Massive helicopter order for Airbus from Spanish Ministries of Defence and Interior - 36 H135s

To be operated by Spain’s Air Force, Navy, National Police, and the Guardia Civil

Francisco Francés Torrontera

The Spanish Ministries of Defence and Interior have ordered 36 Airbus H135 helicopters. This signature takes place in the context of the stimulus plan activated by the Spanish government to support the industry. The Ministry of Defence will receive 18 helicopters to be operated by the air force and the navy while the Ministry of Interior will also take delivery of 18 helicopters to be operated by the National Police and the Guardia Civil. The deliveries will start next year.

The Spanish Army already operates a fleet of 16 H135 helicopters. With this acquisition, these will be the Spanish Air Force’s first H135s and the Spanish Navy’s first Airbus Helicopters product. As was the case for the H135s acquired some time ago by the army, the new aircraft for the air force and navy will replace older helicopter models currently used for advanced pilot training. The standardisation of training fleets across the three armed forces will create synergies and lead to the implementation of new and more efficient training and support activities.

“Together with the NH90, the H135 will be present in all branches of the Spanish armed forces, as an example of harmonisation and the search for synergies in training and maintenance, as stipulated by our Helicopter Master Plan,” said Admiral Santiago González at DGAM. “This collaboration between the Ministries of the Interior and Defence is an important milestone in the rationalisation of programmes by the Spanish Government".

The Ministry of Interior currently has a fleet of 31 helicopters from the H135 family in operation with the National Police, the Guardia Civil, and Tráfico. The new helicopters will enable the Policía and Guardia Civil to replace the BO105 helicopters in a wide range of missions including law enforcement, surveillance, and rescue activities.

“We are pleased to sign the largest H135 contract in the history of this programme in Spain, a key partner and one of the largest H135 operators worldwide. I take this opportunity to welcome the Spanish Navy and the Spanish Air Force as new users of this model", said Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “The H135's performance, versatility, and flight readiness have been particularly appreciated by Spanish operators”.

Airbus’ light, twin-engine H135 is equipped with the most advanced technologies available, including Airbus Helicopters’ own Helionix avionics suite. There are about 1,350 H135 helicopters operated by 300 operators in 64 countries. The fleet has accumulated 6 million flight hours.

easyJet and Rolls-Royce to collaborate on future aviation sustainability research

easyJet and Rolls-Royce have confirmed they will be working together on research into industry-wide sustainability solutions for commercial aircraft.

The study, which will commence in January 2022 and run for up to two years, will seek to explore alternative energy and power solutions, including low carbon and zero-emission technologies, and their application for aircraft. The study will include analysis of wider elements of the aviation energy and operational ecosystem, including fuel production, transportation, storage and handling.

The airline and world-leading engine manufacturer are working together to further develop knowledge of these topics in relation to both electrical and hydrogen-based power systems.

For further insight and understanding, both companies intend to involve a wide range of expertise, including energy providers, airports and aviation safety regulators.

David Morgan, Director of Flight Operations, easyJet, said:  “easyJet remains absolutely committed to sustainable flying and a zero-emissions future.  We know that technology is a key driver to achieve our decarbonisation targets. Disruptive technologies such as electric and hydrogen propulsion show great potential for short-haul airlines like easyJet and we look forward to collaborating with Rolls-Royce to support bringing this technology to maturity as early as possible.”

Jason Ash, Head of Product Development – Large Engines, Rolls-Royce, said:  “We know that Sustainable Aviation Fuels already provide a drop-in solution, and so will have the most powerful impact on decarbonising aviation and achieving Net Zero by 2050. But we also want to better understand other forms of propulsion, energy and power and their potential benefits along with the challenges in operation. We look forward to working closely with easyJet to increase our understanding in these areas.”

American Airline's two pilot training centres collect bikes for kids

Bicycles line the hallways at the American Airlines Flight Academy in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Bicycles line the hallways at American’s two pilot training facilities — the result of a friendly competition between team members at the American Airlines Flight Academy and Charlotte Training Center. Each new bike, along with a matching helmet, will be gifted to a child in need. Over the past eight years, American’s pilots and flight training staff donated more than 1,000 bikes to local charities.

