“The past few years have taught us that loyalty is not one-size-fits-all — it comes in different forms,” said Alison Taylor, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “We recognize the path to earning status is different for each individual, which is why we’re giving members more ways to earn Loyalty Points — whether by flying, shopping or using an AAdvantage credit card. We want to make it easier for our customers to achieve status wherever they may be in their travel journey.”

The simplicity of Loyalty Points

In March, AAdvantage members will have access to an updated online AAdvantage Status Estimator to help project their status qualification from flying and shopping. For every qualifying AAdvantage mile earned, members receive one Loyalty Point. Members have been accruing Loyalty Points since Jan. 1. Also, in March, members will see their progress toward status with Loyalty Points within their AAdvantage account on aa.com and the American Airlines app.

AAdvantage 2022 status requirements

 Status                                    Loyalty Points

AAdvantage Gold®                    30,000

AAdvantage Platinum®           75,000

AAdvantage Platinum Pro® 125,000

AAdvantage Executive Platinum® 200,000

Once a member achieves a status level, their enhanced travel experience and status will be valid through March 31 of the following year.

Complimentary upgrades for all status members

To elevate the travel experience for all status members, American is expanding complimentary upgrade access for AAdvantage Gold and AAdvantage Platinum members to include all flights on American within North America regardless of the flight distance. For travel starting March 2, an upgrade will automatically be requested if everyone in the reservation is eligible for a complimentary upgrade. Members will only need to use 500-mile upgrades if they want to upgrade travel companions who do not hold AAdvantage status.

Later this year, American will extend complimentary upgrades to one companion travelling on the same flight as the status member. At that time, all existing 500-mile upgrades in members’ accounts will each convert to 250 Loyalty Points toward the 2022 status qualification period.

Earning miles is easier than ever

In the air: AAdvantage members earn miles when they fly on American, the oneworld® Alliance carriers and other eligible airlines like JetBlue®. With the recently announced exclusive partnership with GOL, Brazil’s largest airline, American continues to expand opportunities for AAdvantage members to earn, redeem and enjoy reciprocal benefits across its global network.

On the ground: Members earn miles from everyday spending with the AAdvantage eShoppingTM, SimplyMilesTM and AAdvantage DiningTM programs, booking hotels and rental cars with AAdvantage partners, as well as purchases made with an AAdvantage credit card.

Finnair warns of financial consequences of Russian airspace closure

Finnair has warned of the financial implications the closure of Russian airspace will have on its operations this year.  “The crisis in Ukraine touches all Europeans, and we understand the EU’s decision to close its airspace. We are implementing our contingency plan as the situation has a considerable impact on Finnair. Bypassing the Russian airspace lengthens flight times to Asia considerably and, thus, the operation of most our passenger and cargo flights to Asia is not economically sustainable or competitive”, Topi Manner, Finnair CEO, says.

Bookings in European and North American markets are clearly growing as the impacts of the pandemic are decreasing. Finnair is currently preparing new traffic and cost savings plans in case the situation prolongs and will provide further information during the coming weeks.

“Despite the massive negative financial impacts that the pandemic had on us, our cash position is still strong, c. 1.7 billion euros at the end of 2021. This includes the currently undrawn 400-million-euro hybrid loan granted by the State of Finland, which also supports our equity”, Manner says. “The State owner has stated that Finnair is a company of strategic interest. Under these new circumstances, we as a company feel that functioning flight connections are even more important for the Finnish economy, safety and security of supply. The company is considering different solutions in case the situation prolongs, and it has an active dialogue with the State of Finland.”

Finnair canels flights to Moscow, St Petersburg and some destinations in Asia.

Finnair has finally joined other European airlines and suspended its flights in Russian airspace, the carrier has announced today. The cancellation is scheduled to last for one week the airline said in a statement, while it prepares for the possible upcoming regulatory changes.

Customers can also apply for a full refund for the unused ticket. In addition, Finnair has made changes to its refund policy. Customers can cancel their flight and apply for a refund if they have a flight to South Korea, Japan or China between 27 February and 13 March. A full refund is possible for flights to Russia for the time being.

The decision on Russian airspace usage after March 6 will be made later as the possible regulatory changes clarify.

Japan’s Timeless Festivals

One of the many traditions preserved in Japan over centuries is the holding of local festivals – “matsuri” in Japanese. These are typically boisterous and colourful events that bring local communities together; they normally incorporate ceremonies around shrines and temples where local residents pray to the gods for peace and protection from natural disasters, and perhaps express their thanks for a successful harvest. Many matsuri features colourful floats held aloft by groups of young revellers dressed in loincloths or happi festival coats. Many of Japan’s festivals date back centuries, each of them reflecting the history and culture of the local area.

