Architectural design award for Helsinki Airport

The lower ceiling of the expanded Terminal 2 at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is a proud achievement for Finnish wood design and construction and has received the International Award for Wood Architecture 2022. To keep this award-winning design looking its best for many years, both the inside and the outside wooden ceilings are coated in Teknos AQUATOP 2600-90 translucent topcoat in a matt finish.

In describing the winning entrant the award judges praised the design for its ambition and craftsmanship commenting “visually, the ceiling has a unified feel due to the uncompromising finishing and uniform surface treatment” (Wood Award, Puuinfo). They also acknowledged the calming effect of wood and its use as a building material in the hectic environment of an airport.

A challenging construction in wood

Manufactured by Raision PuusepƤt Oy, a total of 7700 m² of wood was used in the roof of the departure hall, the outside box and around the skylight of the terminal. The wavy shape of the roof is made of thousands of curved wooden elements and was one of the most challenging assignments for Raisio Puusepi.

Neste delivers more than 500,000 gallons of sustainable aviation fuel to Los Angeles International Airport

Neste has delivered over 500,000 gallons (1,500 metric tons) of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in cooperation with LAXFUEL
This first large-volume delivery of SAF to LAX enables commercial airlines flying from the airport to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air travel
Using Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%* over the fuel's life cycle compared to using fossil jet fuel

Neste delivered over 500,000 gallons (1,500 metric tonnes) of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This SAF delivery was made possible by a close cooperation with LAXFUEL, the consortium of the airlines operating at LAX providing the jet fuel supply infrastructure for the planes at the airport. It is the first time SAF is delivered into LAXFUEL's supply infrastructure using barges for transport.

The fuel delivery significantly increases the availability and accessibility of sustainable aviation fuel at one of the busiest international airports and aviation hubs in the US, offering airlines and passengers a solution to travel more sustainably with reduced greenhouse gas emissions from air travel.

Sustainable aviation fuel has been widely acknowledged as a key element in helping to achieve aviation's emissions reduction goals globally. One of the challenges facing the aviation industry is making SAF available in large enough volumes. Smaller deliveries of SAF have been used for flights out of LAX in the past, but those have been in smaller and infrequent quantities brought in by trucks. This partnership marks the first time that SAF is being delivered as a ready made fuel blend into the existing fueling infrastructure in large volumes at LAX.

Eurowings is significantly expanding its presence at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and extending its range of attractive direct destinations. With the start of the summer flight schedule from the end of March 2023, travellers will be able to choose from almost 30 destinations with Eurowings from the capital's airport – twice as many as before.

The new destinations that have already been determined include Malaga, Alicante, Antalya, Larnaca and Rhodes. Further destinations from Berlin residents' favourite vacation spots are currently being planned. In addition to the expansion towards the outh, Eurowings is strengthening its services to Northern Europe in particular: The Lufthansa subsidiary will connect the German capital with Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Helsinki from March 2023. As part of this growth, Eurowings is increasing its base in the capital and will have six aircraft stationed at BER in the future. A fourth aircraft is already reinforcing Eurowings' growth path at the capital's airport in the current 2022/23 winter flight schedule.

With this significant expansion of its program, the Lufthansa Group airline is also responding to the withdrawal of international competitors, who have pulled out of the German market in the wake of the pandemic. Months ago, Eurowings had already emphasized the importance of the capital, announcing its intention to strengthen its position in Berlin.

“Others are pulling back, we are building up,” Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof said at a joint press briefing with BER Airport. “Berlin is and remains an absolute tourist magnet and one of the most exciting metropolises in Europe, both culturally and historically. So it's only logical for us as a German airline to expand our presence and bring more Eurowings to the capital.”

