IDTechEx Discusses New Trends: Radar Modules and ToF Cameras for In-Cabin Sensing

With the shift towards electric vehicles, end-users are becoming less concerned about traditional differentiators like engine horsepower and are placing greater emphasis on smart interior functions, writes Yulin Wang, Senior Technology Analyst at IDTechEx This trend is compelling automotive OEMs to invest more efforts in enhancing interior features, thereby adding greater value to their products and distinguishing them from other vehicles.

Driven by regulations such as Euro NCAP, driver monitoring systems (DMS) have gained significant traction and have transitioned from a luxury feature to a new norm. As of 2024, most DMS utilize 2D near-infrared (NIR) cameras. Due to their relatively low costs, they are anticipated to be increasingly adopted, emerging as the dominant enabling technology for DMS. For automotive OEMs to further set themselves apart from competitors, advanced features such as gesture control, child presence detection, and seat belt detection are also expected to gain momentum, especially in mid to high-end vehicles. Currently, the 3D time-of-flight camera stands out as the most widely used technology for DMS, while some automotive OEMs, such as Volvo and Tesla, are incorporating in-cabin radar modules.

Radar has played an important role in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for over two decades. Utilizing radio waves with a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) coding system, radars can accurately measure the distance and relative velocity of objects within their field of view. However, historically, radar modules have predominantly been employed for exterior sensing rather than interior applications.

As of 2023, according to Tesla's website, the in-cabin radar operates within a frequency range of 60GHz to 64GHz, falling within the license-free ISM band. The detection distance of these radar modules typically ranges from 0.4 meters to 2 meters, effectively covering the interior space. Though unconfirmed officially by Tesla, recent news suggests that their cybertruck is equipped with in-cabin radar modules for occupant monitoring, including functions such as child presence detection and seat belt reminders.

Layover Solutions Becomes Part of the BARIG Network

AI-supported platform provides assistance for the coordination of services

Bad weather conditions, labour disputes, or other exceptional circumstances can lead to disruptions in air traffic or cancellations of flights in the worst case. In such situations, it is important to act professionally and flexibly, as passengers should be able to continue their journeys as quickly and easily as possible. The technology company Layover Solutions has taken up this challenge and provides an innovative as well as efficient solution. As a new business partner of the airline association BARIG (Board of Airline Representatives in Germany), the start-up offers AI-supported measures for layover management.

Layover Solutions has developed a B2B online platform that connects airlines, hotel operators, transportation service providers, and passengers altogether. It makes it possible to coordinate services for travellers in the shortest possible time – from accommodation to transportation. The technology creates significant added value compared to conventional methods by telephone and fax, as both passengers and airline staff can respond more flexibly and quickly.

“This innovative approach is a good example of how services in air traffic can be further improved in the case of exceptional events,” Michael Hoppe, BARIG Chairman and Executive Director, states. “We are therefore delighted to welcome Layover Solutions as the newest business partner in our network.”

“Our solution works according to the plug-and-play principle. Layover Solutions offers everyone involved a fast, transparent, and efficient answer to the previously still very complex and analog processes. We are proud that the solution has already been very well received at three German locations and are looking forward to the next milestones,” Isabell Ketteler, Director of Sales at Layover Solutions, says. “The integration into BARIG’s business partner network opens up new opportunities for us to intensively exchange knowledge, which can contribute to the further development of the aviation industry.”

Airbus and TotalEnergies sign strategic partnership for sustainable aviation fuels

Airbus and TotalEnergies have signed a strategic partnership to address the challenges of decarbonising aviation through sustainable aviation fuels.

In line with the objective of achieving net carbon neutrality of aviation by 2050, this partnership aims to contribute to the reduction of the sector's CO2 emissions, in which Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) play a key role. SAF supplied by TotalEnergies can reduce up to 90% CO2 emissions over their lifecycle compared to their fossil fuel equivalent.

The partnership will cover two main areas:
The supply by TotalEnergies of sustainable aviation fuels for more than half of Airbus' needs in Europe.
A research and innovation programme aimed at developing 100% sustainable fuels tailored to the design of current and future aircraft. The impact of the composition of sustainable aviation fuels on the reduction of CO2 emissions and non-CO2 effects, such as contrails, will also be studied.
Airbus and TotalEnergies confirm their common ambition to promote SAF technology and to strengthen their collaboration to decarbonise the aviation industry:
TotalEnergies has been supplying the SAF used by Airbus for its aircraft deliveries in Toulouse since 2016.
TotalEnergies also supplied the fuel for several first SAF flights with Airbus aircraft:
In May 2021, the 1st long-haul flight using French-produced SAF with an A350 between Paris and Montreal;
In November 2021, the first flight of a H225 helicopter, from the "Super Puma" family, using 100% SAF;
In March 2023, the first A321neo flight with 100% SAF.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said: "The development of sustainable aviation fuels is at the heart of our Company's transition strategy. We are happy to form a strategic alliance with Airbus to play our part in meeting the challenge of aviation decarbonization together. TotalEnergies has been working hard to respond to the sector’s new demand for a reduced carbon footprint. Our Company has set itself a target of 1.5 million tons of annual SAF production by 2030".

"This is Your Captain Speaking" hearing that from a female voice occurs in just 1 in 17 flights per year

Research experiment by easyJet aims to tackle outdated stereotypes of jobs in the aviation industry New study reveals over half (52%) of British primary school children believe that a pilot is a job for a man 47% of parents think their kids have already formed an opinion on the careers available to them New data shows that travellers will hear ‘This is Your Captain Speaking’ from a female voice in just 1 in 17 flights per year* easyJet is launching its 2024 Pilot Training Programme this spring with the aim of tackling gender stereotypes and inspiring more people to consider a career in aviation
Primary school children enact gender stereotypes when imitating certain job roles, a new study has found.