“We're in the transportation business — what better way to give than to start kids off with their first set of wheels” said Capt. Lori Cline, who oversees pilot training. The bike drive has become a holiday tradition for the pilot training team in Charlotte, and this year, Cline challenged the academy in Fort Worth, Texas, to host a drive of its own. “I think the challenge between [Dallas-Fort Worth] and Charlotte has been spirited and fun,” she said.

Every American pilot comes to at least one of the facilities for recurrent training each year. When they visit during the holidays, many gladly join in for the cause. Donations also come from retired pilots, flight training staff and other American team members.

“Without our generous pilots, instructors and check airmen, we would not be able to pull this off,” said Keitha McKenzie, who organized the very first bike drive at the Charlotte Training Center in 2013. “This is a group effort. It takes so many of us to pull it off.”

Celebrating 8 year commitment as official airline of Team USA - New Delta Livery Jet.

Custom-painted A330-900 is assigned to operate primarily
trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes.

Delta Air Lines on Friday unveiled its custom Team USA aircraft livery honoring the global carrier’s commitment to connect athletes with their dreams as the official airline of Team USA. The Team USA-inspired A330-900 celebrates Delta’s new eight-year partnership with Team USA, which runs through the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Delta’s mission of No One Better Connects the World embodies the Team USA and Olympic and Paralympic spirits to bring the world together and inspire humanity.
Global carrier is now the official airline of Team USA on road to Beijing 2022, Paris 2024, Milano Cortina 2026 and LA28.
Six U.S. Olympians, Paralympians and Hopefuls—Maame Biney, Amber Glenn, Breezy Johnson, Dan Cnossen, Jen Lee and Oksana Masters—join Delta as athlete ambassadors on their journey to compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

“Delta and Team USA share a deep belief that connecting the world makes us all better,” said Tim Mapes, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Delta. “This one-of-a-kind livery celebrates our partnership, which has been built on shared values and the inspiring athletes of Team USA, whose indomitable spirit lies at the heart of both our ‘Keep Climbing’ message and the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.”

The custom livery was designed by Shane Edwards, Delta’s Product and Experiential Design Manager, in collaboration with the airline’s in-house creative team, Window Seat. Unique Team USA design elements that are incorporated throughout the livery were developed by Carey McKay, Delta Art Director and Graphic Designer, and will also be featured in various Delta visuals, materials and platforms both in flight and on the ground.

“The team opted for a clean, classic design to promote the partnership between Team USA and Delta,” Edwards said. “The Team USA logo is prominently featured, along with a blue gradient that represents the sky and 'rise to the top' with a grounding red element representing the resilience needed to get there.”

The just is assigned to primarily trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes. Serving Delta’s commitment and path to a more sustainable future, the A330-900 is a key part of Delta’s widebody fleet renewal plan and is 21% more fuel efficient per ASM than the 767s it replaces in the fleet. The plane encompasses Delta’s enduring support for Team USA and its pursuit of excellence.

To further its commitment to Team USA, Delta has also proudly partnered with six inspiring athletes on their journey to the Beijing Winter Games. Delta and Team USA have a shared drive to be the best, and the airline will support these athletes both on and off the field of play, celebrating their stories of resilience and perseverance as they pursue their Olympic and Paralympic dreams.

The NH90 rescues six in the grip of an offshore storm

On Monday, 5 July 2021, radio and television reports issued warnings: Storm Zyprian was approaching Brittany, bringing with it winds of more than 110 km/h (60 knots). At the Lanvéoc-Poulmic naval air base everyone knew exactly what this meant. For several decades, the helicopters of Air Naval Squadron 33F have been standing guard. The outstanding Super Frelon that was in service from 1979 to 2010 was replaced in 2011 by the equally impressive NH90 Caïman. However, Public Service (PS) missions have remained essential: they still involve taking off in all weather conditions, facing the raging elements and providing assistance, far out to sea if necessary. Most of the 33F’s resources are based at Lanvéoc-Poulmic (Presqu'ile de Crozon, Brittany), but it also supplies the PS unit in Cherbourg, as well as aircraft and crews onboard multi-mission frigates.

