Air Canada Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2021 Financial Results

Air Canada Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2021 Financial Results

Air Canada has reported its fourth quarter and full year 2021 financial results which shows record cargo revenues of  $1.495 billion and operating revenues of $6.400 billion.

    • Fourth quarter 2021 operating revenues of $2.731 billion, 30 per cent higher than in the third quarter of 2021, and over three times fourth quarter 2020 operating revenues
    • Fourth quarter 2021 operating loss of $503 million compared to an operating loss of $1.003 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020
    • Fourth quarter 2021 EBITDA(1) (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization), excluding special items, of $22 million compared to negative EBITDA (excluding special items) of $728 million in the same quarter of 2020
    • Full year 2021 operating revenues of $6.400 billion compared to 2020 operating revenues of $5.833 billion
    • Record cargo revenues in 2021 of $1.495 billion compared to 2020 cargo revenues of $920 million
    • Full year 2021 operating loss of $3.049 billion compared to an operating loss of $3.776 billion in 2020
    • Full year 2021 negative EBITDA (excluding special items) of $1.464 billion compared to negative EBITDA (excluding special items) of $2.043 billion in 2020
    • Unrestricted liquidity of $10.4 billion at December 31, 2021, practically unchanged from September 30, 2021, excluding funds that were available at September 30, 2021 under the financial package with the Government of Canada

"The unpredictable course of COVID-19 made 2021 extremely challenging for Air Canada and the global airline industry. But the sequential and year-over-year improvement in Air Canada's fourth quarter results shows the underlying recovery remains intact despite the Omicron variant. Our progress rebuilding our airline is due to the hard work, resourcefulness, and commitment of our people. I warmly thank our employees for their dedication and professionalism, which have been unwavering through nearly two years of a global pandemic. I also thank our customers, including shippers, for their steadfast loyalty in continuing to choose Air Canada. As restrictions lift and more people return to flying with us, they will discover measures introduced for COVID safety have been adapted to smooth their journey. As we look at our renewed commitment to customer service excellence, we have more exciting initiatives to come," said Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

For more information and bookings please visit Air Canada's site here.

"Our quarterly EBITDA exceeded our expectations and turned positive for the first time in seven quarters, cash flow from operations remained positive and accelerated from the third quarter, and we ended the year with $10.4 billion in unrestricted liquidity, an increase of $2.3 billion, or about 29 per cent from the start of the year. We grew our capacity 26 per cent from the previous quarter, while continuing to successfully manage load factor and yields in the right direction. Prior to Omicron's onset, ticket sales reached 65 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in October and November. These are all encouraging indicators.

"Moreover, robust advance ticket sales, which grew almost $400 million in the quarter, give us confidence that our customers will keep returning and that Omicron's effect on our business is travel deferred, not cancelled. Our other lines of business thrived throughout the year, Air Canada Cargo's record annual revenue of nearly $1.5 billion exceeded $1 billion for the first time, reaching $490 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, our transformed Aeroplan program reported strong billings, and Air Canada Vacations bookings sharply rebounded.

"There are other unmistakable signs of revival. We have been actively restoring our network, with 118 stations served at the end of 2021 up from 70 at its start, and the average number of daily flights rising to 665 in December 2021 from 245 in January 2021. We have been advancing ESG initiatives, including those related to the environment and diversity. And, most importantly, we have recalled over 10,000 colleagues, including 3,900 in the fourth quarter, and we have also begun hiring new employees. As we move into 2022, all expectations are that the recovery in air travel will continue, albeit unevenly. Nonetheless, we believe the regeneration of our business will gain momentum. To this end, we are working cooperatively with governments as they look to adapt their policies, based on science, and taking into account the significant health and safety measures Air Canada and the airline industry have implemented, to allow Canada to capture the economic benefits of the global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, many of which will be derived from increased trade and travel," said Mr. Rousseau.

Norwegian reports 117 million krone before tax profit in the last quarter of 2021.

The budget carrier, Norwegian has reported its fourth quarter and preliminary full-year results for 2021 and the airline scored a profit before tax (EBT) was NOK 117 million, compared to a loss of NOK 16.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, 3.1 million passengers travelled with Norwegian, up from 0.6 million in the same period last year and 2.5 million in the previous quarter. Production (ASK) was 4.6 billion seat kilometres, while passenger traffic (RPK) was 3.6 billion seat kilometres. The load factor increased to 77.0 percent, up from 52.4 percent in the same period in 2020 and 73.1 percent in the previous quarter. At the end of the fourth quarter of 2021, the total operational fleet comprised 51 aircraft.

