ICAO promotes sustainable aviation fuel investment platform with development banks

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar met with senior representatives from Multilateral Development Banks and other high-level officials in Washington D.C. on 24-25 October 2024. The discussions, held alongside the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings, centred on leveraging ICAO's FINVEST Hub to support sustainable aviation investments.

FINVEST Hub's Role:

ICAO's FINVEST Hub was spotlighted as a pivotal platform to connect decarbonization projects with public and private investors, enhancing funding opportunities for sustainable aviation initiatives, particularly in developing States.

Financing Challenges:

The meetings addressed critical challenges in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development, including limited current production volumes, higher costs compared to conventional jet fuel, and the absence of production and supply chains in many developing regions.

Investment Requirements:

According to ICAO's Long-Term Global Aspirational Goal (LTAG) report, approximately USD 3.2 billion is required by 2050 to scale up SAF, underscoring the importance of creating funding pathways through collaboration with development banks and other financial institutions.

Ms. Annie Petsonk, Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Transportation, provided a keynote address during the roundtable and reaffirmed U.S. support for the Third Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuel (CAAF/3) held in November 2023 outcomes, which established the 2030 Vision and Global Framework for cleaner aviation fuels and sustainable aviation financing.

Additionally, Secretary General Salazar, met with Ms. Nerissa Cook, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, to discuss ICAO's ongoing transformation efforts aimed at creating a more adaptive and collaborative organization demonstrating operational excellence.

During his visit, the Secretary General also held individual meetings with high-level representatives of the Worldbank Group, the International Monetary Fund, the European Investment Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as Airlines for America.

The Secretary General was accompanied during this mission and meetings by ICAO's Legal Affairs and External Relations Director, Mr Michael Gill.

Air Canada Takes on AI Projects Revolutionizing the Industry

Did you know Air Canada employs over 75 employees across the fields of data science and operations research, machine learning and data engineering? You might think it’s strange that an airline employs so many experts in a domain as relatively new as artificial intelligence. But there’s a very good reason for all the effort.

Since November 2018, Air Canada has actively been building AI solutions in-house, primarily driven by the lack of off-the-shelf solutions on the market that meet the airline’s requirements.

Some of the AI solutions being developed at Air Canada include tools to optimize our flying schedule and one to improve maintenance planning.

“Air Canada’s maintenance scheduling assistant was created out of a need to plan maintenance schedules far in advance with ever changing variables to consider. The current industry leading AI enabled technology allows airlines to plan their maintenance up to 30 days in advance, whereas the newest AI application that we are building in-house will allow for two years of continuously updated planning,” said Keith Dugas, Director Operations AI at Air Canada.

An On-time Performance Schedule Optimizer tool was successfully launched last month and is being used by Air Canada’s Network Planning team, which is the team responsible for determining where the airline flies and for building an appropriate schedule. This solution uses simulations and machine learning to evaluate a potential network schedule, predicting at a high and low level its expected on-time-performance (OTP). The tool will highlight stress points from a given schedule, which will allow for pre-emptive action in either a change in the schedule months before it operates, a change in the aircraft rotation, or a change in the operational execution, resulting in improved overall on-time performance. “Building this OTP tool from scratch has been an incredible 2-year journey of innovation, great collaboration between IT, Commercial and Operations teams, and a commitment to improving our OTP, and hence improving the overall experience of our customers” said Pascale Batchoun, Director Schedule Integrity

Global Medical Response orders 28 Airbus helicopters in fleet expansion

Global Medical Response (GMR) has placed an order for 28 Airbus helicopters, including six H125s, five H130s, 14 H135s and three H145s, as it continues expanding its air medical fleet. Following GMR’s order of five Airbus helicopters earlier in 2024, the company will operate a fleet of nearly 200 Airbus helicopters, reinforcing its position as one of the largest operators of Airbus helicopters in North America.

Expanding on the 28 aircraft ordered, GMR will have options to purchase an additional 23 new Airbus helicopters over the next three years. With this order, GMR is anticipated to be among the first in North America to operate the IFR-capable H125.

“At Global Medical Response, we understand the critical impact air ambulances have in delivering rapid, lifesaving support when it’s needed most,” said GMR National President of Air Operations, Daniel Sweeza. “Our investment in Airbus helicopters strengthens our ability to deliver life-saving healthcare where care is needed the most. This expansion underscores our unwavering commitment to accessible, advanced care – ensuring that, regardless of where patients are, we can be there to make a difference when every second matters.”

Satellite deal signed for advanced military tech

New Juno satellite to support military operations will be designed and built in the UK.

Armed forces personnel are to have access to the latest space technology for military operations, following a deal signed for a new satellite.

The £40 million project with Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd will support around 200 skilled jobs, boosting the UK’s space sector and helping to grow the economy.

Named Juno, the satellite will be able to capture daytime images of the Earth’s surface, strengthening the UK’s Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. Expected to launch in 2027, Juno will have advanced imagery sensors, building on the capabilities of Tyche, UK Space Command’s first satellite which successfully launched in August this year.

Both satellites form part of the Ministry of Defence’s space-based Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance programme, which will deliver a constellation of satellites and supporting ground systems by 2031.