Too far for SNSM’s star

“On 5 July, due to the storm, the Maritime Operations Centre in Brest had placed us on high alert to take off in less than an hour,” explains Lieutenant Jean-Baptiste, aircraft commander. “One aircraft was reserved for this alert, and we had also requested the preparation of a replacement aircraft.”

By the end of the day, the winds had strengthened over the Finistère department and swept relentlessly inland. Further west, on the open sea, it was hell for the occupants of the Don Quijote, a 12 meter Danish sailing vessel facing a force 7 sea, with 8 meter high waves. Shortly after 9 p.m., the vessel was overturned by a breaker and lost its mast. There was only one thing left for the crew to do: activate the distress beacon and wait, hoping that emergency services would be able to face the elements... In the next few minutes, the CROSS (Regional Operational Centre for Monitoring and Rescue) picked up the signal and gave the alert. The sinking vessel was located 80 nautical miles off the coast, west of the Crozon peninsula. This was too far for the SNSM rescue vessel: rescue by helicopter was the only option.

“I was at home, just checking the weather situation when the alert was triggered,” continued Lieutenant Jean-Baptiste. “They quickly explained the situation to me: we knew it was a sailing vessel, we knew its geographical position, but we didn’t know exactly what the problem was. I suggested to the CROSS that the helicopter should be medically equipped and sent out with the French Army Health Service’s SMUR maritime team put on call. I quickly called my helicopter diver and we agreed that we should also take a second diver as backup: the situation on the vessel could be very complicated...”

By the time the emergency crew had gathered and geared up, the aircraft was out of its hangar and ready to go. The procedure is well established: just 38 minutes after the first phone call from CROSS, the NH90 Number 17, call sign Rescue Cyclone Victor, was in the air, heading west. Onboard were the pilot (also aircraft commander), the TACCO (tactical coordinator and co-pilot), a winch operator, two divers, a doctor and a nurse.

The last A380...... Emirates takes its 123rd A380 from Airbus

Emirates received its 123rd A380 in Hamburg on December 16, 2021. The close collaboration with Airbus has shaped the identity of the A380 over the years and continues to transform the passenger experience today. It is the 251st A380 delivered by Airbus.

A shared ambition

The story of the A380 is closely linked to Emirates. In the early 2000s, Airbus launched the A380 in response to airport congestion by creating an aircraft capable of serving global hubs. An ambition shared by Emirates, whose unique geographical position allows them to connect Dubai to all the world's airports such as Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Singapore or Sydney, creating the possibility to fly more than 500 passengers around the world on one aircraft. Emirates' appetite for the A380 is insatiable: with 123 A380s delivered, 50 destinations and 12 maintenance centres, the airline is unquestionably a major A380 customer.

The first and the last face each other.....

"Emirates has built its growth and success with the A380. Each new A380 is an opportunity for Emirates to offer passengers a new experience in terms of cabin comfort and choice of destination, taking full advantage of the business model offered by the A380"
-Bertrand George, Head of A380 programme.

The airline’s strategy has enabled Airbus teams to improve the aircraft's operational performance by up to 99.3%, a level never seen before on a four-engine aircraft - and to develop new innovations on an ongoing basis. The attention to detail given to the cabin illustrates the duo's win-win approach.

Cabin innovation

"Emirates has always pushed boundaries on design and cabin innovation, a key investment in its strategy," explains Michael Lau, A380 Industrial Designer in Hamburg. "Many of the innovations developed on the Emirates cabin were a first for Airbus, such as the first class showers, lighting scenarios and the recent premium economy cabin. Emirates has challenged us and given us confidence in our cabin expertise. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved together on this aircraft."

Emirates' new A380 with premium economy seats

The premium economy cabin - positioned as middle-ground between economy and business class for comfort and amenities is available on Emirates' six newest A380s, and 52 of its 123 A380 will be retrofitted in the coming months to accommodate this new-generation premium class. This is another example of Airbus' ability to meet the most demanding cabin designs and Emirates' desire to offer passengers the most exclusive travel experience with the latest cabin standards.