Norwegian has continued to focus on cost control and liquidity discipline across every aspect of the company, which has led to an improvement in the cash position. By the end of the fourth quarter, cash and cash equivalents increased to NOK 7.7 billion.

“I am pleased that we have been able to adapt to fluctuations quickly and efficiently and that we can report a profit and an improved cash position in a quarter strongly affected by the omicron virus and government-imposed travel restrictions. I would also like to thank colleagues from across the airline for their continued dedication and hard work. We are looking forward to welcoming more customers on board heading into the busier spring and summer seasons, with a fleet increasing to 70 aircraft and over 270 routes on sale,” said Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

Punctuality, meaning the share of flights departing on schedule, was 87.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021, down from 94.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020 and 91.0 percent in the previous quarter. Norwegian was named the most punctual Nordic airline in 2021, and number three in Europe.

Delta brings back hot meals and more - here's what you can expect on your next Delta flight?

It has been an extraordinary and unpredictable last two years, now with more passengers returning to flying and travel restrictions being lifted, Delta has updated its onboard offering.

Allison Ausband, Delta’s E.V.P. and Chief Customer Experience Officer explains some of the ways Delta has already transformed travel and outline what’s on the horizon in the months ahead.

WHAT’S AVAILABLE TO EAT AND DRINK ONBOARD THESE DAYS?
Allison: We’re continuing to bring back elements of the onboard experience we know our customers have missed. Starting in March, First Class customers on select flights 900 miles or greater will again enjoy hot meals featuring local ingredients and favourite items. Menu highlights include ginger beer-braised osso bucco, wild mushroom ravioli, chicken cacciatore and French bread pizza. Additionally, customers can enjoy barbecue beef short ribs from Atlanta favourite Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q on select flights departing Atlanta. Our desserts will also delight, with sweets like ricotta cheesecake, frozen Greek yoghurt with cherry syrup, and a strawberry, rhubarb and pretzel tart (the tart is my favourite!).

Because we know our customers love having more choices, we’re also bringing back four snack options to every flight starting this month. You’ll be able to choose among Biscoff cookies, almonds, Rold Gold pretzels and USDA-certified organic bars from Kate’s Real Food; we’re currently offering their dark chocolate cherry and almond bar.

This is the latest in a series of intentional steps we’ve been taking since April 2021 to reintroduce the service Delta is known for. We started with introducing new beverages and snacks, meals from top U.S. restaurants in Delta One on premium coast-to-coast routes, and fresh meals to First Class customers across our domestic system.

We’ve also introduced unique beverages onboard from diverse and sustainable suppliers, including vodka from Du Nord Social Spirits, America’s first Black-owned distillery, and new, sustainable canned wine from the award-winning winemaker at Imagery Winery.

Our specially curated menus and beverage options will wow customers as we continue to create an onboard dining experience that builds on our premium service and culture of innovation.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BOARDING PROCESS?
A: We’re always aiming to make your journey through the airport as easy as possible. Last fall, we brought back our boarding zones for a quicker and easier boarding process, and we’ve started bringing back our Sky Priority boarding lanes, which we know our SkyMiles Members have missed. Customers are invited to board according to boarding zones that correspond to their Medallion Status, Sky Priority, Delta SkyMiles American Express Card or cabin. We’ve also reinstated our popular virtual queuing for users of the Fly Delta app to help make this process even more seamless.

Thanks to Delta’s partnership with TSA, qualifying customers in Atlanta and Detroit can opt in to make use of new facial recognition technology that provides the ability to check bags, pass through security and board their flight completely hands-free through use of their digital identity (SkyMiles Member number, passport number and Known Traveler Number).

IS THERE RELIABLE WI-FI ONBOARD SO I CAN WATCH A MOVIE OR CATCH UP ON EMAILS?
A: We know how important fast-streaming and reliable Wi-Fi is for our customers. More than half of our domestic mainline customers now have access to fast-streaming connectivity for only $5 per flight – no matter the duration – through our new partnership with Viasat. In fact, Delta’s onboard Wi-Fi is now up to two times faster than it was in 2020, a big step forward and just one way we are keeping you connected on board. And if you’d rather get comfortable with a new box office hit, favourite show, or meditative content through our seatback screens, there is something for everyone to discover through Delta Studio – we now have over 350 movies for customers to choose from.