Aletta von Massenbach, Chairwoman of the Management Board at BER: “The doubling of the aircraft fleet and connections at the capital's airport by Eurowings is a strong signal. Globally, the capital region is one of the most popular travel destinations and attracts people from all over the world. Berlin and Brandenburg as an economic region are experiencing dynamic development and offer airlines the best conditions for consistent growth. The expansion of Eurowings' services at BER further strengthens the partnership and enhances the connectivity of the airport location. We thank Eurowings and the Lufthansa Group for expanding their commitment and for their confidence in BER and the capital region.” As Germany's largest vacation airline with more than 4,000 employees, Eurowings has the most popular vacation destinations in Mallorca, the Canary Islands, Greece, Croatia and Egypt in its program.

Air Serbia starts flights to Malaga next month

A new destination for Air Serbia  Photo Air Serbia
The Serbian national airline is commencing a direct service between Belgrade and Malaga. It will be the fifth destination in Spain that Air Serbia will fly to this year. Flights will be operated twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. Tickets are already available at the starting price of 99 euros one way in Economy. After the renewal of the Malta flights, Malaga will be the second destination Air Serbia will introduce for this winter season.

"By introducing Malaga as a new destination, Air Serbia is further enhancing its presence in Spain and offering passengers even better connections to this Mediterranean country. Flights to all cities in Spain operated by our company have recorded very good cabin load factors throughout the year. We believe that Malaga will be as attractive to our passengers as Barcelona, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, and Valencia," said BoÅ”ko Rupić, General Manager, Commercial and Strategy, Air Serbia.

The city of Malaga was founded in the 8th century, at the southernmost end of Spain, in the Andalusia province. It is located on the Coast of the Sun (Costa del Sol) and it has approximately 300 sunny days a year. It is known for numerous historical and cultural landmarks, such as the La Alcazaba, Gibralfaro Castle, Picasso Museum, and MƔlaga's Centre of Contemporary Art. This city, the sixth biggest in Spain, is the birthplace of the famous painter Pablo Picasso.

Flights to Malaga will be operated from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The flight schedule for this route was designed to offer passengers favourable connections to numerous cities in Air Serbia’s network, such as Athens, Vienna, Bucharest, Ljubljana, Istanbul, Podgorica, Skopje, Zagreb, and others.

Air Serbia to launch flights to Chicago

Air Serbia has confirmed it will launch direct flights between Belgrade and Chicago (O'Hare International Airport - ORD) starting on 17 May 2023, thus continuing to expand its operations in the United States market.

After a pause of more than 30 years, the Serbian national airline is again starting a service to the famous Windy City. Until 11 June, flights will be operated twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while as of 12 June, Belgrade-Chicago flights will be operated three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Flights will last approximately 11 hours and will be operated by Airbus A330 aircraft from Air Serbia’s long-haul fleet. Tickets are already available for purchase at the starting price of 640 euros for a round trip, with all taxes included.

“After more than three decades, the JU 506/507 flight will mark the return of the national airline to Chicago. This is an extremely important city and we are certain that direct flights between Belgrade and Chicago will mean a lot not just to the Serbian diaspora, but also to the wider Balkans region. By introducing flights between those two cities, the region will be better connected to Chicago, and passengers will have more choices. With the good connections that Air Serbia offers we expect great interest for these direct flights, for those who want to continue their travel to other destinations,” said George Petković, Vice President Americas, Air Serbia.

By re-opening the route, Air Serbia will, via Belgrade, provide good connections between Chicago and other cities in its network, such as Athens, Vienna, Berlin, Bologna, Bucharest, Dubrovnik, Istanbul, Larnaca, Ljubljana, Prague, Pula, Podgorica, Rome, Sarajevo, Skopje, Sofia, Tivat, Venice, Zagreb, and many others. On the other hand, thanks to its interline partnership with JetBlue and American Airlines, Air Serbia will be able to offer better connections to passengers who will continue their travels toward other locations in North America from Chicago and New York.

