The Helsinki based national flag carrier of Finland, Finnair has announced that it is starting consultations with staff for 90-day furloughs as a direct result in Russian airspace closure.
Just a day or so after the airline assured staff, partners and the media it had enough money in its reserves to cope with the no-fly zone instigated by Russian authorities it made the shock announcement. The airline says the negotiations concern all 2800 pilots and cabin up to 90 days. It estimates that between 90 and 200 pilots would need to be furloughed each month, whereas between 150 to 450 cabin crew would be laid off. The furloughs would start from the beginning of next month, but this was subject to change and alteration.
Finnair currently flies to Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Delhi and as of March 9 to Tokyo, avoiding Russian airspace, and is currently evaluating possibilities to operate a part of its flights to Korea, and China with an alternative routing.
”With Russian airspace closed, there will be fewer flights by Finnair, and unfortunately less work available for our employees”, says Jaakko Schildt, Chief Operations Officer, Finnair. ”A large share of our staff has been on long furloughs during the pandemic, so the need for further furloughs feels especially harsh, and we are sorry for this.”
