CityJet Fleet Upgrades

CityJet's first CRJ900 to be painted into the new SAS colours has entered service from the airline's Copenhagen base.  A further five CRJ900s are scheduled to be repainted by the end of 2024, with more to follow in 2025.

In addition to the exterior paint, the interiors of the aircraft are also planned to be upgraded in early-2025, with new leather seats and a refresh of the overall cabin decor.

The investment comes as part of CityJet's newly-extended long-term contract with SAS which under which it will continue to provide its aircraft on wet lease services to SAS from its crew bases in Copenhagen and Stockholm.

Since its formation in 1993, the CityJet brand has believed in offering excellence in service.  The airline started out providing a direct link from Dublin to the newly opened London City Airport 31 years ago.

Since 2018, CityJet flights have all been operated on behalf of customer airlines – that carrier does not fly scheduled flights under our own brand. It keeps its business model simple - provide capacity as a service, and deliver this to customer airlines who require flights to be operated under “wet lease” agreements rather than doing them themselves.
CityJet provides aircraft and crew and also maintains and insures them under an “ACMI” wet lease agreement. Its customers decide where and when we fly the aircraft, and what routes it should operate on. The customer carrier is also responsible for the sale of seats to passengers and any operating costs – such as fuel or airport fees – which are incurred. CityJet crews operate the services in the aircraft, delivering the product the customer airline requires.

CityJet operates a fleet of 21 88/90-seat CRJ900 aircraft and six 100-seat CRJ1000s. The majority of aircraft operate under a wet lease contract for SAS Scandinavian Airlines, based in Copenhagen and Stockholm, with the CRJ1000 aircraft operated on behalf of Lufthansa.

Over 450 of CityJet's 600 staff are employed in Copenhagen in both flying and ground roles, making CityJet one of the most significant airline employers in Denmark.  The company also have a crew base in Stockholm supporting a growing number of aircraft in Sweden.  In addition to flying for SAS, Stockholm and Copenhagen crews also operate services from Frankfurt on behalf of Lufthansa.

United adds 8 new destinations to its schedule.

United's Summer 2025 schedule includes service to eight new cities:

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Nuuk, Greenland; Palermo, Italy; Bilbao, Spain; Madeira Island, Portugal; Faro, Portugal and Dakar, Senegal

United will fly its largest-ever trans-Atlantic schedule next summer with new flights to Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Croatia – and will offer more flights to more destinations across the Atlantic next summer than any other U.S. airline including more than 760 weekly flights to over 40 destinations

From reindeer sleigh rides and glaciers to Italy's largest opera house, United is the world's largest airline and flies to more international destinations than any other U.S. carrier offering 800 daily flights to and from 147 international destinations – including 40 nonstop routes no other major U.S. airline serves

Starting in May 2025, United will launch five new nonstop flights* from its hub in Newark/New York to destinations no other U.S. airline serves including Nuuk, Greenland; Palermo, Italy; Bilbao, Spain; Madeira Island, Portugal and Faro, Portugal. The airline is also adding three new nonstop routes from Washington D.C./Dulles, including its first-ever flight to Dakar, Senegal operating year-round and new seasonal nonstop flights to Nice, France and Venice, Italy.

Already the U.S. carrier with the most flights across the Atlantic, United's summer 2025 transatlantic schedule will be the largest in its history with more than 760 weekly flights. In addition to new flights, customers will have even more time to explore Venice, Italy; Athens, Greece; and Barcelona, Spain with earlier start dates next summer. The airline will also increase the number of weekly direct flights between Newark/New York-Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Newark/New York-Dubrovnik, Croatia, and Newark/New York-Athens, Greece.

United is also adding new direct flights from Tokyo-Narita to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Kaohsiung – destinations no other U.S. airline serves – and a new nonstop flight to Koror, Palau. These new flights will seamlessly connect in Tokyo to United's transpacific services to five hub locations in the continental United States.

The summer expansion unlocks a wide range of experiences from reindeer sleigh rides, camel racing and seeing sunshine at midnight to bucket-list attractions like the Guggenheim Museum and Italy's largest opera house.

United is the largest airline in the world** and flies to more international destinations than any other U.S. carrier. In total next summer, United will offer 800 daily flights to and from 147 international destinations – including 40 that no other U.S. airline serves.

All new flights are subject to government approval and will be available for sale on United.com and on the United app.

"No other airline gives customers nonstop access to as many unique international destinations and experiences from the U.S. as United," said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances. "Our network provides the most choice and variety for our customers, whether they are looking for a relaxing seaside getaway, once-in-a-lifetime adventure travel or to explore some of the most vibrant urban escapes across the globe."

This expansion comes on the heels of the latest chapter of United's award-winning Good Leads The Way brand advertising campaign, which debuted earlier this month. The latest iteration of the campaign highlights United's position as the world's largest airline and showcases how United's network gives customers the most flexibility and options to travel across the globe.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

United will be the only U.S. airline to serve Mongolia, with seasonal nonstop service from Tokyo/Narita launching May 1. According to the country's new Welcome to MonGOlia campaign, Ulaanbaatar is the gateway to some of the most untouched lands of Mongolia, which offers reindeer sleigh rides, camel racing and dramatic landscapes, perfect for adventurous travellers.