I HAVEN’T BEEN TRAVELING AT MY USUAL PACE – WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY MEDALLION STATUS?
A: We’ve got you covered. We proactively extended Medallion Status to Jan. 31, 2023, and rolled over all Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) for the second year in a row. We also extended Status earn on Award Travel with Delta for an extra year, which will give our loyal Members an even bigger head start to earn 2023 Medallion Status.

WHEN DO MY ECREDITS EXPIRE?
A: We know that flexibility continues to be important right now. That’s why Delta is giving customers another unmatched, industry-leading eCredit extension through 2023. Customers will be able to rebook their ticket by Dec. 31, 2023, for travel throughout 2024.

WHAT CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT IN THE MONTHS AHEAD?
A: Additional improvements to the overall customer experience will roll out in the months to come including introducing new, state-of-the-art aircraft into the Delta fleet family, opening the two largest Delta Sky Clubs in our network in LAX and LGA as we open ultramodern terminals at those airports, as well as ushering in a new era of onboard entertainment, just to name a few. You’ll also see more sustainable commitments come to life this month, starting with our new Delta One amenity kits, made by Mexican artisans, created especially for Delta. You can rest assured that Delta is hard at work to ensure we deliver an elevated experience that’s better for you, your journey and our world – with operational reliability that is unmatched in the industry. Safe travels, and let us know what you think after your next trip back.

Travel momentum builds as restrictions are lifted but IATA calls for even faster progress

IATA calls for even faster progress as

travel momentum builds

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data showing growing momentum in the recovery of air travel as restrictions are lifted.

Improved Ticket Sales

IATA reported a sharp 11-percentage point increase for international tickets sold in recent weeks (in proportion to 2019 sales).

  • In the period around 8 February (7 day moving average) the number of tickets sold stood at 49% of the same period in 2019.
  • In the period around 25 January (7 day moving average) the number of tickets sold stood at 38% of the same period in 2019.
  • The 11-percentage point improvement between the January and February periods is the fastest such increase for any two-week period since the crisis began.

Progressive Alleviation of COVID-19 Measures

The jump in ticket sales comes as more governments announce a relaxation of COVID-19 border restrictions. An IATA survey of travel restrictions for the world’s top 50 air travel markets (comprising 92% of global demand in 2019 as measured by revenue passenger kilometres) revealed the growing access available to vaccinated travellers.

  • 18 markets (comprising about 20% of 2019 demand) are open to vaccinated travelers without quarantine or pre-departure testing requirements.
  • 28 markets are open to vaccinated travelers without quarantine requirements (including the 18 markets noted above). This comprises about 50% of 2019 demand.
  • 37 markets (comprising about 60% of 2019 demand) are open to vaccinated travelers under varying conditions (18 having no restrictions, others requiring testing or quarantine or both).

These numbers reflect a spate of relaxations announced around the world, including in Australia, France, the Philippines, the UK, Switzerland, and Sweden among them.

“Momentum toward normalizing traffic is growing. Vaccinated travelers have the potential to travel much more extensively with fewer hassles than even a few weeks ago. This is giving growing numbers of travelers the confidence to buy tickets. And that is good news! Now we need to further accelerate the removal of travel restrictions. While recent progress is impressive, the world remains far from 2019 levels of connectivity. Thirteen of the top 50 travel markets still do not provide easy access to all vaccinated travelers. That includes major economies like China, Japan, Russia, Indonesia, and Italy,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

IATA continues to call for:

  • Removing all travel barriers (including quarantine and testing) for those fully vaccinated with a WHO-approved vaccine,
  • Enabling quarantine-free travel for non-vaccinated travelers with a negative pre-departure antigen test result,
  • Removing travel bans, and,
  • Accelerating the easing of travel restrictions in recognition that travelers pose no greater risk for COVID-19 spread than already exists in the general population.

“Travel restrictions have had a severe impact on people and on economies. They have not, however, stopped the spread of the virus. And it is time for their removal as we learn to live and travel in a world that will have risks of COVID-19 for the foreseeable future. This means putting a stop to the singling out of the traveling population for special measures. In nearly all cases, travelers don’t bring any more risk to a market than is already there. Many governments have recognized this already and removed restrictions. Many more need to follow,” said Walsh.

