There can be no doubt the coronavirus crisis has a major impact on European aviation and as such many European air carriers are witnessing changes in demand and supply faster than before. By opening a new route such as Southampton, the loss of demand on other routes in Europe will be absorbed. In addition, KLM is strengthening its position in the United Kingdom.
KLM is in the process of slowly and carefully rebuilding the network. The number of destinations is growing rapidly, but the number of flights is still far from the old level. KLM has opted to first offer customers as much choice of destinations as possible. Opening Southampton fits in this strategy.
Flight schedule Southampton
From 31 August 2020, KLM will operate daily flights between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Southampton. The Embraer 175 has 20 seats in Business Class, 8 in Economy Comfort and 60 in Economy Class.
The flight schedule is as follows:
- KL0919 departs from Amsterdam daily at 16.35 and arrives in Southampton at 16.45.
- KL 0920 departs from Southampton daily at 17.20 and arrives in Amsterdam at 19.35.

Welcoming the new route, Derek Provan, CEO of AGS Airports which owns Southampton Airport, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome KLM back to Southampton, to restore the hugely popular service to Amsterdam. We know from passenger feedback that this route is very much in demand.
“This is a really important step in restoring connectivity to Europe, although we know that it will take a very long time to build SOU back up to where it was following the loss of Flybe and the Covid pandemic.”
Southampton is the third largest port in the United Kingdom and the largest cruise port in Northern Europe, with 2 million cruise passengers a year. The city has some of the best preserved medieval city walls in England. A visit to the historic docks is also highly recommended. And the ultra-modern SeaCity Museum tells the story of the Titanic, which left Southampton on 10 April 1912.
West Quay Shopping Centre
West Quay Shopping Centre is located in the heart of Southampton City Centre and offers a fantastic range of over 100 shops. There is also a growing range of eateries including Nandos, Pizza Express, Wagamama and many other places to grab a quick bite to eat
Mayflower Theatre
The Mayflower Theatre is the largest theatre in Southern England and offers a wide range of shows from musicals, dance and opera to comedy and dramas. The Theatre plays host to many touring productions and famous musicals transported from the West End such as War Horse, CATS and Hairspray as well as the annual Christmas Pantomime.
Southampton Guildhall
Southampton Guildhall is the South’s largest multipurpose entertainment venue. It is situated in the centre of the city with a large selection of restaurants and shops surrounding it. The Guildhall has played host to some of music’s biggest names, comedians and other special events.
Historic Old Town
Southampton’s enchanting medieval Old Town has lots of unique historical features. The Bargate is the historic entrance to the town and through this you can look at many ancient monuments and buildings including the third longest stretch of unbroken medieval defensive walling in England