Nearly half a million people visited Mongolia so far in 2024, up 25% compared to 2023, as the country continues to trend as one of the top places to visit in Asia. Most of that increase has come from Europe, South Korea and Japan – and United's new service from Tokyo/Narita flights will give Americans a new, easy way to visit.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Starting July 11, United will be the only U.S. airline to offer direct service to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, a city known for its modern urban landscape, historical harbour and breathtaking nature. From its expansive street art scene to iconic sites, like the Pier-2 Art Center, Love River and Lotus Pond, the city is rich with activities for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts.

United's new year-round service from Tokyo/Narita will provide an easy one-stop option for American travellers looking to visit the city and complement the airline's twice-daily, nonstop service between San Francisco and Taipei.

Dakar, Senegal

With United's nonstop Washington/Dulles-Senegal flight, launching May 23, United will now fly to more destinations in Africa than any other U.S. carrier. Centrally located on Africa's west coastline, Dakar is the gateway to Africa with pristine beaches, lush forests and rich archaeological history.

This year-round, three-times weekly service builds on the airline's existing service to Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa; Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria and seasonal service to Marrakesh, Morocco; United's new service to Dakar will help further Africa's growing tourism industry, which has seen 13% more arrivals in the first quarter this year compared to the same period in 2023 according to the UN Tourism.

.Airbus and European partners demonstrate collaboration between helicopters and unmanned systems

Airbus Helicopters and its partners have conducted a full scale demonstration of a manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) system developed as part of a project funded by the European Union and code-named MUSHER. The demonstration took place in France and Italy from 30 September to 9 October and involved multiple manned helicopters and unmanned systems connected to a single MUM-T network.

"Operating helicopters and unmanned aerial systems in concert provides valuable additional mission capabilities such as increased situational awareness with UAS sharing video in real time for improved decision-making, all while preserving critical assets and resources," said Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. "The success of the MUSHER demonstration is a major step forward for our ambition at Airbus which is to field MUM-T capabilities by bringing European industrial know-how together for the benefit of military and civil customers," he added.

The experiment was led by Airbus, which deployed the H130 FlightLab as a manned platform and the VSR700 unmanned aerial system (UAS) on a DGA test range. Meanwhile, Leonardo performed the demonstration with a helicopter and an optionally piloted vehicle. Thales, coordinator of the MUSHER project, provided a supervision station and a mission debriefing station. Space Applications Services was in charge of the mission preparation station. Indra led simulation activities in preparation for the demonstration, while ONERA provided studies on crew workload.

The MUSHER demonstration consisted of various scenarios involving the different aircraft flying simultaneously in France and in Italy. The missions were based on concepts of operations defined by the ministries of defense of France, Italy and Spain. One scenario, for example, showcased UAS and manned helicopters for an anti-piracy mission.  The UAS was initially conducting a surveillance mission. Once it spotted suspicious activity on a boat, the manned helicopter joined the scene and took full control of the UAS in preparation for an intervention.

The in-flight testing aimed at demonstrating levels of interoperability (LOI) 2 to 4, from direct receipt of UAS data by the manned helicopters and the ground station, to the control and monitoring of the UAS from the helicopters. The demonstration also served to prove that manned helicopters and UAS from different companies and different countries, operating in distant areas, could be integrated within a single MUM-T system.

MUSHER is a project launched in the frame of the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) launched by the European Commission in December 2021. The project aims at developing a generic European MUM-T system that can operate robustly in multiple environments (civil, military or mixed), whilst reducing the crew’s workload and delivering maximum capacity in operation.

Virgin Atlantic partners with STEM Learning and Save the Children to support STEM education and disaster relief

Virgin Atlantic has announced that from October 2024, it will work with two new partners to support its core community pillars of STEM education, through its cornerstone program Passport to Change, and its disaster relief effort, using the power of its people and planes to deliver aid to communities in crisis.

The new partnership with STEM Learning will continue to support the airline’s vision to empower everyone to take on the world, aiming to transform young people’s futures by inspiring their potential career paths, removing barriers to STEM and equipping young people with the skills needed to succeed. As the largest provider of STEM education and careers support in the UK, STEM Learning will help grow Virgin Atlantic’s Passport to Change programme across the communities it serves.

Partnering with Save the Children will strengthen Virgin Atlantic’s efforts to support communities impacted by disaster, ranging from climate-related events to regional conflict. The international charity aims to create lasting change for and with children affected by disaster, helping to ensure their health, safety and access to education.  The airline will be supporting Save the Children’s Emergency Fund, providing access to healthcare, food, shelter and education when disaster strikes.