The top 50 air travel markets are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam.

Airbus and Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education reaffirm commitment to developing local aerospace talent

Airbus and Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education reaffirm commitment to developing local aerospace talent

Airbus, together with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) of Singapore has signed two agreements that will see both parties expand their collaboration in the area of aerospace training.

The first is a Memorandum of Understanding, in which Airbus will support ITE in developing future generations of engineers and mechanics in accordance with the aviation industry’s standards.

This will be achieved through the enhancement of ITE’s training programme and curriculum to meet the aircraft manufacturer’s standards and better address the needs of new-generation aircraft such as Airbus’ A350. Under the agreement, Airbus will work with ITE to augment their basic maintenance training curriculum by co-developing composite structure repair training and extending instructors’ competencies.

In addition Testia, an Airbus company will support ITE in developing Non-Destructive Testing capability for their education curriculum. This includes the development of practical sessions and group projects, as well organising technology talks for students, in line with the latest industry trends.

Condor flies for the first time to Tbilisi in Georgia

Condor will be flying twice a week from Frankfurt to Tbilisi. The capital of Georgia is a popular starting point for round trips through the Caucasus and thus complements the existing connections to Yerevan in Armenia.

Condor flies from Frankfurt to Tbilisi on Thursdays and Sundays and to Yerevan on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Travel with Condor can be booked with tour operators and at travel agencies, and tickets starting at 159.99 euros are available at www.condor.com and by phone.

"With the launch of direct flights to Tbilisi, Condor is consistently pursuing its strategy of offering vacations with family and friends away from the major established beach destinations," said Ralf Teckentrup, CEO of Condor. "Tbilisi captivates with the stunning nature of the Caucasus, the country's historical sites and with Georgian hospitality, and we are pleased to offer our guests even more travel options with this new destination in the flight schedule."

The two capitals, Tbilisi and Yerevan, can be ideally combined with a round trip. Due to its history, the Caucasus is rich in historic churches and monasteries set in unique scenery. Thus, the cave monastery Geghard counts as a special highlight in Armenia. Lake Sevan, the largest freshwater lake in the entire Caucasus, is also worth a visit. In Georgia, there are mountain landscapes and salt lakes to marvel at, wine-growing areas and rock sites to explore. The ancient cave town of Vardsia and the Gergeti Monastery, located in front of the 5,047-meter-high Kazbek Glacier, are among the country's most famous sights.

British Airways has become the first UK airline to officially recognise the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.

British Airways has become the first UK airline to officially recognise the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. Customers can choose to wear a Sunflower lanyard as an indication that they may require additional support, assistance or simply a little more time while travelling. The initiative forms part of the airline’s continued efforts to make travel simple and easy for customers with additional assistance needs.

The airline’s new partnership with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower will see the organisation’s bespoke, high-quality videos embedded into British Airway’s training modules. British Airways colleagues will also have access to specialised videos via the airline’s staff intranet. This training will provide colleagues with an understanding of what an invisible disability is and how to become more confident to approach and support customers wearing a Sunflower lanyard.

Increasing the awareness of non-visible disabilities across the airline and promoting the Sunflower will contribute to enhancing the customer experience for British Airways customers. Those that travel with the airline can be confident that they will receive the support, assistance and understanding they require throughout their journey.

Welcoming the new partnership, Tom Stevens, British Airways’ Director of Brand and Customer Experience, said:  “Almost half a million customers who require additional assistance fly with British Airways each year. We’re proud to be the first UK airline to partner with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower and are committed to doing everything we can to support customers who may need additional assistance as part of our BA Better World programme, so they can have the best possible experience when travelling with us.”

Paul White, CEO of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower said: “I am delighted that British Airways is the first UK airline to launch the Sunflower. As well as being supported at over 130 airports globally, people with non-visible disabilities wearing the Sunflower will now be supported on British Airways flights. This a significant step in our goal for Sunflower wearers to be confident to travel independently knowing that they will be supported when they need to be.”

United aims to quadruple the size of Its fleet of training aircraft - United Aviate Academy orders 25 new Cirrus TRAC SR20 aircraft - with the option to add 50 more

United Aviate Academy
has just announced that it aims to potentially quadruple the size of its fleet of training aircraft, in response to the surge of applications to the country's only flight school owned by a major airline. The Academy will add 25 new, state-of-the-art Cirrus TRAC SR20 training aircraft to its current fleet of 25, with the option to purchase up to 50 more.