In an experiment conducted by easyJet, a group of seven-year-old children were asked to act out various occupations, with both girls and boys donning moustaches, choosing male names, and putting on a deep voice, when playing the roles of a mechanic, a builder and an airline pilot.

Boys were captured reaching for long wigs and announcing that nurses have high-pitched voices, whilst girls, playing the role of builders, adopted a deep voice and put on beards and moustaches.

When asked to imitate a pilot, both girls and boys put on male voices to announce, ‘this is your captain speaking’, and chose names such as James, John and even ‘Mr Banana’.

At the end of the video of the children aged seven years old from St Alban and St Stephen Primary School, were excited to be introduced to a real-life female easyJet pilot.

The experiment was commissioned by easyJet ahead of the launch of its 2024 Pilot Training Programme, with the aim of tackling gender stereotypes and inspiring more women to consider a career in aviation.
The campaign has been launched following new research by the airline revealed that over half (52%) of British primary school children believe that a pilot is a job for a man.

The study of 2,000 children (aged six to 11 years old) and their parents found 47% of children have already formed an opinion on the careers available to them by the age of 11 according to parents.

STARLUX orders Airbus A350F and more A330neo widebodies

STARLUX Airlines of Taiwan has placed a firm order for five all-new A350F freighters and three more A330neo widebody aircraft. The agreement was signed at the Singapore Airshow by KW Chang, Chairman of STARLUX Airlines and Christian Scherer, CEO of the Commercial Aircraft business of Airbus.

“STARLUX Airlines has continuously nurtured the cargo market since its inception, capitalising on the strategic advantages offered by Taiwan’s geographical location,” said STARLUX CEO Glenn Chai.

“With this order, STARLUX will become the first Taiwanese airline to operate the next-generation A350F widebody freighter. In an era of climate change, the A350F has unbeatable efficiency in terms of fuel burn, CO2 emissions, and economics, offering significant energy-saving and carbon reduction benefits. It not only meets customer requirements for carbon reduction but also aligns with STARLUX’s ESG plan to achieve zero emissions by 2050. Additionally, the three new A330neos will strengthen our fleet advantage and provide greater flexibility for passenger operations.”

“We love working with STARLUX Airlines in building and strengthening its fleet,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft. “Operating both the latest generation Airbus single aisle and widebody aircraft brings the airline enormous benefits. It significantly reduces fuel consumption and carbon emission and offers unrivalled levels of technical commonality, benefits in maintenance and training. The A350F, the only new generation large freighter, will fit seamlessly into this all-Airbus fleet and enable STARLUX Airlines to compete effectively with the leading players in key cargo markets.”

STARLUX Airlines operates an all-Airbus passenger fleet that already includes the A350-900, A330neo and A321neo. The A350F will be operated by STARLUX Cargo on  some of the world’s busiest cargo routes.

@Airbus #SGAirshow2024 #A350F #A330neo @STARLUX Airlines

Currently under development, the A350F can carry a payload of up to 111 tonnes and can fly up to 4,700 nautical miles / 8,700 kilometres at significantly lower cost than any other freighter available today. The A350F will enable STARLUX Cargo to serve all heavy cargo markets around the world.

Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent-XWB97 engines, the aircraft will bring a reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions of up to 40% when compared with the older 747F and is at least 20% more efficient than its competitor.

The A350F features the largest main deck cargo door in the industry, with fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers. Over 70% of the airframe is made of advanced materials, resulting in a 46 tonne lighter take-off weight than the competing derivative. The A350F is also the only freighter aircraft that will fully meet ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards, coming into effect in 2027.

Meanwhile, the additional order for the A330neo will see STARLUX Airlines continue to build one of the most modern and efficient passenger fleets, offering the highest levels of in-flight comfort. The incremental order will boost its A330neo fleet from four to seven, with the aircraft featuring a premium two-class cabin comprising 28 business class seats and 269 economy class seats.

Airbus widebody aircraft are especially popular with airlines in the Asia-Pacific, with nearly 900 in-service and 190 to be delivered.

At the end of January, the latest generation A350 Family had won over 1,200 orders from 57 customers worldwide, including 50 for the A350F from nine leading cargo airlines. In the mid-size category, the A330neo Family continues to gain momentum, with nearly 300 firm orders from 28 customers.

United Airlines to restart Newark - Tel Aviv service.

The U.S. mega carrier, United has confirmed it plans to resume a daily flight from New York/Newark to Tel Aviv, following a review of the situation in Israel.

The carrier suspended its in October and now plans to bring back the Newark-Tel Aviv flights on March 2nd and 4th with a stop in Munich to ensure all service providers are ready to support non-stop service to and from Newark.  According to the airline, no Newark departures to Tel Aviv are planned for March 3rd and 5th.  The airline said it hoped to resume daily non-stop service to Tel Aviv beginning March 6.

The airline said it carried out a detailed safety analysis of the situation before making the decision and worked with the U.S. administration, for whom it will be carrying some cargo and the Israeli government. The airline is said to have collaborated with Air Line Pilots Association and the Association of Flight Attendants to develop the protocols to ensure United staff are safe and well-informed. At present, it isn't clear if staff will be penalized if they decline to operate these services due to safety or other concerns.

United said in a press release that it would 'continue to monitor the situation in Tel Aviv and adjust the schedule as warranted, including changes to the resumed service from New York/Newark'.

The airline has faced some pressure in recent weeks from certain quarters to bring back services to Israel and said it was "Eager to resume a second daily Tel Aviv flight from Newark as soon as May as travel demand recovers. Previous flying from San Francisco, Washington Dulles and Chicago O'Hare will be evaluated for resumption beginning in the fall."
