Republic’s first apprenticeship class of 2022 graduated at the end of February with 13 students certified by the Federal Aviation Administration as aircraft dispatchers. As a key feature of the program, apprentices who receive FAA certification have the opportunity to work as aircraft dispatchers in Republic’s System Operations Control (SOC) centre where they help ensure the safe operation of hundreds of flights each day across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
Republic’s apprenticeship program runs six to eight weeks and covers all of the technical skills required for the position of aircraft dispatcher. Program participants are paid throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.
The airline currently employs more than 6,000 staff and operates daily flights to 100 cities in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean and Central America. The airline provides fixed-fee flights operated under its codeshare partners’ brands: American Eagle, Delta Connection and United Express.
Aircraft dispatchers work at the heartbeat of every U.S. airline, planning routes of flight, filing flight plans with the FAA and communicating critical safety information to flight crews at all stages of flight to maintain safety. Dispatchers respond to unexpected events and ensure the airline’s operations comply with all applicable regulations and air traffic control requirements. All commercial airlines in the United States are required to provide aircraft dispatch functions performed by licensed dispatchers.
Applicants for the aircraft dispatcher apprenticeship program must be high school graduates or have a GED, able to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task and appropriately prioritize tasks, possess strong mathematics skills, be problem solvers and have a customer service orientation. Aircraft dispatchers are required by the FAA to be age 23 or older, but the apprenticeship program is open to those age 22 and older.