A new passenger experience

"While Emirates takes passenger comfort to the next level on the A380, the aircraft itself offers features that have transformed the passenger's idea of air travel. "The double deck fuselage, the cabin area and its technologies are unique. The A380 is particularly quiet, giving the feeling of calm to passengers onboard. This experience is shared by everyone, from passengers to pilots and crew. This has helped transform the attention that Airbus and the airlines now pay to passengers" explains Michael Lau.

From the A380 to the A350, a transfer of innovation

The A380 is a pioneer in many respects. "The A380 has enabled the four Airbus countries to work together and adopt common development and industrialisation methods. Overcoming our historical national heritage has been a huge challenge that made Airbus the integrated company we currently know" says Bertrand George.

The experience gained on the A380 has been used by the entire Airbus family, and especially on the A350 programme. For the first time, Airbus teams used a Digital Mock-Up (DMU) as a 3D representation of an aircraft. Moreover, the A380 enabled the introduction of new advanced materials such as carbon fibre reinforced plastics and Glare (glass fibres and aluminum), offering better properties against corrosion and fatigue, as well as weight reduction. New technologies were also implemented such as the zero-splice acoustic panel, which significantly reduces noise on the engine air inlets. The new hydraulic system (with a 5000 psi pressure and the 2H/2E systems architecture where the traditional three hydraulic circuits were replaced by two hydraulic and two electric systems), reduced weight, and improved system redundancy and reliability.

The A380 of tomorrow relies on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF)

The A380 MSN1 test campaign is on-going to improve in-flight systems and SAF capability of up to 100%. A much-awaited challenge for Emirates, which has already embarked on this path by operating the first A380 ferry flight from Germany to the United Arab Emirates fuelled with 10% of sustainable fuel.

Flying for decades to come

Beyond this new collaboration with Emirates, Airbus is continuing to fully support all A380 operators and their fleets on over 70 destinations around the world. Since its entry into service in 2007, the iconic A380 has flown over 800,000 flights carrying more than 300 million passengers.

Dominica May Soon Be Welcoming More International Flights

The Commonwealth of Dominica is in talks with Air Canada, United Airlines and Delta Airlines to expand direct flights into the country. The news comes after American Airlines recently started a new nonstop flight between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Dominica's Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM).

Direct flights from North America mean that thousands of tourists can now visit the island without lengthy layovers. The creation of quicker and easier air access invites more travellers from all over the world to escape to the island for a bit of relaxation and rejuvenation – the perfect winter vacation.

"We are aggressively pursuing various methods to ensure that people can come to Dominica on the same day they depart from their country; it is very critical for our destination, so far discussions are advancing positively," said Denise Charles, Tourism Minister of Dominica.

Dominica is quickly becoming a popular destination for eco-conscious travellers, particularly those that may want to have a luxury experience but not at the cost of the environment. As the country moves towards complete climate resilience, visitors can be safe knowing that their trip helps preserve and boost the local environment.

CTT Systems celebrates 100th inflight humidification VIP systems award

CTT SYSTEMS, the market leader of aircraft humidity control systems, has celebrated a milestone when receiving its 100th Inflight Humidification VIP system award.

CTT has in total received 100 Inflight Humidification VIP system awards for VIP aircraft from Airbus (ACJ) and Boeing (BBJ), including latest generation narrowbodies, such as ACJ320neo Family and BBJMAX Family, and widebodies, including ACJ350 and BBJ787.

“This is a great milestone achievement not only for CTT but also for our many completion partners involved in the completion projects,” says Peter Landquist, Vice President Senior Advisor Sales of CTT Systems. “Our Inflight Humification VIP system has evolved as a common request in completion projects, especially for VIP aircraft intended for long-haul operations, and with end-customers that value good health, wellbeing and feeling at ease during and after flight. Our IFH VIP system has battle-proven performance in large VIP cabins and holds excellent reliability data.”

About Humidification in large, cabin business jets and VIP aircraft

Without an efficient humidification system, the business jet cabin is far more dehydrating than any place on Earth – below 5 % RH. The Inflight Humidification VIP system generates a striking humidity increase, restoring cabin air humidity to comfort and wellbeing level, to approx. 20 – 23 percent Relative Humidity (RH). VIP and private jet passengers will benefit from reduced dry air related problems (such as fatigue, jet-lag, red eyes, dry skin, degenerated immune system) and thrive from improved wellbeing and better sleep. The CTT humidifier is based on evaporative cooling technology that effectively precludes the transfer of bacteria. The IFH system is protected by the CTT Anti-Fuselage-Condensation system to prevent moisture issues such as rain-in-the-plane.