United Aviate Academy has already received more than 12,000 applications since announcing the school in April 2021. The school officially opened in January and welcomed a historic inaugural class of future pilots, part of the airline's effort to train at least 5,000 new pilots at the school by 2030, with the goal of at least half women or people of colour.

United Aviate Academy also recently purchased seven state-of-the-art FRASCA simulators, including some with 220-degree wraparound displays, with the first of these brand-new flight simulators arriving in April. These high-quality flight simulators feature hardware and software that operates exactly like the aircraft, for maximum effectiveness for students.

"We're investing in-flight education as we train the next generation of United Airlines pilots, who are the future of our airline," said Bryan Quigley, United's Senior Vice President for Flight Operations for United Airlines. "These student pilots are receiving world-class flight training at United Aviate Academy and I'm looking forward to the day when they join our current United pilots on the flight deck."

Condor gets official certification for commercial flights with its first A330-200 aircraft......

Earlier this week Condor received the official certification for commercial flights with its first A330-200 aircraft, registration D-AIYC.

As one of four A330-200s, the aircraft is expected to be in service with Condor on a transitional basis for around two years. Starting in autumn 2022, Condor will successively take the brand-new A330neo long-haul aircraft with a three-class product into its operations. The first passenger flight of the Airbus A330-200 now certified with sun-hungry vacationers, particularly many of them from tour operator Alltours, will take off from DĆ¼sseldorf to Palma de Mallorca on Saturday, February 19, 2022.

"For Condor, the first passenger flight of the first A330-200 is an important step in preparation for the fleet renewal and towards the future. Over the past weeks, we have been preparing intensively for this day and the deployment of the aircraft, and we are looking forward to welcoming our first guests on board on their flight to Mallorca on Saturday," said Christian Schmitt, COO Condor. "Even though the aircraft will only be in service for the transition as part of the modernization of our fleet for the time being, we will offer our guests economy and business class on these flights, so that their vacation already begins when entering the aircraft."

The Airbus A330-200, with the registration D-AIYCwill initially be deployed on short- and medium-haul routes and is also expected to operate on long-haul routes in summer 2022. Unlike the new Condor A330neo, which will fly in a three-class configuration, the Condor Airbus A330-200 has a two-class configuration with 240 seats in Economy Class and 22 Business Class seats. For all Business Class guests, the A330-200 offers comfortable seats that can be converted into completely flat reclining seats at the touch of a button. All Economy Class seats have a monitor as well as a USB port and power socket at the seat, so guests can charge their mobile devices at any time. The free Wi-Fi inflight entertainment program Condor FlyStream will also soon be available on board the aircraft, to giveguests the option to watchfilms and series conveniently by streaming it with their own mobile device.

In July 2021, Germany's most popular leisure airline announced an order for 16 long-haul A330-900neo aircraft of the latest generation. As the German launch customer for the Airbus A330neo, Condor is thus focusing on latest technology, maximum efficiency and the highest level of customer comfort. The first aircraft is expected in autumn 2022, whilst the replacement of the entire long-haul fleet is scheduled to be completed by mid-2024.

Discover the east and west coasts of the USA

Stroll through Central Park, look down on the canyons from the Empire State Building or watch the colourful hustle and bustle in Times Square: New York City is worth a trip at any time of year. Condor resumed flights to the cosmopolitan city immediately after the U.S. borders were opened to German tourists in November 2021 and is now continuing them in summer 2022 with five weekly connections.

Another new destination on the East Coast is Boston. The city in the state of Massachusetts is home to the famous Harvard University and is known for its historical and cultural attractions. It is also the starting point for excursions to the Cape Cod peninsula and Martha's Vineyard Island, where culinary lovers also get their money's worth.

