Operating from Saudi Arabia for large scale multinational air exercise brings challenges for UK's Royal Air Force

The RAF Coningsby-based Engineers currently taking part in this year’s Spears of Victory exercise that is being held at the King Abdulaziz Air Base in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have been successfully ensuring the deployed Typhoons are ready to fly.

The Engineers are mainly from XI (Fighter) Squadron and have set up a forward deployed facility at the Saudi Air Warfare Centre. Key to the Engineers' work is the small Ground Support System support team. This system captures data from the jet during the flight, and once the sortie is over the GSS team download the data to transfer it to a closed computer network.

This network allows the Engineers to access the data and informs them of any issues that have occurred during the flight.

Sergeant Shaw, Rectification Controller said:  “The GSS system is critical for our work here, it is a bit like when you take your car to a garage and the mechanic plugs a computer into your car to find the fault, but that is a simplification it does so much more.

The data from the GSS system gives us a detailed understanding of the jet and how it is performing.  This is the big difference between a modern jet such as the Typhoon and a legacy jet such as the Tornado that I first worked on. We are still the hands on engineers who have to carry out the maintenance and fix the jets, but it is the system that points us towards the issue”.

January passenger numbers up 30% for East Midlands Airport .....

The New Year really did get off to a flying start at East Midlands Airport (EMA), with more than 40,000 additional passengers choosing it compared to last January.

That’s an increase of almost 30% during what is traditionally a quieter time of the year, demonstrating a huge vote of confidence in EMA among its customers.

The 177,184 people who travelled through EMA during January boosted the overall total for the rolling 12 months to 3.9m, close to pre-pandemic levels.

The latest statistics are revealed as the airport gears up for the half-term break, when 105,000 passengers are booked to fly – a 16% increase on last year. This bodes well for EMA’s best summer yet as more people pick it as their airport of choice from a wider catchment.

As well as residents from the three counties surrounding the airport, people from areas including South Yorkshire, West Midlands, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire are increasingly choosing EMA as their low-cost gateway to Europe and beyond. They are also attracted by the effortless experience of getting through security and into the shops, bars and restaurants of the departure lounge.

By the summer, passengers will also benefit from some of the first improvements that have been carried out as part of a £120m investment programme at EMA. This includes upgraded toilets, a refreshed Castle Rock bar, new seating, better customer wi-fi throughout the terminal and new trolleys.

And two of the main airlines serving EMA, Tui and Jet 2, are each adding an extra aircraft to those that are based at the airport, meaning the aircraft stands will be at capacity this summer.

EMA’s Managing Director Steve Griffiths said: “The number of people choosing us compared to January last year is really encouraging. We’re pleased that increasing numbers of people are flying through East Midlands Airport for their European holidays, and these figures give us confidence for a strong performance this half term holiday and an even stronger summer.

“We know that more people from further afield are willing to make longer journeys to EMA, in the knowledge that their experience here won’t be stressful, as it can be at other airports. The vast majority of our customers clear security in under 15 minutes so they can start to relax and get into holiday mode sooner. Extra aircraft bringing our stands to capacity also shows airlines’ confidence in EMA and bodes well for the future.”

Dutch carrier KLM reveals new A321neo livery

The new livery – the aircraft's exterior paint scheme – is both eye-catching and practical: the dark line separating KLM’s trademark blue and white swoops farther down, rendering the nosedome completely blue.
KLM will take delivery of its new Airbus A321neo in just a few more months, with Copenhagen, Berlin and Stockholm recently announced as initial destinations. The Royal Dutch airline also revealed further details about the new aircraft's livery and interior. The airline will commence operating the first of a total of around thirty A321neos in August.

The new livery – the aircraft's exterior paint scheme – is both eye-catching and practical: the dark line separating KLM’s trademark blue and white swoops farther down, rendering the nosedome completely blue. This will ensure that, in the event of an emergency replacement, a new nosedome can be fitted without disrupting the signature blue markings. Another new standout feature is the black outline around the cockpit windows, making them look like sunglasses.

More comfort

Passengers will experience a greater level of comfort thanks to the A321neo’s wider seats, larger tray tables and spacious luggage bins. Each seat is equipped with a tablet holder and a USB port, and there is multi-coloured "mood lighting" that adjusts at every stage of the flight. Crew members will also have more room for manoeuvre thanks to the wider aisle and easy-to-reach overhead bins. The A321neo interior was meticulously designed to enhance the KLM experience, with additional blue detailing and special lighting at the entrance to ensure a warm welcome.

Cleaner, quieter, more fuel-efficient

Preparations for the introduction of the new aircraft are in full swing. KLM will debut Airbus321neo operations in August.

Marjan Rintel, CEO of KLM said:  "The arrival of the A321neo marks a major upgrade of our European fleet. It is 50% quieter and generates 15% fewer carbon emissions than the aircraft it is replacing, making this an important step towards cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient aviation."

American Express opens largest Centurion Lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

New Centurion Lounge Opens

American Express has opened a new Centurion Lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the busiest airport in the world. At nearly 26,000 square feet, it is the largest lounge in the Centurion Lounge network. It features a locally-inspired menu from Atlanta-based Chef Deborah VanTrece, numerous seating options for guests to relax or work before their flight, outdoor terraces with views of the airfield, and The Reserve by American Express, a bespoke whiskey bar serving signature cocktails designed by Jim Meehan, Centurion Mixologist, along with a selection of classic and new American whiskeys. The new Centurion Lounge is located in Concourse E near gate E11.

