Maersk Air Cargo takes delivery of its first of two new Boeing 777F freighters

On Friday 12 July, Maersk Air Cargo, a division of the massive A.P. Moller – Maersk logistics group took delivery of the first of two new Boeing 777F freighter jets. The newly arrived aircraft is the first Boeing 777 owned by a Danish airline.

The company said that especially Maersk’s air freight customers in China and Europe will benefit from increased capacity and efficiency by the introduction of the two Boeing 777F. Both will be deployed on Maersk’s existing Europe-China route with initially three weekly flights, and later up to six weekly flights. Besides more capacity on direct routes the 777Fs will ensure shorter transit times as well as faster handling times and quality at origin and destination.

Maersk ordered the two 777Fs in November 2021 as part of the modernization of its fleet. The delivery of the second aircraft is scheduled for later in Q3. Maersk Air Cargo’s owned controlled fleet will then comprise of two Boeing 777F and 20 Boeing 767F.

Lars Jordahn, Head of Maersk Air Cargo said "We are delighted to take this important delivery and upgrade our fleet with two of the largest and most reliable freighters available on the market. With this step we are entering the premier league of cargo aviation. The B777F can transport more than double of payload on each flight compared to our 767Fs, and it is the most fuel-efficient aircraft in the world with the GE90 engines."

The Boeing 777F can fly up to 9,200 kilometres (4,970 nautical miles) and carry a maximum payload of 102,000 kilograms. The main deck fits pallets up to 3 metres high, and all cargo decks are temperature-controlled. The Onboard Network System allows connected cargo in the future. Maersk chose GE90 engines for its 777F which are the world's most powerful and reliable commercial jet engines.

Narin Phol, Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer (CPO) for Logistics and Services at Maersk commented:  "From a commercial perspective the two Boeing 777Fs are a giant leap in terms of what we can offer our air freight customers going forward. Besides enabling a much more efficient route structuring our 777Fs will improve the availability of space for our customers as we see a growing demand for integrated supply chain solutions which include air. Due to the disruptive environment in logistics, a rising number of cargo owners are choosing to reduce the number of service providers in their supply chain. Increased visibility across fewer providers enables the cargo owners to react more swiftly and much better informed in case of disruption. Availability of air freight capacity and full asset control are important aspects here. Both increase the levels of resilience, visibility and flexibility which are essential in these disruptive times."

The two new 777 Freighters, which were booked earlier this quarter, are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2024. Silk Way West Airlines orders two 777-8 freighters

Photo Boeing

Boeing and Silk Way West Airlines have finalized an order of two 777-8 Freighters, with options for two additional aeroplanes. The two companies announced the agreement at a signing ceremony today at Boeing Commercial Airplanes' Seattle Delivery Center.

The Azerbaijani cargo carrier, which serves 40 destinations around the world, is the first customer in the Eurasia region to order the industry's newest, most capable and most fuel-efficient twin-engine freighter.  The order was previously listed as unidentified on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website.

"We are pleased to announce this order with our longstanding partner Boeing and become one of the world's first customers for the newest freighter," said Zaur Akhundov, Silk Way Group president. "This year Silk Way West Airlines celebrates its 10th anniversary, and over the past decade the carrier has been operating an all-Boeing fleet. Today's agreement reflects our ongoing investment in Boeing's market-leading freighters. Our fleet renewal plans will help to further reduce our operating costs and enhance fuel efficiency as well as make air freight services in our region more sustainable."

Boeing launched the new 777-8 Freighter in January 2022 and has booked more than 50 orders for the model. The 777-8 Freighter has nearly identical payload and range capabilities as the 747-400 Freighter while providing 30% better fuel efficiency and emissions and 25% better operating costs per tonne. It is the ideal choice as operators replace aging freighters later this decade.

"With sustained demand for air cargo tied to expanding e-commerce and air freight's speed and reliability, Boeing expects the global freighter fleet to increase by 60% through 2041," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are proud that Boeing products, including this order for the 777-8 Freighter, continue to drive Silk Way West Airlines' expansion plans and help realize the ambition of making Baku a global cargo hub."

Boeing provides more than 90% of the worldwide dedicated freighter capacity, including new production and converted aircraft.

Emirates Expands its Cargo Fleet With Five Boeing 777 Freighters

Photo Boeing
Boeing and Emirates announced the Middle East carrier is further expanding its all-Boeing dedicated freighter fleet with an order for five 777 Freighters, valued at more than $1.7 billion at list prices.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, said: "Emirates is investing in new freighters so that we can continue to serve customer demand with the latest fuel-efficient aircraft. This order reflects Emirates' confidence in air freight demand and overall aviation sector growth. It lays the ground for our continued growth, which is driven by the reach of our diverse global network, the advanced handling infrastructure at our Dubai hub, and the tailored transport solutions that Emirates has developed to serve our varied customers' needs."

The aeroplanes will be operated by Emirates SkyCargo, adding to its fleet of 11 777 Freighters. At last November's Dubai Airshow, Emirates announced a $1 billion investment to expand its air cargo capacity, including two new 777 Freighters that joined Emirates' fleet this year.

Emirates was a launch customer for the 777 Freighter and is currently the world's largest operator of the 777 family, with nearly 150 of the aeroplane type in its fleet. Boeing's best-selling freighter, the 777F is the world's largest, longest-range and most capable twin-engine freighter flying today, with 17% lower fuel use and CO2 emissions compared to prior aeroplanes.

"We value the trust that Emirates has repeatedly placed in its all-Boeing freighter fleet," said Stan Deal, president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The expansion of Emirates' fleet with these additional fuel-efficient 777 Freighters will enable the airline to support its growing cargo market demand, transporting goods rapidly and efficiently from origin to destination in the Middle East and around the world."

Cargolux woos Boeing with possible order for 777F aircraft

The future of Cargolux fleet?
The boss of European cargo airline Cargolux was actively wooing planemaker Boeing with a possible order for 777-8 Cargo jets, by issuing a statement saying      "With the 777-8 Freighter being the preferred solution to replace our 747-400s, Cargolux is looking forward to continuing its ongoing relationship with Boeing,"

Boeing had hoped another order could be chalked up at the Farnborough International Airshow, however, the discount on offer was not enough to tempt Cargolux from signing on the dotted line.

It would have been a major shift had Cargolux been in a position to switch allegiance away from the US planemaker as it has been a long-term operator of jets from the manufacturer and is currently the largest operator of Boeing widebody freighters in Europe.  The firm has a total fleet of 30 747-400 and 747-8 Freighters.

Cargolux’s high-quality scheduled and charter air freight services across the globe use an all-747 freighter fleet and a solid network of trucking contractors to move valuable and time-sensitive commodities on its network, covering more than 90 destinations. The Boeing 747 was designed as a freighter from the get-go. Flexibility in loading and operational efficiency are its key components. With a large side-cargo door and a unique nose door, Cargolux’s freighters can be loaded quickly and easily and accommodate heavy, outsized loads as well as temperature-sensitive freight that requires special care and sensitive treatment.