On the West Coast, San Francisco and Los Angeles are two brand new destinations on the flight schedule. In San Francisco, for example, visitors can see the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, which leads to the small town of Sausalitos, the flower-filled Lombard Street and the lively Fisherman's Wharf district. Los Angeles is considered the cultural and economic centre of California and offers special experiences not only for film and music lovers. A bike tour along Venice Beach, the Crypto.com Arena for sport events or Rodeo Drive for exclusive shopping experiences make Los Angeles one of the most fascinating metropolises in the United States of America. AirAsia Orders Vertical Aerospace’s Electric Aircraft From Avolon

Vertical Aerospace welcomed Avolon’s announcement this week that it will partner with AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd (AirAsia), Asia’s leading low-cost airline, to create a transformational ride-sharing platform in Southeast Asia, including a non-binding memorandum of understanding to lease a minimum of 100 VX4s, Vertical’s flagship electric aircraft.

As announced in June 2021, Avolon, the world’s second-largest aircraft lessor, pre-ordered 500 VX4s from Vertical to place with its global airline customers. This endorsement of the VX4 by AirAsia represents the aircraft’s first expansion into Southeast Asia.

With today’s announcement, Avolon has now placed 450 of its VX4 pre-orders to AirAsia, Japan’s JAL and Brazil’s Gol. Together, these airlines form a growing global community of transport operators that have ordered the VX4.

Vertical has directly agreed pre-orders or pre-order options with the likes of American Airlines, Avolon, Virgin Atlantic, Iberojet, Bristow Group and Marubeni resulting in a market-leading pre-order book by value totalling up to 1350 aircraft with a value of $5.4 bn.

The VX4 is a piloted four-passenger, zero operating emissions electric aircraft that is projected to fly at speeds of up to 200mph, over a 100-mile range. The VX4 is expected to be near-silent when in flight, and with a low cost per passenger mile, it will be an affordable option for passengers with a cost at a slight premium to a taxi.

AirAsia’s leasing arrangement through Avolon is the first placement or pre-order since Vertical was listed on the NYSE in December 2021.

I am truly excited about this partnership between Avolon and AirAsia and the potential for zero-emissions ultra-short-haul air travel in Southeast Asia. The digital era is now. In the VX4, we have identified what we believe will be the eVTOL aircraft of choice and we are thrilled to be the launch airline for the aircraft in Southeast Asia. We are also delighted to extend our long-standing relationship with Avolon, which has a proven track record of delivering for its customers and is in sync with our goal to become the leading one-stop travel and delivery platform in Asean.”

Treat yourself to a piece of history - buy a bit of an Airbus A380

On 27 April 2005, the A380 lifted off from Toulouse-Blagnac airport for its inaugural flight. This global event, remembered by millions, marked the beginning of a remarkable love affair between this exceptional aircraft and people all over the world.

To nurture this passion, Airbus has decided to organise an auction of A380 parts from 23 to 25 June 2022. This will give enthusiasts the opportunity to buy a real piece of history with parts selected for their technological and often aesthetic interest.

What will be available to buy?

Lamps, bars, stairs, handrails, trolleys, seats, and even the cockpit escape rope: nearly 500 items, the vast majority of which are from the cabin of this iconic aircraft, will be offered for sale during this event, which will be held both in-person and remotely, managed by the auctioneer Marc Labarbe.

Most of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Airbus Foundation to help fund its humanitarian initiatives. Some of those proceeds will also be donated to the AIRitage association, which works to protect aviation heritage.

Almost all the parts headed for auction come from the A380 MSN13. This aircraft, which entered service on 23 October 2008, carried up to 489 passengers in a three-class configuration. Other parts, such as the business class seats, have been taken from different A380 aircraft.

The MSN13 was decommissioned in 2021 by Tarmac Aerosave, a world leader in sustainable end-of-life aircraft management, with advanced dismantling and recycling techniques that allow a recovery rate of over 90%.

This auction, and the delivery of the MSN272, the last aircraft ever produced, to Emirates in December 2021, do not mark the end of operations for the A380. The Airbus Superjumbo will continue to operate for decades on multiple routes around the world, to the delight of passengers who continue to enjoy the A380 experience.

This auction, however, is a tribute to this aircraft. It is this programme that has enabled Airbus to become, what it is today, an integrated company, offering a full range of efficient aircraft; a pioneering global leader in sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world.

What would you buy?   Adam would buy the stairs from the main to the upper deck, Josh would buy a galley,  I'd buy the manufacturing plate and maybe a row of seats..... Or if I had the cash,  I'd buy a whole aircraft to fly pleasure flights around the world......oh well,  we can all dream.