As a result of the COVID pandemic, many of Japan’s festivals have been scaled back or postponed during the past two years. However, many of the communities hosting them are making strenuous efforts to protect their traditions and keep their festivals alive. Some of the festivals are well known internationally, while there are many lesser-known festivals that will charm future visitors from overseas.

Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is one of the most famous summer festivals, a six-day event in the Tohoku region that regularly attracts more than 3 million visitors. Nebuta are floats bearing giant paper lanterns often featuring images of mythical figures, kabuki actors or even TV characters. More than 20 floats are carried through the streets by hundreds of haneto dancers. The unique point of this festival is that as long as someone is wearing a haneto costume—they are available for rental—they are welcome to participate in the parade. A surefire way to create vivid memories of your trip!

In 2016, UNESCO added 33 Japanese float festivals to its Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity list. They each showcase the diversity of local cultures and the collaborative efforts of members of their respective communities to keep traditional practices alive.

IT outage forces British Airways to axe majority of flights from London Heathrow.

The UK's British Airways has been forced to apologise after IT infrastructure issues caused the cancellation and delay of hundreds of European and short-haul flights from Heathrow today.

The airline decided to concentrate on getting its long-haul flights away, as there was not so many of them and it would be harder for passengers to get to their destinations if they were halted. It, therefore, axed almost all European flights. Boston, New York JFK, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and San Francisco flights were also cancelled and problems continued through the afternoon despite early assurances the technical problems had been rectified.

There were also a number of flights delayed at two other London airports,  Gatwick and City yet the disruption was greatest at the carrier's home base of London Heathrow where some passengers were stuck on planes after landing and luggage piled up high.

The carrier acknowledged it "let customers down" and would do everything it could to assist them.
"We are extremely sorry that due to the continuing technical issues we are facing we have regrettably had to cancel a significant number of short-haul flights from Heathrow today.

Customers due to travel later today should check their flight status on ba.com before coming to the airport as we anticipate further disruption during the day.

Our long-haul services at Heathrow and all flights at Gatwick and London City Airport are due to operate as planned, but customers may experience some delays.

We are offering customers on cancelled services the option of a refund or to rebook onto another service. We will be contacting customers proactively."

The airline was still working on the issue and denied it had been a victim of an orchestrated cyber-attack or that any customer data had been leaked.

Lufthansa Cargo launches new medium-haul network with A321 freighters

A321F to complement freighter network on medium-haul destinations starting in March

From March 1, Lufthansa Cargo customers will also be able to book their cargo on converted A321 medium-haul freighters. With the start of operations on March 15, Lufthansa Cargo will gradually complement the global route network with Istanbul (IST), Tel Aviv (TLV), Malta (MLA), Tunis (TUN), Dublin (DUB) and Manchester (MAN) by operating these freighters. In the summer schedule, the carrier will also add flights to Cairo (CAI) starting March 29. The partially new stations in the freighter network will be served two to three times a week from and to Frankfurt (FRA). The A321F will make its first commercial flight from Frankfurt to Dublin on March 15, 2022. Lufthansa Cargo is thus responding to the continuing growth in demand from the eCommerce industry and can offer customers even more capacity and additional fast connections.

"With the added medium-haul freighters, we are opening up a whole new strategic business segment. In the future, the A321F will offer attractive same-day and eCommerce solutions within Europe and to selected medium-haul destinations, and the new network represents a major step towards the fast-growing eCommerce segment," explains Ashwin Bhat, Chief Commercial Officer Lufthansa Cargo. "On one hand, available capacity in the global airfreight market continues to be scarce and, at the same time, end consumers expect short delivery times for their ordered goods. With the medium-haul freighter, we can close this gap and continue to reliably and quickly provide our customers with the capacity they need with the same quality and expertise for which Lufthansa Cargo is known."

The conversion of the first aircraft with the registration D-AEUC has already been completed. Among other things, the floor has been reinforced accordingly, a roller system for moving cargo and a large cargo door were installed. A total of 14 pallet and container positions in the maindeck and 10 in the lower deck are available to Lufthansa Cargo customers per aircraft. This results in a payload of 28 tons per aircraft. The second medium-haul freighter is expected to enter service in late summer. Both will be operated under a wet lease agreement by Lufthansa CityLine, each under Lufthansa Cargo flight numbers. Lufthansa CityLine, as a Lufthansa Group company, has been working intensively on the technical and operational preparations of this first A321 converted freighter. The twin-engine Airbus A321 is one of the most versatile aircraft in its class: Being able to carry containers in the main deck, it offers fast loading and unloading and therefore enables very efficient flight operations.

Austrian Airlines flies above pre-crisis level in summer.........

Austrian Airlines has seen a rapid increase in bookings since the recent announcements of large-scale covid restrictions easing throughout Europe. The firm says demand for flights during the Easter holidays is high, with travellers mainly drawn to warm water destinations such as the Maldives, Mauritius or Cancún.