These satellites will support military operations, for instance by monitoring adversary activities, and also contribute to other government tasks, including natural disaster monitoring, the development of mapping information, environmental monitoring and tracking the impact of climate change around the world.

Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry Maria Eagle said:  “The contract for Juno shows the UK’s commitment to grow one of the most innovative and attractive space economies in the world and keep our competitive edge in space science and technology.

Delta and Junior Achievement celebrate 25 years of partnership with sustainable innovation competition

Delta Air Lines celebrates 25 years of continued partnership with Junior Achievement (JA) Nigeria in support of a transformative initiative and Nigeria’s commitment to nurturing the potential of young Nigerians.

In a vibrant showcase held in Lagos, 12 student companies from across the nation demonstrated their expertise, excellence, and innovative solutions at the National Company of the Year (NCOY) competition, themed ‘Greenovation.’

During the NCOY event, Mary Gbobaniyi -- Manager of Sales for West Africa at Delta Air Lines -- highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, expressing how the program serves as a vital platform for secondary school students to engage with and solve pressing issues facing society today.

Delta’s push toward innovation and sustainability is a business imperative that transcends the corporate realm into corporate social responsibility.

“Innovation is part of Delta’s DNA, and we understand the importance of sustainability in business practices,” Gbobaniyi said.

Dublin Airport summer passenger cap halted.

On Monday the Irish High Court put a pause on a passenger cap introduced by The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) that would have reduced capacity at the airport to just 25.2 million.

The IAA has introduced the limit to run between March and October next summer to make sure the airport didn't breach a planning condition to limit capacity to 32 million passengers a year. That limit was set in 2007, as part of a deal to get permission for the airport to build Terminal 2.

Airlines for America, a group representing US carriers, Aer Lingus and Ryanair worked together to bring the case to the high court to halt or overturn the limit on passenger numbers that could have seen flights moving to Belfast and Cork.

Today the high court put a pause on the cap, the Irish Times reported Justice Barry O’Donnell said the airlines would suffer “immediate serious consequences” if he refused to pause the seat cap. In his ruling, the judge said that the primary responsibility for complying with the 2007 planning conditions rests only with DAA, the airport's operator

Unsurprisingly, Ryanair welcomed the ruling, saying "It believes that the Dublin Airport Cap is in breach of EU legislation on Freedom of Movement. Ryanair remains confident that EU law will triumph 2007 Fingal planning restriction and will allow airlines to grow traffic and tourism with the benefit of Dublin’s second runway.

Ryanair’s aggressive multimillionaire CEO Michael O’Leary said:  “It is deeply regrettable that the airlines had to take legal action to stay the idiotic cap at Dublin Airport solely because Transport Minister, Eamon Ryan, wouldn’t do his job and issue a letter to the IAA. The Dublin Airport cap is in breach of EU law and any competent Transport Minister (not to mention Tourism Minister, Catherine Martin) would have acted to scrap this outdated and damaging cap.

Today’s High Court ruling clears the way for this matter to be referred to the European Courts where Ryanair is confident that this absurd road traffic restriction from 2007 will be removed, which will enable airlines like Ryanair to continue to grow traffic, tourism, and jobs in Ireland, where two Green Ministers (Eamon Ryan and Catherine Martin) have failed to act for the last 5 years.

We hope the forthcoming Election will remove the deadhanded Green Party incompetence from Irish tourism and aviation so that Ryanair can return to growing at Dublin Airport instead of sending growth to Belfast, Italy and Poland.”.

Despite both Ryanair and Aer Lingus legally challenging the winter season passenger cap of 14.4 million between now and March next year, they didn't ask for a pause on it at the court.

International Air Transport Association and the Airport Services Association agree collaboration

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Airport Services Association (ASA) have confirmed they will collaboration to improve ground handling safety and efficiency for the benefit of airlines.  Together, the organizations will work to reinforce standardization, promote safety data sharing, and explore new approaches to enhance sector resilience.

“Global standards make aviation safer, and ASA and its members have been pivotal in helping develop the IATA ground handling standards we rely on today. By sharing data, we will be able to support this vital activity with data-driven insights and decisions. Maximizing the impact of data relies on broad contributions. We encourage ground handler participation to strengthen our collective insights,” said Nick Careen, Senior Vice-President Operations, Safety and Security at IATA.

“This partnership is a significant milestone that leverages the expertise of both IATA and ASA. By coordinating our approach, we will ensure more robust support for ground and cargo handling professionals worldwide. Our goal is to ensure that standards and best practices are in place that the entire industry can rely on,” said Fabio Gamba, ASA’s Director General.

IATA and ASA collaboration will include:

•    Safety Data: Through ASA’s Safety Incident Database and IATA’s Incident Data Exchange (a part of IATA’s Global Aviation Data Management—GADM—initiative), both organizations will share and analyze safety information to proactively address safety issues related to ground and cargo handling.

•    Industry Standards: ASA will continue to work with IATA in the development of industry best practices and standards related to ground and cargo handling, taking advantage of relevant data. In particular, this work will focus on key documents such as the IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM) and the IATA Airport Handling Manual (AHM), their adoption by the industry and reduction of variations.