Jet Edge Announces Cue Health Molecular COVID-19 Testing For Flight Crews and Worldwide Operations

Jet Edge announced this week that it has entered into an agreement with Cue Health, a first of its kind in the industry. Cue Health will provide all Jet Edge flight crews and global teams routine access to real-time COVID-19 molecular self-testing with instant results. Jet Edge is the first private aircraft operator to adopt a molecular self-testing solution, a game-changer for the industry.

The Cue test uses nucleic acid amplification technology to provide lab-quality COVID-19 test results from any location in 20 minutes. Based on current clinical studies submitted to the FDA, it is the most accurate self-test for COVID-19 and can detect all known COVID-19 variants, including Omicron. Cue’s lab results are directly connected to mobile devices so that critical safety information can be easily accessed and acted on immediately. The test can be used on adults and children over 2 years, with or without symptoms.

“Cue’s breakthrough testing technology allows Jet Edge to further our commitment to the health and safety of our passengers and crews,” said Jonah Adler, Chief Commercial Officer of Jet Edge. “Rather than relying on ever-changing messages from guideline groups, we are now giving each of our employees their own Cue reader and cartridge for daily testing. Their results are fast and actionable. Knowing who is positive and negative each morning greatly lessens our logistical challenges and keeps our passengers and employees even safer.”

Outlook
GUIDANCE ISSUED ON 26 OCTOBER 2021:

Even though travelling in Europe has opened and will open to the United States and Thailand in November, the travel restrictions will continue to have a dampening impact on demand especially in Asia. Based on an increased level of vaccinations, Finnair expects Asia to open to travelers more meaningfully early 2022 - exclusive of China, which is expected to open only after the first half of 2022. While cargo continues to be strong and the cost savings programme delivers as planned, due to the travel restrictions, incremental costs caused by the ramped-up capacity and higher fuel price, the comparable operating loss in Q4 2021 is expected to be of a similar magnitude as in Q3 2021 despite the gradual increase in revenue. The company estimates that the operating cash flow remains positive in Q4 2021.

Further, due to the slow recovery of Asian traffic, Finnair estimates that the comparable operating losses will continue also during the first half of 2022. Even though Finnair estimates that the operational environment in the second half of 2022 will be closer to the pre-pandemic era, the company expects a return to its 2019 traffic levels, as measured in annual ASKs, in 2023.

Finnair will update its outlook and guidance in connection with the financial statements bulletin for 2021.

Budget airline Norwegian has entered into a collaboration agreement with Neste, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuels

Norwegian has entered into a collaboration agreement with Neste, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Norwegian’s corporate customers can now reduce their CO2 emissions from business travel by up to 80 per cent through sustainable aviation fuel. The agreement is an important step in accelerating a voluntary market for such fuels.

Sustainable aviation fuel is a proven low carbon solution that has been in use since 2011. Norwegian’s modern and fuel-efficient aircraft can tank up to 50 per cent SAF. By replacing fossil-based aviation fuel, SAF can reduce lifecycle GHG emissions up to 80 per cent.

“With Neste’s sustainable aviation fuel we enable corporate customers to reduce CO2 emissions from business travel. Accelerating the voluntary market for sustainable aviation fuel sends a signal to scale production and improve economies of scale, which is much needed to reduce costs,” said Anders FagernƦs, Vice President Sustainability in Norwegian.

In 2022, Norwegian will blend in 0.5 per cent sustainable aviation fuel on all fuel consumption in Norway and 1 per cent in Sweden and France, under government mandates. All voluntary purchases from corporate customers come in addition to these government mandates.

The EU Commission has approved the remaining 50 million euros of the hybrid loan by the State of Finland to Finnair

Finnair announced on 17 March 2021 that the company and the State of Finland had signed an agreement on a hybrid loan of maximum 400 million euros to support Finnair. The decision was made by the Plenary Session of the Government on 18 February 2021. The arrangement has the approval of the EU Commission’s competition authority in line with the European Union’s state aid rules.

The company also stated that of the credit limit, approximately 350 million euros can be used by Finnair based on the state aid decision made by the Commission on 12 March 2021 and that the remaining approximately 50-million-euro share will be brought to approval by the Commission at a later stage. The Commission has now approved the remaining 50-million-euro share and, therefore, the entire amount of 400 million euros is available for Finnair to use.

Finnair is able to access the funds, if its cash or equity position would drop below the limits that have been defined in the facility’s terms and conditions.