Holly Boyd-Boland, Vice President Corporate Development, Virgin Atlantic, commented: “At Virgin Atlantic, we believe everyone can take on the world. Through Passport to Change, we’re investing to create greater access to STEM education and to overcome social and economic deprivation that affects too many children today – both in the UK and abroad

Part of our ambition for this programme is to transform young people’s futures by inspiring their career paths. We know there is a huge gender gap in STEM, and that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are disproportionately impacted. By working with STEM Learning, we aim to remove the barriers to STEM pathways and equip young people with the skills needed to succeed, driving change in the communities where we work and where we fly.

Our collaboration with Save the Children is rooted in a shared commitment to ensuring that children affected by disasters receive the care and resources they need. Our goal is to support our communities during times of crisis, ensuring assistance is provided effectively during disasters and conflict. We’re incredibly proud to work with these two outstanding charities and we can’t wait to harness the power of our incredible people and use our business as a force for good in the communities we serve.”

Flights welcomed by Moldovan Ambassador to the UK on behalf of the North’s Moldovan community

Manchester Airport is launching its first direct flights to Moldova – connecting the North’s Moldovan community to family and friends and opening travel opportunities to one of Europe’s hidden gems.

FLYONE will begin operating twice-weekly flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays to the Moldovan capital Chisinau from Tuesday 17 December, a brand-new destination joining more than 200 others on the hub’s extensive route network.

"The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova is pleased to welcome the launch of the direct flight between Chisinau and Manchester. This new connection is an important development for the Moldovan diaspora in the North West of England and enhances cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the UK.

His Excellency Ruslan Bolbocean – Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the UK said: “This is the result of productive meetings with Manchester Airport earlier this year, and we are grateful for the strong partnership established. We encourage all airlines to explore similar opportunities to boost connectivity and look forward to the positive impact this will have on both business and tourism.”

Dina Railean – Salford President, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce commented: "We are delighted to see the launch of a new Manchester-Chisinau direct route, a long-awaited achievement for the Moldovan community in the UK. As Chair of the Moldovan Diaspora Business Alliance, I have advocated for this connection, and we are thrilled to see it come to fruition. This route provides Moldovans with a direct link to their homeland, offering easier travel and more frequent visits to loved ones.

Additionally, as President of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, I recognise the significant boost this will provide to international trade, facilitating faster business travel and cargo transport for companies engaging with Moldova. For leisure travellers, Chisinau offers an undiscovered gem in Eastern Europe, now easily accessible from Manchester”.

Mircea Maleca - General Director, FLYONE said: “The launch of this route is our response to numerous requests. We analyse travellers’ preferences and try to come up with solutions so that the diaspora, businesspeople, and those who want to visit somewhere new can easily fly to these cities.”

New Delft house released by KLM

KLM, the oldest airline in the world still flying under its own name, is celebrating its 105th anniversary this year. Traditionally, KLM unveiled a new Delft Blue House on its anniversary, a miniature version of a building with a special history. For the 21st lustrum, the choice was made for ‘Het huis aan de drie grachten’ in Amsterdam, a national monument that – as the name suggests – borders three canals: the Grimburgwal, the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and the Oudezijds Achterburgwal. During the festive unveiling, Marjan Rintel, President and CEO of KLM, presented the first copy to Arthur van Dijk, King’s Commissioner in the province of North Holland.

Marjan Rintel, President & CEO KLM said:   "The unveiling of a new KLM house on our anniversary is always a special moment, especially when it is a lustrum,” says Marjan Rintel, President and CEO of KLM. “We are celebrating this anniversary in a challenging time for our company. However, in our 105-year history, we have often faced headwinds and KLM has always shown itself to be creative and resilient in overcoming them. Our goal is and remains a healthy and future-proof KLM. With the package of measures that we recently announced, we are laying the foundation for a strong KLM that will continue to connect the Netherlands with the rest of the world for the next 105 years."

National monument in Renaissance style

The mansion in the center of Amsterdam dates from 1610 and was built in Dutch Renaissance style. The house has the status of national monument and owes its name to the fact that it has different canals on three sides: the Grimburgwal, the Oudezijds Voorburgwal (front) and the Oudezijds Achterburgwal. This gives the canal house different angles: diagonal and straight. The house underwent a major renovation in 1909 and has become an architectural masterpiece. The architect, Jan de Meyer, wanted to completely restore the canal house to its 17th-century state after it had been sold, divided and renovated several times since 1687. New window frames, stepped gables and, at the entrance, a sandstone door frame were added to the house. The interior was also included in the restoration project; the oak draught doors and marble floors were replaced, for example. For many years, ‘Het huis aan de drie grachten’ was used as a bookshop and publishing house.

KLM’s Delft Blue Houses

Since the 1950s, KLM has been handing out Delft Blue Houses filled with Bols Jenever to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights. The houses are miniature versions of buildings in the Netherlands and abroad with a special history and are sought-after collector’s items. Since 1994, the number of houses has been in sync with the age of KLM. Since then, a new one has been added to the collection every year on KLM's birthday on 7th October.