Electra and flyv to Reinvent Regional Air Travel in Europe with On-Demand Flights on Hybrid-Electric eSTOL Planes

Electra and flyv to Reinvent Regional Air Travel in Europe with On-Demand Flights on Hybrid-Electric eSTOL Planes

Electra Adds 100 New Aircraft Orders for Affordable Air Mobility Service in Underserved Mid-Range Markets

A new generation of cost-efficient hybrid-electric aircraft is making on-demand regional air travel commercially feasible. Electra.aero, a US-based clean aviation technology company and flyv, a German company creating On Demand Air Mobility solutions, have partnered to develop a revolutionary customer-centric air mobility solution that leverages the economic advantages of Electra's sustainable flight technology to offer travelers the quickest, most cost-effective route between locations in underserved regional travel markets in Europe.

Passengers will fly on Electra's hybrid-electric, ultra-short takeoff and landing (eSTOL)aircraft, a fixed-wing plane that uses a unique combination of proven blown lift technology, hybrid-electric power, and distributed propulsion to operate on runways as small as 100x300 feet. The quiet, piloted plane delivers substantially lower emissions and operating costs than conventional aircraft. Batteries are recharged mid-flight, eliminating the need for ground charging infrastructure and enabling quick flight turnaround in diverse environments. The flyv service will initially operate between airports and eventually provide point-to-point intercity travel, taking full advantage of the Electra eSTOL's ability to take off and land in places previously inaccessible by flight.

flyv is a novel airline focused on regional air mobility. In lieu of a traditional hub and spoke network, the flyv scheduling platform uses a proprietary algorithm to optimize the daily flight schedule based on paid bookings and operational constraints. flyv will provide customers a guaranteed fixed travel timeframe to their destination at the point of booking, and exact itinerary details prior to departure.

"There is a gap in transportation services today between where ground transport is effective and where large transport aircraft are providing efficient service. We designed Electra's eSTOL aircraft to fill that gap, providing a more sustainable transport option than cars or traditional aircraft for short and medium distance routes up to about 500 miles," said John S. Langford, Founder and Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of Electra.aero. "We are delighted to be partnering with flyv to pair our aircraft technology with flyv's innovative business model and flight scheduling technology to bring this transportation solution to customers."

"Traditional airlines are focused on capacity, not on demand. We're building a new means of transport that is demand-driven and customer centric. We aim to connect unserved communities to as many other decentralized locations as possible by delivering the fastest means of transport from one point to another at market value-based prices," explained flyv Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Anton Lutz. "The economics were a challenge with conventional aircraft. The cost-effectiveness of Electra's high-performance eSTOL aircraft is the puzzle piece that makes the flyv model work. Our partnership with Electra enables a micro-mobility solution that connects the unconnected into the global aviation network in a sustainable way, creating economic opportunities for both communities and customers," said Lutz.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), flyv will be Electra's air mobility services partner in Europe, and Electra will be flyv's OEM partner for regional air mobility services in Europe and elsewhere, with a commitment by flyv to purchase of up to 100 Electra eSTOL aircraft. The agreement raises Electra's total purchase commitments to 280 aircraft. The two companies will jointly explore urban and regional networks to be served by flyv, and will collaborate on elements of eSTOL performance, economics, and passenger experience as well as joint marketing initiatives. The global urban and regional advanced air mobility market is forecast by Morgan Stanley at $1 trillion.

About Electra.aero

Electra.aero, Inc. is a next-gen aerospace company leading the way in sustainable urban and regional mobility. The company is building clean, hybrid-electric, ultra-short takeoff and landing (eSTOL) airplanes that fly people and cargo quieter, further, and more affordably. Electra is collaborating with air transport and ground infrastructure operators to achieve a turnkey solution for diverse markets. Electra's team includes some of the most respected and successful entrepreneurs and engineers in novel aircraft design, and its technology development is supported by NASA and the US Air Force Agility Prime program.
