London Gatwick celebrates supporting local green space

Gatwick Greenspace Partnership - GGP is celebrating its 30th anniversary, marking decades of collaboration with London Gatwick and local communities to enhance and protect the natural environment across Surrey and Sussex.

Colleagues, volunteers and partners recently gathered at Tilgate Park in Crawley to celebrate the anniversary. Speeches were made by Sam Fulton, Director of Communications and External Affairs at London Gatwick, Pete Crawford, Parks and Countryside Manager at Horsham District Council, Mike George, Chair of GGP Steering Group and Horley Town Councillor, and Nikki Hills, Director of Communities at the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

Since 1994, GGP has promoted biodiversity and environmental education through its many conservation programmes, managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust.

With help from London Gatwick funding, Gatwick Greenspace Partnership (GGP) has engaged thousands of volunteers, local schools, and community groups in biodiversity enhancement activities.

Supported by London Gatwick, which funds a full-time role dedicated to coordinating volunteer and educational activities within the airport grounds and surrounding areas, GGP has engaged thousands of volunteers, local schools, and community groups.

Colleagues from across the airport have also participated in GGP’s volunteering initiatives, contributing their time and skills to projects such as installing dormouse boxes, constructing sustainable pathways, and removing litter. Their involvement has been vital to GGP’s ongoing success and demonstrates a shared commitment to wildlife conservation and community benefit.

For details of the latest Gatwick Airport Community Trust awards. see below.

Nikki Hills, Director of Communities, Sussex Wildlife Trust said: "Reaching our 30th anniversary is a significant achievement, and it wouldn't have been possible without the support of London Gatwick, other funders and our incredible volunteers and community partners.

"We are excited to continue the partnership with London Gatwick to advance our shared goals of community engagement and environmental stewardship."

London Gatwick’s commitment to biodiversity has been recognised through receiving the Wildlife Trusts' Biodiversity Benchmark Award every year since 2014.

China’s Cangzhou promotes its canal culture in the Netherlands.....

Cangzhou, a renowned city along the Chinese Grand Canal and considered the northern starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, recently held a canal culture promotion event in the Netherlands, aiming to foster further exchanges and cooperation with Europe.

Cangzhou is located in Northeastern China’s Hebei Province, about 200 kilometres south of Beijing. The Cangzhou section of the Grand Canal spans 216 kilometres, making up about one-seventh of the total length.

“Cangzhou was born from the canal and has thrived because of it,” said Guo Xinyao, Minister of Cangzhou’s Publicity Department, at the event. “Cangzhou is also known as the hometown of Martial Arts and Chinese Acrobatics, boasting many famous tourist attractions and unique cuisine.”

According to Guo, Cangzhou has already established close ties with the Netherlands and Europe. The city has opened a direct sea route to the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. In addition, Cangzhou has hosted the China-Central and Eastern European Countries SME Cooperation Forum for five consecutive years and the China-UK Green Low Carbon and Remanufacturing Industry Development Conference three times.

China is famous for Kung Fu, but few people know that Cangzhou is its birthplace.

Boeing's US factory workers walk out....

Boeing's U.S. West Coast factory workers walked off the job early on Friday after overwhelmingly rejecting a contract deal, halting production of the planemaker's strongest-selling jet as it wrestles with severe output delays and heavy debt, reports Joe Brock and David Shepardson.

The first strike since 2008 comes as the planemaker is under heavy scrutiny from U.S. regulators and customers after a door panel blew off a 737 MAX jet mid-air in January.

The mounting crises hit Boeing's stock and sparked a leadership upheaval. The shares fell 2.8% in U.S. pre-market trading on Friday, paring some earlier losses. The stock has lost nearly 38% so far this year, losing $58 billion in market value. Shares in Spirit Aerosystems, the supplier Boeing is buying, fell 1%.

New CEO Kelly Ortberg was brought in just weeks ago to restore faith in the planemaker and proposed a deal including a pay rise of 25% over four years, far lower than the 40% workers had demanded.

Roughly 30,000 International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) members who produce Boeing's top-selling 737 MAX and other jets in the Seattle and Portland areas voted on their first full contract in 16 years, with 94.6% rejecting it and 96% favouring a strike in a two-part ballot.

"This is about respect, this is about addressing the past, and this is about fighting for our future," said Jon Holden, who headed the negotiations for Boeing's largest union, before announcing the vote result on Thursday evening. The union was going to get back to the table as quickly as it can, Holden told reporters, without saying how long he thought the strike would last or when talks would resume.

Boeing said in a statement that it was ready to get back to the negotiating table, a sign that it was ready to sweeten the deal.  "The message was clear that the tentative agreement we reached with IAM leadership was not acceptable to the members. We remain committed to resetting our relationship with our employees and the union, and we are ready to get back to the table to reach a new agreement," the planemaker said in a statement.

United signs deal with Musk's SpaceX Starlink to provide connectivity in the sky - for free

The U.S. mega-carrier United has signed a special deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX to bring Starlink's fast, reliable, monitored Wi-Fi service to the airline's mainline and regional aircraft fleet, for free.

That means that United customers will soon enjoy the same high-speed, low-latency internet service in the air that they enjoy on the ground. The new, gate-to-gate connectivity will unlock game-changing experiences in the sky at a scale that no other major U.S. airline provides like access to live TV and streaming services, social media, shopping, gaming and more, on seatback screens and personal devices simultaneously.

United expects to have Starlink on all United aircraft – more than 1,000 planes – over the next several years. Testing begins in early 2025 with the first passenger flights expected later that year.

Starlink service on United aircraft will be free.

Leveraging advanced satellites with its deep experience in both spacecraft and on-orbit operations, Starlink is engineered by SpaceX and delivers internet access around the world, including over oceans, polar regions and other remote locations previously unreachable by traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals. United is the largest airline across both the Atlantic and Pacific and will be the first carrier in the world to commit to offering Starlink service at this scale.

"Everything you can do on the ground, you'll soon be able to do onboard a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world," said United CEO Scott Kirby. "This connectivity opens the door for an even better inflight entertainment experience, in every seatback – more content, that's more personalized. United's culture of innovation is, once again, delivering big for our customers."

"We're excited to team up with United Airlines to transform the inflight experience," said Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer at SpaceX. "With Starlink onboard your United flight, you'll have access to the world's most advanced high-speed internet from gate to gate, and all the miles in between."
