Loganair is connecting Dundee with the south and north of the UK like never before with the launch of its new London to Orkney route.

For the first time ever, passengers will be able to fly from Kirkwall to London City with a stop-off in Dundee thanks to a new, twice-weekly service that started earlier this month.

The new same-flight service operates via the City of Discovery, giving passengers the option to split up their journeys in Dundee or stay on board for a seamless, unrivalled connection from either end of the country.

The three-and-a-half-hour service is ideal for those looking to explore the famous archipelago of Orkney off the north-east coast of Scotland or visit Dundee, famed for jute, jam and journalism. The tourism-boosting connection also offers business commuters a seamless route into the heart of the UK’s capital.

Fares start at £62 one way with ADS discount for Orkney-boarding passengers and are inclusive of 15kg luggage.

Loganair’s Chief Commercial Officer, Luke Lovegrove, said:  “Connecting Dundee with Kirkwall is a logical step for us after the success of the Sumburgh service, and we look forward to welcoming our customers on this new route from today.

After 60 years of operating from Dundee, we are still firmly committed to the city. The new route will extend on to London, providing additional opportunities for those wishing to fly from Kirkwall to London and vice versa.’’

Mark Flynn, convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, said:  “This announcement is a clear vote of confidence from Loganair, not only in Dundee Airport but in the city itself.

By expanding services to Kirkwall, it will be even easier for people who may not have considered coming to the city before to get here, and vice versa, opening up a previously untapped visitor base.”

The UK’s largest regional airline will be flying 60+ members of the touring company on scheduled flights this June as Scottish Ballet presents its acclaimed production of A Streetcar Named Desire in Kirkwall and Stornoway.

Kirsten Cockburn, Director of Partnerships, Scottish Ballet, said:  “We are thrilled to be renewing our relationship with Loganair, a partnership that has been hugely beneficial to Scottish Ballet as a charity since we first worked together in 2018. Air Cargo Priorities: Sustainability, Digitalization & Safety

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) highlighted three priorities to enable the air cargo industry to maintain momentum against the backdrop of a challenging operating environment. The priorities, outlined at the 16th World Cargo Symposium (WCS), which opened in Istanbul on Tuesday are:

•    Sustainability
•    Digitalization
•    Safety

“Air cargo is a different industry than the one that entered the pandemic. Revenues are greater than they were pre-pandemic. Yields are higher. The world learned how critical supply chains are. And the contribution of air cargo to the bottom line of airlines is more evident than ever. Yet, we are still linked to the business cycle and global events. So, the war in Ukraine, uncertainty over where critical economic factors like interest rates, exchange rates and jobs growth are concerns that are real to the industry today. As we navigate the current situation, air cargo’s priorities have not changed, we need to continue to focus on sustainability, digitalization, and safety,” said Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a critical priority and the aviation industry’s license to do business. Last October, at the 41st ICAO Assembly, governments agreed to the Long-Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, in line with the industry’s commitment adopted in 2021.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is critical to achieving this goal, 65% of carbon abatement will come from SAF, however, production levels remain challenging. IATA called for government incentives for production.

“SAF is being produced. And every single drop is being used. The problem is that the quantities are small. The solution is government policy incentives. Through incentivizing production, we could see 30 billion liters of SAF available by 2030. That will still be far from where we need to be. But it would be a clear tipping point towards our net zero ambition of ample SAF quantities at affordable prices,” said Sullivan.

IATA outlined three other areas where it was working to support the energy transition of the industry:

SpinLaunch appoints Dómhnal Slattery asStrategic Advisor

Slattery brings over three decades of expertise and is an investor in the business

SpinLaunch, a pioneering space company enabling rapid, cost-effective space access, has announced that Dómhnal Slattery, a recognized global aerospace leader and proven founder, has joined the SpinLaunch team as a strategic advisor to the company. Slattery joins the Advisory Board and recently participated in the company’s Series B investment round.

The announcement was made by SpinLaunch Founder & CEO, Jonathan Yaney, who said that Slattery’s three decades of financial and business leadership will help SpinLaunch advance its commitment to commercializing end-to-end space solutions across launch, satellites, and services.

“Dómhnal Slattery's passion and dedication to innovation, strategic growth, and sustainability makes him a natural fit for SpinLaunch,” stated Yaney. “With his proven business leadership, track record as a founder and commitment to purpose-driven initiatives, Dómhnal will accelerate our global commercialization efforts and strengthen our leadership position as the trusted provider of innovative space solutions.”

SpinLaunch, founded by Yaney in 2014, is revolutionizing access to space by building a ground-based, electric-powered mass accelerator launch system that can deliver a substantially less expensive and environmentally sustainable way to place constellations of small satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). In the last year, SpinLaunch has also created a new product line of small satellite buses in the 20kg-200 kg size class that complements our low-cost and high-cadence approach to space, and meets upcoming LEO constellation needs.

Agreement on ReFuel EU is a step forward in letting SAF flow in Europe

Agreement on ReFuel EU is a step forward in letting SAF flow in Europe

EU policymakers should now turn their attention to ensuring Europe develops a strong SAF industry that can provide enough sustainable fuel for airlines to fulfil the mandates agreed during the ReFuel EU negotiations concluded last night.

Widespread adoption of SAF is a critical component of European aviation’s roadmap for achieving net zero and EU policymakers need to throw their efforts behind building up Europe’s SAF industry in the same way they are supporting other sustainable technologies.

With the first mandate of 2% SAF uptake due by 2025, the agreement provides immediate certainty for airlines and the whole SAF industry.

The single EU-wide mandate for SAF will prevent fragmentation of the EU’s single market for aviation through differing national targets in different member states. The EU mandate should now supplant national mandates and harmonise all relevant legislation.

Strict reporting rules for fuel suppliers with transparency requirements with regards to the sustainability of the fuel provided will be critical to guarantee the legitimacy of the mandate in the eyes of the passengers.
