The national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Saudia, has confirmed it will start new direct routes to the tropical paradise of Phuket in Thailand from December this year. Phuket becomes the second city in Thailand to join Saudia’s network, following the capital, Bangkok.

Saudia will commence flights to Phuket on 2nd December 2024, offering 12 weekly round trips from Riyadh and Jeddah combined.  This expansion aligns with Saudia’s strategic objective to broaden its international flight network and bring the world to Saudi Arabia, using its young fleet of fuel-efficient and comfortable aircraft.

The airline says that the new route will cater to the growing demand for leisure travel, with Phuket famed for its rich traditions, from its vibrant markets to its peaceful, sun-soaked beaches. Operational preparations are currently underway at Phuket International Airport to ensure an exceptional service and seamless experience for all Saudia passengers.

The carrier will deploy its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the routes which feature spacious cabins, comfortable seating, advanced inflight entertainment systems catering to diverse guest preferences, and other premium onboard services designed to enhance the travel experience.

For passengers in the UK, this new route represents an exciting opportunity to connect via Saudia’s hub in Jeddah or Riyadh and enjoy a smooth, world-class travel experience to Phuket. There is also the possibility of booking a stopover for between 1 and 4 nights in Saudi Arabia, enabling passengers to enjoy a visit the ancient kingdom that offers so much exotic promise.

Arved Von Zur Muhlen, Chief Commercial Officer at Saudia Group, said:  "We are thrilled to open up this new direct route to Phuket, offering our guests even more choice and flexibility. Opening this new route to Phuket is an iconic destination, known for its stunning natural beauty and diverse attractions. The addition of this new route demonstrates Saudia’s vision to expand our global network and connect our guests to the places they want to visit. We look forward to welcoming guests to experience Saudia’s renowned hospitality, premium inflight services, and convenient connections."

Saudia continues to top the global list for on-time performance (OTP), achieving this milestone for the second time consecutively, according to a report by the independent aviation tracking site, Cirium, for July 2024.

The carrier also has a keen eye on the future and recently singed a massive deal with Lilium to acquire up to 100 eVTOL jets.  These aircraft have unique vertical take-off and landing capabilities which will open up entirely new routes. Imagine travelling up to 175 kilometres at speeds of 250 kilometres per hour, saving valuable time compared to traditional options.

Cabin pressure issue forces Delta plane to divert as passengers bleed from their ears....

A Delta aircraft operating flight Flight 1203 from Salt Lake City to Portland on Sunday was forced to return to the airport after passengers reported nosebleeds and burst eardrums, believed to be caused by a pressure issue.

Local media have reported at least 10 passengers needed medical treatment after they were left with blood coming from their noses and ears. One passenger said she felt her ear drum burst, she then grabbed her ear and saw blood. Another passenger reported nosebleeds and ear issues.

The aircraft was tracked on the premier aviation site, flightradar24, that showed it returning to Salt Lake City.

The carrier confirmed there had been an incident with the Boeing 737-900ER, in a statement it said "We sincerely apologize to our customers for their experience on flight 1203 on Sept. 15. The flight crew followed procedures to return to SLC where our teams on the ground supported our customers with their immediate needs.

Medical personnel met the flight at the gate and identified 10 individuals as needing evaluation or treatment.

Delta offered to cover transportation for these customers to medical facilities.

Delta technicians worked the pressurization issue on the aircraft successfully. It was taken out of service on the morning of Sept. 15 and went back into service on Sept. 16"

The exact cause of the problem has not been disclosed, however, the FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.

With Eurostar as the first rail partner, SkyTeam is going full steam ahead in its mission to deliver an integrated intermodal travel experience. The new deal will enable passengers to fly into one SkyTeam hub and out of another, with Eurostar providing the link in between.

Eurostar’s increased network offers many possibilities to enjoy multi-city journeys between the U.K., France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany that can easily be accommodated by rail.

Customers will be able to fly into SkyTeam’s main hubs in France, the Netherlands and the U.K. and other major European airports across Eurostar’s network and enjoy multi-city travel in a more sustainable way. Currently, around 13% percent of Eurostar passengers flying long-haul into one of SkyTeam’s main European hubs connect to another Eurostar destination by rail.

Gwendoline Cazenave, CEO, Eurostar said: “Offering travellers the choice to see Europe in the most sustainable and convenient way by rail is a key component of Eurostar’s vision for growth. Multi-million-pound deal signed between Global Airlines and EFW for A380 heavy maintenance

Good news for Global Airlines, which plans to be the all-new, all-Airbus A380 airline as it confirms it has signed a multi-million Euro deal with global MRO specialist, Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW), to perform the base maintenance inspection on the airline's first owned double decked super jumbo.

9H-GLOBL will soon fly to Dresden where it will undergo all necessary maintenance, including mandatory inspections and component replacements, before repositioning within Europe for an interior overhaul, before the planned start of commercial operations during 2025.