With almost 2.8 million citizens, Chicago is the most populous city in the state of Illinois and the third biggest city in the U.S., after New York and Los Angeles. It is located on Lake Michigan, and is a part of both the Midwest and the Great Lakes areas. The city itself is considered an important hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, education, technology, communication and transportation. Chicago is famous for its unique artistic sculptures and installations.

Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is one of the six highest-traffic airports in the world, and in 2019, its services were used by over 90 million passengers, who had access to 236 destinations.

Air Serbia is the national airline of the Republic of Serbia, the successor of the first national airline, Aeroput, established in Belgrade in 1927. We have been operating under our present name since October 2013.

Air Serbia operates scheduled, seasonal and charter flights to over 70 destinations in Europe, the Mediterranean, North America, Asia and Africa, in passenger and cargo traffic. In cooperation with our airline partners, we also offer flights to international destinations in Asia, Australia, North America and Africa.

In addition to Nikola Tesla Airport in Belgrade, which is our base, Air Serbia also flies from Constantine the Great Airport in NiÅ” and from International Airport Morava near Kraljevo.

Airbus and ArianeGroup have signed a contract for the next transition batch of Ariane 6 large carbon fibre structures. The contract includes the manufacturing and supply of innovative, large, lightweight structures for the next fourteen Ariane 6 launchers, to be manufactured until 2025. The contract will support ArianeGroup's ramp up to full production rate by then.

Airbus builds up to four carbon fibre structures for each Ariane launcher at its Getafe site, near Madrid. The new state-of-the-art 4.0 industrial facility includes a dedicated manufacturing and assembly line for the Ariane 6 launcher structures. The latest technology innovations have resulted in a reduced mass while delivering a stronger structure in a single piece at a lower cost. The Interface Structure (upper and lower) is the largest space carbon fibre structure ever produced in Europe. The other structures include the Launch Vehicle Adapter, for the upper stage; and the Equipped Solid Rocket upper part of each rocket booster.

“Signing this contract is a significant step forward, not only for Airbus and its launcher activities in Spain, but for the overall Ariane 6 programme,” said Luis Guerra, head of Space Systems in Airbus in Spain. “It demonstrates that Spanish participation is key to the future of Ariane 6 and what is next in space for Europe.”

“Following the signature of the exploitation contracts with Sabca, Europropulsion, Avio and MTAerospace, this contract with Airbus is a new and key step towards a strong Ariane 6 European team” said Stephane Nogatchewsky, Head of Procurement of ArianeGroup. “While the inaugural flight of Ariane 6 is getting closer and the industrial ramp up is intensifying, this collaboration is a positive and critical milestone for the future of Ariane 6 operations. Also, unifying European actors is paramount to ensure further Ariane 6 industrial robustness, competitiveness and preserve European autonomous access to space.”

The Ariane 6 programme is the only European asset that allows independent access to space for strategic missions, and the flexibility to launch both heavy and light payloads to a wide range of orbits for applications such as Earth observation, telecommunication, meteorology, science and navigation.

UK's Spaceport launch coming soon.....

Establishing orbital launch capabilities in the UK is bringing investment and jobs into Cornwall and other communities across the UK.

The UK’s first orbital space launch moved one step closer to take-off as Spaceport Cornwall received the UK’s first-ever spaceport licence and the first launch coming soon.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority issued the licence, following consent from Transport Secretary Mark Harper, meaning he is in agreement with the licensing decisions made by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority issued the licence, following consent from Transport Secretary Mark Harper, meaning he is in agreement with the licensing decisions made by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

Spaceport Cornwall, based at Cornwall Airport Newquay, has demonstrated to the regulator it has met the appropriate safety, security, environment and other aspects to operate a UK spaceport. The approval also means Spaceport Cornwall has the infrastructure, equipment and services for horizontal space launches.

Spaceport Cornwall has demonstrated it meets the statutory requirements on safety, security, environment and other aspects to operate a UK spaceport
Nearly 150 satellite licences issued by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, supporting the growing space sector which is creating thousands of jobs

The licence enables Virgin Orbit to begin ‘wet dress’ rehearsals ahead of a proposed launch, which would be the first of its kind on European soil.