“The new Centurion Lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will serve travellers in one of the airports our Card Members visit most,” said Audrey Hendley, President of American Express Travel. “It features amenities we know travellers enjoy, like outdoor terraces, and plenty of space to relax, along with local touches infused throughout the menus and design, that guests will remember long after their trip.”

Art and Design Inspired by “The City in the Forest”

The design is inspired by Atlanta’s reputation as “the city in the forest” and its abundance of trees as well as our Card Members’ passion for wellness. The main seating area features a 50-year-old olive tree and a 3,850-square-foot custom light sculpture that represents a forest canopy, creating a relaxing space for Card Members to unwind before their flights. Additionally, visitors can enjoy multiple outdoor terraces, a first for the Centurion Lounge network. These meticulously landscaped seating areas are equipped with heaters and fans for use year-round.

The lounge showcases commissioned artwork from local artists including a new, textural interpretation of the quintessential American Express watchdog by Lucha Rodríguez and a large-scale multimedia piece by Michi Meko that draws inspiration from Georgia’s landscape. Additionally, a 60-foot mural of abstracted leaf-like shapes, painted by Evan Blackwell Helgeson, stretches from the interior dining area to the exterior terrace.

Modern, Global Soul Food Curated by Atlanta’s Own Chef Deborah VanTrece

Chef Deborah VanTrece, owner of local Atlanta restaurants Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours, Oreatha’s At The Point and La Panarda, all of which can be booked on Resy, will bring her take on modern, global soul food to the lounge. Using flavours and techniques she discovered travelling the world as a former flight attendant and enhanced by her own family food traditions and fresh, local ingredients, the custom menu includes Black Eyed Pea Biryani, Za'atar Grilled Chicken Thighs with Green Tomato Chimichurri, and Twisted Soul Salad with Strawberry Peppercorn Vinaigrette. Additionally, there will be a dedicated food and beverage station with gluten-free and vegan options, including protein bites, salads, smoothies, and immunity booster juice shots.

“Atlanta has become such an interesting melting pot of cultures and cuisines. I’m thrilled to partner with American Express to bring food that celebrates these traditions, along with the best southern ingredients, to the Centurion Lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,” said Chef Deborah VanTrece. “Travel has inspired my approach as a chef and I feel blessed that, through this collaboration, I’ll be able to share my creative vision for food and hospitality with travellers from around the world.”

Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, was awarded an F100 engine performance-based logistics (PBL) sustainment contract by South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). This contract, with a base value of $355 million, is the third consecutive PBL contract Pratt & Whitney and DAPA have signed since 2012, offering on-going maintenance support for the Republic of Korea Air Force's (ROKAF) F-15 Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons.

WestJet Group refinances majority of existing term loan facility secured by WestJet Rewards loyalty program and WestJet's brand

WestJet Group Inc. announced that it extended the maturity of the substantial majority of its term loan borrowings to 2031. WestJet did so by entering into a new secured term loan facility, capitalizing on its ratings upgrade and its strong financial performance, which exceeded its pre-COVID earnings.

In 27 years of serving Canadians, WestJet has cut airfares in half and increased the flying population in Canada to more than 50 percent. WestJet launched in 1996 with three aircraft, 250 employees and five destinations, growing over the years to more than 180 aircraft, 14,000 employees and more than 120 destinations in 26 countries.

"We are very pleased with this innovative structure, secured by our loyalty program and brand," said WestJet Group Chief Financial Officer Mike Scott. "This opportunistic refinancing transaction enhances our financial flexibility and was oversubscribed, which is reflective of the strength of the WestJet Rewards Loyalty program and the WestJet brand."

WestJet's liquidity is in excess of $2 billion and its pro forma adjusted net leverage ratio at year-end 2023 was approximately three times adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

Norwegian improves company score in global climate CDP ranking

Norwegian is the largest Norwegian airline and one of Europe’s leading low-cost carriers. The company has around 4,500 employees and offers a comprehensive route network between Nordic countries and destinations in Europe. Since 2002, more than 300 million passengers have flown with Norwegian.
Norwegian improves and receives the highest possible score in several categories for its emission reduction initiatives in this year’s global climate ranking from the international organisation CDP. Norwegian receives an overall score B and the highest possible score in the categories for risk management processes, risk disclosure, and in reporting and verification of direct and indirect energy supply emissions (Scope 1 and 2).

The CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) is an environmental organisation for the global environmental disclosure system. The CDP publishes annual results for climate ranking. Norwegian’s strategy for reducing climate impact is measured in several categories and for 2023, the airline receives an overall score B, which is an improvement from last year. This is an important recognition to Norwegian’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“We have committed to ambitious targets and are actively taking measures to reduce the company’s climate impact. It is therefore both rewarding and motivating to see that the hard work we are doing, leads to improvement in more categories than before. This means a lot to us and confirms that our strategy is working,” said Anders Fagernæs, Vice President Sustainability at Norwegian.

Norwegian started disclosing its effort to tackle climate change through CDP in 2021 and has made considerable progress with positive results. Working with transparency via Carbon Disclosure Project is a central element in Norwegian’s response to the increasing demand for environmental transparency from investors, financial institutions, customers and policymakers.

“We have a strategy for reducing the company’s climate impact, and we believe that the most efficient tool in the nearby future is to increase the use of fossil-free fuels. Besides fossil-free fuels, fleet renewal and advanced weather systems for more fuel-efficient navigation, are additional measures with immediate emissions reduction. We believe that transparency, reporting and openness will make it easier for customers to make qualified choices,” said Fagernæs.