Since the easing announcements in Thailand, Austrian flights to Bangkok have also been in high demand again. Mediterranean destinations such as Málaga or classic city trip destinations such as Paris, Hamburg or Berlin are also popular in spring and have already been increased in some cases with additional frequencies.

"The huge increase in bookings and the desire to travel of the Austrians do not surprise us. People want to get out and discover new things – Austrian is a travel companion of trust!" says Austrian Board Member for Sales Michael Trestl.

With over 110 destinations and a broad frequency increase, the airline is offering 120% of the pre-crisis year 2019 levels this summer. The need for travellers to catch up is already evident in the booking figures for the summer months. Popular European destinations such as Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Thessaloniki, Keflavik or Larnaca have been booked thousands of times in the past few days alone. Due to the high demand for flights to the Balearic Islands, Austrian Airlines serves the islands of Mallorca with up to three flights a day and Ibiza with up to five flights a week in summer. Austrian flights across the Atlantic are also heavily booked. With the resumption of Los Angeles in the route network, Austrian Airlines will offer up to 33 weekly direct connections to the USA from May. For the summer flight schedule, Austrian Airlines is reactivating all aircraft in its fleet in order to fly hundreds of thousands of travellers safely on holiday.

Eurowings ramping up schedules for summer season as demand increases

Eurowings ramping up schedules for the summer season as demand increases

Eurowings is preparing for a summer with enormous catch-up effects. After a significant increase in tourist flight bookings – several tens of thousands every day – demand for business routes is also picking up. After two years of the pandemic and months of working from home, the desire for freedom in both private and professional contexts is becoming stronger and stronger: people have had to postpone their vacations, long-planned visit to friends and family or trips to see their business partners, sometimes several times.

After numerous countries, such as Spain, Sweden or Denmark, have already largely returned to normality, the German government has also decided on far-reaching relaxations: almost all Covid-related measures are to be lifted by the end of March. Against this background, people's longing to finally be able to travel again is coming into focus.

Jens Bischof, CEO Eurowings: "The current formula is: the longer the contact restrictions, the greater the desire to travel. After two years of the pandemic, millions of people finally want to catch up on their holidays or meet important business contacts in person again. Our increase in bookings is currently following the 'ketchup bottle principle': first nothing for a long time, then everything at once."

CEO Jens Bischof: "Millions of people finally want to catch up on their holidays or meet important business contacts in person again after two years of the pandemic".

Expansion of the flight schedule

Eurowings is responding to the rising demand by significantly increasing its frequencies on both leisure and business routes.

Business routes to be resumed by the end of March
In the context of the pandemic, Eurowings had to temporarily suspend some routes. With the increasing demand on business routes, numerous domestic and European connections will be resumed by the end of March.

From Hamburg, for example, there will be up to eleven flights a week to Amsterdam and up to nine flights a week to Nuremberg.

Lufthansa offers more than 50 additional flights from and to Frankfurt and Munich as Easter demand jumps

From Frankfurt more than 30 additional flights to Palma de Mallorca, Faro, Funchal and Larnaca
From Munich more than 20 additional flights to Faro, Heraklion, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Palma de Mallorca

The easing of travel restrictions across Europe is giving many airlines a noticeable surge in demand for the Easter vacations. Last week was the most successful booking week for the German airline Lufthansa in the last two years, with a four-fold increase in new bookings compared to the same week in 2021.

To meet the high demand, especially of “sun seekers,” Lufthansa is now offering at short notice or the upcoming Easter holidays more than 50 additional flights to and from Frankfurt as well as Munich. From Frankfurt, vacationers can look forward to more than 30 additional flights to the south during the Easter vacations. Five additional connections from Frankfurt to Palma de Mallorca (Spain), five connections to Faro (Portugal), three connections to Funchal on Madeira (Portugal) and two connections to Larnaca (Cyprus) are now also in the flight schedule.

More than 20 extra flights will be operated from Munich, flying guests to the most beautiful vacation regions in Europe. The following connections from Munich will be added to the already expanded flight schedule: twice to Faro (Portugal), twice to Heraklion (Greece), twice each to Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and a connection to Palma de Mallorca (all Spain).

The most popular countries for travel of Lufthansa guests for the Easter holidays as well as the coming summer are Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Cyprus. Particularly worth mentioning is the comeback of city breaks. Barcelona, London, Rome, Oslo and Athens are in particular demand for city trips in the coming spring and summer. The number of connections to these and many other cities has doubled compared with the previous year.

The current entry and quarantine regulations apply to travellers. Lufthansa continues to offer all customers maximum booking security and flexibility. This enables risk-free vacation planning: all fares can still be rebooked. Customers can find the latest information on entry requirements at lufthansa.com.