This latest licence adds to nearly 150 satellite licences already approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority since becoming the UK’s space regulator in July 2021.

The growing space industry will boost innovation and is estimated to be worth £16.5 billion and support 47,000 jobs, with 2,500 apprentices opening the sector up to even more people.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: "The cosmic cornerstone is being laid for the UK’s first orbital space launch, with the UK Civil Aviation Authority granting Spaceport Cornwall the first-ever spaceport licence.

Virgin Orbit’s planned launch reinforces our position as a leading space nation as we look to the future of spaceflight, which can spur growth and innovation across the sector, as well as creating thousands of jobs and apprenticeships."

Richard Moriarty, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said:  "This is an historic moment as we licence the first-ever spaceport in the UK. We’re proud to be playing our part in facilitating the UK’s space ambitions through assessing the safety, security and other requirements of these activities. This is another major milestone to enable this country to become a leading launch nation.

When we became the space regulator, we committed to delivering in an open, effective and proportionate way, with public safety at its heart. Our work does not stop with this licence decision as we continue to assess other licence applications and oversee the effectiveness of licenced activities, all enabling the UK’s space sector to grow safely and securely."

Melissa Thorpe, Head of Spaceport Cornwall, said:  "To be the first Spaceport in the UK with a licence to operate is a historic moment. The regulatory environment created by the Civil Aviation Authority ensures that UK launch will set the global bar in terms of responsibility and transparency.

Cornwall is now ready to open up the use of Space for Good, and support the UK industry in harnessing the power of space to benefit life on Earth."

The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s licence for Spaceport Cornwall follows months of working closely with government and other organisations including the Marine Management Organisation, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Health and Safety Executive.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority continues to work on several licence applications, including being in very advanced stages with Virgin Orbit on its applications for launch and range licences, as well as the satellite operators, ahead of a proposed first UK launch.

The regulator is also progressing applications from a range of other spaceports and operators, and recently started a consultation on the environmental effects of a proposed SaxaVord launch in Scotland.

Dan Hart, Virgin Orbit CEO, said:  "Obtaining this license marks a point of distinction for Spaceport Cornwall, and is a key preparatory milestone for this first orbital launch from the UK.

We appreciate the efforts of the British regulatory agencies with the support of the US Federal Aviation Administration in this first-time licensing process, as we strive in our respective roles to ensure a safe and successful mission in the coming weeks."

Ian Annett, Deputy CEO at the UK Space Agency, said:  "The first-ever spaceport licence granted by the UK Civil Aviation Authority is another major milestone as we look forward to the first satellite launch from UK soil this year. Getting to this stage is a testament to the hard work from partners across government and industry to make our launch ambitions a reality and we are now tantalisingly close.

Establishing orbital launch capabilities in the UK is already bringing investment and jobs into Cornwall and other communities across the UK and inspiring a new generation to join our growing space sector."

Councillor Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council portfolio holder for economy, said:  "What a fantastic milestone. We are now one step closer to becoming the UK’s first operational Spaceport and I speak for all of us at Cornwall Council as we await with great excitement the next steps, looking towards Launch UK with our partners the UK Space Agency and Virgin Orbit."

Three data package options are available for this purpose, which can be added starting at seven euros. The options available are Chat Unlimited, Basic (two hours) and Premium (four hours), so that each guest can purchase the right package for their individual use. To use the service, guests simply need to connect to the FlyConnect WiFi in flight mode on board and visit www.condorflyconnect.com. Guests have the option of testing the chat function free of charge for the first ten minutes, allowing them to use messenger services, for example, before opting for one of the data packages. In the future, guests will also find all the information they need to use the service in the in-flight menus and in the in-flight entertainment of the entire A330neo long-haul fleet and on condor.com.