James Asquith, CEO and Founder of Global Airlines said:  “Joining forces with EFW is the next significant step in our quest to seeing our first A380 in the sky. 9H-GLOBL’s journey back to the skies has taken yet another significant step forward and I am excited to see our first aircraft fly to Dresden for this work to progress. We have overcome significant hurdles over the past 12 months, and we are now very much advancing our proposition, partnerships, team and operational readiness and our partnership with EFW is the latest giant leap forward. I am looking forward to being in Dresden and seeing the work underway.”

It was only at 15.54 local time on 30th April that the aircraft, led by Commander Carlos Mirpuri and a crew of three, departed from the Mojave Air & Space Port in California, for the 5-hour and 40-minute flight to Montreal Mirabel International Airport. The massive A380 was refuelled before heading across the Atlantic, direct to Prestwick, where it landed on runway 30 at 17:00 local. The flight itself created significant local and online attention and was the most viewed flight of the day on Flight Radar with almost 40,000 viewers at its peak. Global Airlines and EFW are now working closely with Airbus on flight conditions and the tasks that will be required for the major maintenance. This will now be undertaken as part of a comprehensive deal with EFW.

“We are glad to support the renaissance of the A380 with our capabilities and maintenance services,” says Jordi Boto, CEO EFW. “We have supported this special aircraft over the years, and we are excited to re-establish our MRO activities on the A380. We really look forward to supporting our new customer Global Airlines with its first A380 and to seeing more aircraft of this type back in the sky.”

London Gatwick has launched a social media challenge to highlight the airport’s speed and connectivity to the capital.

A new social media challenge has showcased the speed and connectivity of getting from London Gatwick into the heart of the capital.

Teams filmed themselves travelling to a bar near St Paul’s Cathedral by train from four different London airports, in a race to see who had the quickest journey.

The teams all set off at the same time and filmed their journeys to document their progress. The video has been posted on London Gatwick’s social media channels.

The stunt revealed the fastest train journey was 47 minutes from London Gatwick, using the direct Thameslink service, which was 22 minutes faster than from any of the other starting locations.

Passengers can travel from Gatwick to the centre of London in just 30 minutes, with a train leaving every four minutes - as frequent as the London Underground. It is easy to pay with contactless and Oyster options available. With the largest rail catchment of any UK airport, passengers can also travel directly by train from London Gatwick to Brighton, Cambridge, Guildford, Southampton and Reading alongside numerous other destinations.

In 2023 a refurbished Gatwick Airport train station opened to passengers, improving the experience as they pass through a bigger, better and brighter new concourse. The fully accessible station concourse has doubled in size, has wider platforms, with eight new lifts and five new escalators.

Will the brain-computer interface market thrive before Neuralink?

The headlines have been full of exciting announcements about new brain-computer interface technologies that can read our minds. This data could be used in place of phone touch screens or computer mice to decode our speech and perhaps even control wheelchairs or drive cars. Much of the media’s attention is drawn to Elon Musk’s Neuralink, the company developing an invasive, wireless ‘brain-chip’. However, the fate of the brain-computer market is far less tied to this specific company than many may appreciate.

In this article, Dr Tess Skyrme, Senior Technology Analyst at IDTechEx will outline the competition Neuralink is facing from not only other invasive brain computer interface developers but also from the more established eco-system of non-invasive solution providers. More information on all of the players and technologies covered in this article, alongside twenty-year market forecasts, can be found in IDTechEx’s latest report on the brain computer interface market.

Invasive solutions: It’s not all about Neuralink

Over the last decade, a range of companies have been founded seeking to develop invasive brain-computer interface solutions. Indeed, comparatively, Neuralink (founded in 2016) has been late to the party – following players such as Blackrock Neurotech (2008), Synchron (2012), Onward Medical (2014), and Paradromics (2015). But this eco-system has been thrust further into the spotlight in more recent years as their funding levels have risen, with almost USD$1.5B now split amongst the leading players.

Funding landscape of invasive BCI players (US$). Source: IDTechEx

On the one hand, most players are proposing approaches designed to overcome some key challenges with many existing neural interfaces. This includes increasing implant longevity to omit the need for repeat surgeries and minimizing damage to brain tissue. This runs in parallel with a need for the use of softer and more biocompatible materials. Furthermore, many existing interfaces are produced to stimulate the brain rather than solely measuring neural signals, and as such, optimizing next-generation designs to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio is also critical. Finally, increasing the channel count (or number of electrodes) is also part of the value proposition for many BCI developers.

IATA announces matchmaker platform for airlines and SAF suppliers

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will create the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Matchmaker to link airlines and SAF suppliers. The development was announced at the World Sustainability Symposium (WSS) with an expected launch date in the first quarter of 2025.

“Our vision is to create a transparent, efficient, and accessible matchmaking platform that will accelerate the uptake of SAF as the aviation industry progresses towards net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The platform will do that by reducing the costs and complications that airlines face when looking for SAF suppliers. The SAF market’s maturity and globalization will be enhanced by the transparency that the SAF Matchmaker will enable. Every step in that direction is of great importance, considering that SAF is air transportation’s most significant decarbonization tool,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist.

Specifically, the SAF Matchmaker will address three critical issues:
