The airport popular with low-cost carriers said it closed as a precaution after smoke was seen coming from a basement area. A spokesperson for Aeroporti di Roma said "a fire crew put out “the beginnings of a fire,” adding that the arrivals hall was now operating normally.
The airport also said that neither the passengers nor the airport infrastructure had been affected by the fire, the cause of which was still under investigation.
The airport is located around 7.5 miles southeast of the centre of Rome and was closed for approximately 90 minutes. During that time, two departing flights were cancelled and a further six were delayed. Arrivals were diverted to Romes main scheduled airport Fiumicino during the closure.
